AbstractThe objectives of the present study were to examine the fatty acid (FA) profiles in serum and in the follicular fluid (FF) and the association between polyunsaturated fatty acid level (PUFA) and follicular growth dynamics following induced luteolysis in dairy cows. A total of 29 dairy cows (CL>25mm, follicle≈15mm) at d0 (start of the experiment) were submitted to ultrasound guided transvaginal follicular aspiration for FF collection from the largest follicle and were injected with 500 μg of cloprostenol. The cows were subdivided into Group A1 (n=11) and Group A2 (n=8) resuming follicular growth either from a secondary follicle less than or larger than 8.5mm, respectively, present at the moment of aspiration and Group A0 (n=10) not resuming follicular growth. Follicular development was monitored daily by ultrasonography until the next dominant follicle reached ≈15mm and was subsequently punctured in Group A1 and A2 (d1). Serum and FF samples for FA determination were taken at d0 from all cows and at d1 in Group A1 and A2. No differences were observed between the FA profile in serum nor in FF between sampling days. Regarding the PUFA levels, the serum linoleic acid (C18:2n6) levels at d0 and d1 were significantly higher than in FF, while alpha linolenic acid (C18:3n3) was lower in the serum than in FF, both at d0 and d1. At d0, a tendency for negative correlation between serum and the FF C18:2n6 with subsequent daily follicular growth rate was observed, while, at d1 there was a strong negative correlation between the serum C18:2n6 and daily growth rate (r=−0.71; p=0.0006). The present study revealed similarities of the FA profiles in the serum and in the FF and association between serum and FF PUFA content with the follicular dynamics after induced luteolysis.

AbstractPostpartum anestrus is a physiological phenomenon in high-producing dairy cows. Static ovaries have been related as major contributors for its occurrence causing a significant reproductive problem to the dairy industry. Different treatment methods have been employed with inconsistent rate of success in initiation of cyclicity, requiring further investigations in order to achieve satisfactory results. The aim of the present study was to compare the ovarian response in cows diagnosed with static ovaries, more than 60 days postpartum using two different hormonal treatment (GnRH and eCG) methods. A total of 58 acyclic cows (no CL, follicles<8mm, P4<0.5ng/mL) were randomly divided into three groups: GnRH (Group 1, n=23), eCG (Group 2, n=23) and Controls (n=12), and allocated thereafter, into subgroups according to the applied doses of GnRH (100μg or 250μg); eCG (750 IU or 1000 IU) whilst control group cows were left untreated. Daily follicular growth rate and treatment respond interval were estimated based on repeated ultrasound examinations. Blood serum P4 sampling was done on d -7, d-0 (start of the experiment) and on d 7 after ovulation. Resumption of cyclic activity occurred in 55.17% (32/58) of the treated cows, 56.52% in Group 1; 60.86% in Group 2 and 41.66% in the control group. Overall, the follicular growth rate was similar between the trials group and significant with regard to the cows in the control group (p<0.05). eCG or GnRH treated cows responded significantly faster 6.85±0.2 and 7.84±0.2 days, respectively, in comparison to the control group cows (17±0.7 days, p<0.001). Treatment with a single dose of GnRH or eCG caused resumption of follicular growth and ovulation following luteogenesis (forming CL) without significant changes in P4 concentrations on day 7 after ovulation (p>0.05). Cows in Group 2 had significantly higher incidence of multiple ovulations than cows in Group 1 (p<0.05). The eCG treatment resulted in a faster response and higher ovulation rate compared to GnRH treatment. In conclusion, both treatments have shown acceptable results in resumption of cyclicity in dairy cows with static ovaries.

We quantified relationships between methane production and milk fatty acid (FA) profile in dairy cattle fed grass- or grass silage-based diets, and determined whether recent prediction equations for methane, based on a wide variety of diets, are applicable to grass- and grass silage-based diets. Data from three studies were used, encompassing four grass herbage and 14 grass silage treatments and 132 individual cow observations. Methane production was measured using respiration chambers and milk fatty acids (FAs) analysed using gas chromatography. The proportion of grass or grass silage (dry matter (DM) basis) was 0.80 ± 0.037. Methane yield averaged 22.3 ± 2.10 g/kg DM intake (DMI) and 14.2 ± 2.90 g/kg fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM). Mixed model univariate regression including a random study effect on intercept was applied to predict methane yield, with individual milk FA concentrations (g/100 g FA) as fixed effects. Of the 42 milk FAs identified, no single FA had a strong positive correlation (r; strong correlation defined as |r| ≥ 0.50) with methane yield (g/kg DMI), and cis-12 C18:1 and cis-9,12,15 C18:3 had a strong negative correlation with methane yield (g/kg DMI). C14:0 iso, C15:0, C15:0 iso, C15:0 anteiso, C16:0, C20:0, cis-11,14 C20:2, cis-5,8,11,14 C20:4, C22:0, cis-7,10,13,16,19 C22:5 and C24:0 had a strong positive correlation with methane yield (g/kg FPCM), and trans-15+cis-11 C18:1, cis-9 C18:1, and cis-11 C20:1 had a strong negative correlation with methane yield (g/kg FPCM). Observed methane yield was compared with methane yield predicted by the equations of van Lingen et al. (2014; Journal of Dairy Science 97, 7115–7132). These equations did not accurately predict methane yield as grams per kilogram DMI (concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.13) or as grams per kilogram FPCM (CCC = 0.22), in particular related to large differences in standard deviation between predicted and observed values. In conclusion, quantitative relationships between milk FA profile and methane yield in cattle fed grass- or grass silage-based diets differ from those determined for other types of diets.

Recent studies have shown that dietary supplementation with sources rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) can improve reproductive perfor-mance of lactating dairy cows. However, no studies have reported the fatty acids composition of follicular fluid (FF) from dairy cows fed high-PUFA diets. This study aimed to evaluate the fatty acids composition of FF from dairy cows fed tropical forage-based diets containing different levels of soybean oil (SO). Four multiparous Holstein-Zebu cows in midlactation (90 ± 25 days in milk) were assigned to 1 of