Exploring the Issue of Failure to Fail in a Nursing Program

AbstractA study using a qualitative descriptive design was undertaken to explore the issue of “failure to fail” in a nursing program. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with nursing university faculty members, preceptors, and faculty advisors (n=13). Content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results indicate that: (a) failing a student is a difficult process; (b) both academic and emotional support are required for students and preceptors and faculty advisors; (c) there are consequences for programs, faculty, and students when a student has failed a placement; (d) at times, personal, professional, and structural reasons exist for failing to fail a student; and (e) the reputation of the professional program can be diminished as a result of failing to fail a student. Recommendations for improving assessment, evaluation, and intervention with a failing student include documentation, communication, and support. These findings have implications for improving the quality of clinical experiences.

There is a universal demand for well-prepared professionals in all disciplines, and society has entrusted professional schools with the task of preparing such individuals (Ralph, Walker, and Wimmer, 2008). Within this context, field or clinical instructors and university faculty have an academic and professional responsibility to teach, supervise, and evaluate students’ field or clinical experience to ensure that each graduate of their program is competent. However, there is evidence that some instructors and university faculty experience difficulty in identifying and making decisions to fail students who display incompetent or unsatisfactory practice (Bogo, Regehr, Power, and Regehr, 2007; Brown, Neudorf, Poitras, and Rodgers, 2007; Hawe, 2003). A qualitative descriptive design was used to explore the issue of “failure to fail” in professional programs including Nursing, Education, and Social Work. Results indicate that: (a) failing a student is a difficult process; (b) both academic and emotional support are required for students and field instructors/preceptors/ faculty advisors; (c) there are consequences for programs, faculty, and students when a student has failed a placement; (d) at times, personal, professional, and structural reasons exist for failing to fail a student; and (e) the reputation of the professional program can be diminished as a result of failing to fail a student. Recommendations for improving the quality of field or clinical experiences and support for students and field instructors/preceptors and will thus improve the quality of our programs and graduates are presented.

BACKGROUND: Doctor-patient relationship [DPR] refers to verbal and non-verbal communication between doctor and patient, which is of great importance in consultation sessions. AIM: Therefore, the present study attempts to explore the importance and value of DPR in Iran. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The method used in the study was conventional content analysis. The data were collected from 21 faculty members (FMs) of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Shiraz, Iran, who participated in three focus group discussions (FGDs). Transcribed data were analysed using Conventional Content Analysis (CCA) which identified condensed meaning units, subthemes, and themes. RESULTS: Four themes were extracted from 198 meaning units, 87 condensed meaning units, and 17 subthemes. These included gateway [the role of DPR]; nonlinearity [the nature of DPR]; distortion (quality of DPR in the context); and dysfunctional system (weakness in health system). Generally, results showed DPR to be the gateway to consultations based on non-verbal communication and doctor empathy. The study showed distorted DPR which was due to the dysfunctionality of the health care system. CONCLUSION: As indicated DPR plays an important role in medical contexts, but if distorted it leads to an unsuccessful outcome. Therefore, to promote DPR, it is necessary to reinforce its structure. Thus, the infrastructure has to be modified and developed at all levels.

This article studies the use of field research as an anthropological tool in literary reportage which is a comprehensive element of the creation of journalistic content. Based on the examples of journalistic texts of the 20s by the Austrian writer Joseph Roth, we have analyzed the anthropological methods which were used by this author in his reportages, that is the main objective of this study. Using diachronic comparison, qualitative method and content analysis to evaluate and to explain the concept of Joseph Roth’s texts, as well as the methodology of textual, syntagmatic (by Volodymyr Propp) and paradigmatic analysis (by Claude Levi-Strauss), we have examined the generated meanings in the texts of the mentioned author. As a result of the study, we have identified four methods that Joseph Roth used writing his news reportages in the 1920s, including “In Midday France” and “White Cities”. Those methods are as follows: overt observation, in-depth interviews, fixing details and gaining empirical experience. The modern authors call these methods as classic ones, without which it is impossible to work in this genre. As we have seen from the examples of literary reportages of the French cycle by Joseph Roth, the anthropological tools used by this author for his works contributed to deepening and improving the quality of his texts which is of great significance for our study. Joseph Roth created a panoramic picture of the twentieth century in his texts through watching, communicating and studing. However, it is worth to add that he was often too subjective, suffering harsh criticism for this.

The aimed of this study was to analyze the management of Boonpring Ecotourism by Village Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in order to increase income of the village (PADes). This study uses a case study design with a qualitative descriptive method. Qualitative data obtained by conducting in depth interviews, observations and documentation. The informants in this study were the Head of village, the Head of BUMDes, staff and community. Data reduction, data presentation, trianggulation and conclusion are data analysis  used in this study. The results of the study stated that the management of Boonpring Ecotourism had been carried out well by the Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) of Sanan Kerto in accordance with the cooperative, participatory, transparent, accountable, and sustainable principles. Good management of Boonpring Ecotourism is expected to increase Income of village in a sustainable manner by exploring the potential of villages through the tourism sector even though there are obstacles in the application of participatory principles, namely the quality of Human Resources (HR) that need to be trained.Keywords: Management Principles; tourismp; BUMDes; Income of Village. AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengelolaan Ekowisata Boonpring oleh Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDes) dalam rangka meningkatkan pendapatan desa (PADes). Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi kasus dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data kualitatif diperoleh dengan melakukan wawancara secara mendalam, observasi dan dokumentasi. Informan dalam penelitian ini adalah Kepala Desa, kepala BUMDes, karyawan, dan masyarakat. Reduksi data, penyajian data, trianggulasi dan penarikan kesimpulan merupakan analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menyatakan pengelolaan Ekowisata Boonpring sudah dilakukan dengan baik oleh Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDes) Sanan kerto sesuai dengan prinsip kooperatif, partisipatif, emansipatif, transparan, akuntable, dan sustainable. Pengelolaan Ekowisata Boonpring yang baik diharapkan dapat meningkatkan Pendapatan Asli Desa secara berkelanjutan dengan menggali potensi desa melalui sektor pariwisata walaupun ada kendala dalam penerapan prinsip partisipatif yaitu kualitas Sumber Daya Manusia (SDM) yang perlu dilatih.Kata Kunci: Prinsip Pengelolaan, wisata, BUMDes, PADes.

Background: Every single person including people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) have five basic needs; one of which is a physiological sexual need. Unfortunately, PLWHA face many difficulties in fulfilling their sexual needs due to the stigma and fear of infecting their partner.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of PLWHA and partner’s responses toward the fulfillment of sexual needs.Methods: This study was a qualitative descriptive phenomenological research, which collected data through in-depth interviews from fourteen PLWHA in Paramacitta Spirit Foundation, Denpasar. The participants were recruited through snowball sampling, informed and gave consent for their voluntary participation. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method.Results: The study revealed five themes describing the sexual experiences of PLWHA, including: (1) the fulfillment of sexual need of PLWHA, (2) the roles of partner for PLWHA, (3) various perceived stimuli which could increase the sexual desire, (4) the perceived factors which could incapacitate the ability and quality of sexual desire, and (5) the efforts to increase sexual capability and quality.  Conclusion: Sex was an important need for PLWHA to meet. Despite having a virus, after undergoing anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment, PLWHA felt healthier, and thus they could meet their sexual need like a normal person in general.

Abstract Background Progressive neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, significantly interfere with patients' lives, and those of their families. The aim of the research was to establish whether the extent of the information on patients' health conditions, and the way patients learn this information from doctors affect their adaptation to chronic and progressive diseases.Methods Qualitative methodology was used for a total of 52 participants (patients with progressive neurological diseases, their family members, and health and social workers). Data were collected using individual, in-depth interviews and focus groups. Analysis of data for interpretation, conceptualization, and re-integration was performed by open, axial, and selective coding.Results It was determined that adequate information about patients’ health status, and the use of coping strategies are related to their adaptation to their disease, and consequently, to their quality of life. The participants often considered the extent of the information provided, and the way they were informed to be inadequate. Receiving the diagnosis, the progression of the disease, and the end of life were found to be the most burdensome.Conclusion Our results show that Czech neurologist should develop better communication skills, particularly for informing patients with progressive neurological diseases. Open communication, emotional support, and support in selecting effective coping strategies can help patients adapt more readily to their disease, and improve their quality of life.

ABSTRACT This research to determine the knowledge and attitudes of health workers regarding reporting and reporting systems of medication errors has been carried out. Medication errors is any event that can cause or resulted  in improper health services or harm to patients that actually can be avoided. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using in-depth interviews with data analysis conducted using thematic analysis. The results showed that the health workers at Monompia General Hospital GMIBM Kotamobagu did not understand the reporting of medication errors, decision making to report medication errors was determined by the severity of the result of errors and lack of reporting due to fear of disciplinary action and fear of losing their jobs. Monompia General Hospital GMIBM Kotamobagu City continues to strive to improve the quality of health services, but the limitations of facilities and infrastructure as well as human resources were the obsracles. Keywords : Knowledge, Medication Errors, Reporting System ABSTRAK Telah dilakukan penelitian untuk mengetahui pengetahuan dan sikap tenaga kesehatan mengenai pelaporan dan sistem pelaporan medication error. Medication error merupakan setiap kejadian yang dapat menyebabkan atau berakibat pada  pelayanan kesehatan yang tidak tepat atau membahayakan pasien yang sebenarnya dapat dihindari. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian yang bersifat deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan wawancara mendalam dengan analisis data yang dilakukan menggunakan tematik analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa tenaga kesehatan  di RSU Monompia GMIBM Kota Kotamobagu belum memahami mengenai pelaporan medication error, pengambilan keputusan untuk melaporkan kesalahan pengobatan ditentukan oleh tingkat keparahan hasil dari kesalahan dan minimnya tingkat pelaporan disebabkan karena tenaga kesehatan takut tindakan disiplin serta takut kehilangan pekerjaan. RSU Monompia GMIBM Kota Kotamobagu terus berupaya untuk meningkatkan mutu pelayanan kesehatan, tetapi keterbatasan sarana dan prasarana serta sumber daya manusia menjadi kendala tesendiri. Kata kunci : Pengetahuan, Medication error, sistem pelaporan

Yasa Putra Sedana is an art studio engaged in dance and percussion, In its activities, Yasa Putra Sedana must be able to compensate with good service to tourists so that tourists feel happy and comfortable. This study aims to analyze the level of tourist satisfaction with the quality of services provided by employee, in order to determine the level of satisfaction of tourists who come to the Yasa Putra Sedana Art Studio and then can be further evaluated. This research was conducted at the Yasa Putra Sedana Art Studio in Banjar Pengaji, Melinggih Kelod Village, the District of Payangan, Gianyar Regency, Bali Province, the type of data in this study used quantitative and qualitative data, where the data were obtained using a questionnaire distribution method, in-depth interviews, observations / Observation and documentation. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling technique, and then the data obtained were analyzed with a qualitative descriptive technique using a Likert scale. The results of this research is, that the level of tourist satisfaction with the quality of service at the Yasa Putra Sedana Art Studio gets a very satisfied value, this is obtained from the results of the calculation of the average score obtained from the distribution of questionnaires from the level of performance and level of importance to all the indicators that affect the level tourist satisfaction, obtained a yield of 101.189% (very satisfied). This study aimed to determine the level of tourist satisfaction and the performance of attractions, accessibilities, and amenities (3As) in Pulesari Tourism Village (PTV). This study uses both qualitative and quantitative (mixed method). The population in this study was tourists who visited PTV during the period of August to September 2018. A hundred samples were collected using Purposive Sampling method. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires, in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. Gradual quantitative-qualitative data analysis is used as a technique to analyse the data. It begins with Likert satisfaction analysis, Importance Performance Analysis, and qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the level of tourist satisfaction was in the satisfied category. Managers need to improve the quality of attraction components and become a priority to meet tourist expectations. Based on this study, the results show that the quality of the 3As component influences the level of satisfaction of visiting tourists. The three components become unity and support each other. A low assessment of one component can be improved by other components that are perceived to have better quality.

This study aims to identify the key elements that should be included in a methodological model to evaluate the sustainability of smart cities and examines the case of Medellín, Colombia, from 2020 to 2021. For this purpose, it adopted a qualitative descriptive methodology divided into three stages: (1) reviewing existing methodologies for smart city evaluation; (2) designing, validating, and administering information collection instruments; and (3) systematizing and analyzing in-depth interviews. The results indicate that the said model should focus on six key variables: government, mobility, sustainability, people, economy, and quality of life. Smart cities should generate synergies, ensuring the interoperability of their services so that their inhabitants have a better quality of life. The added value of the model proposed here is that it incorporates social and political dynamics, which is noteworthy because most tools in this field do not prioritize them and focus on technical, environmental, transportation, planning, and technological factors.
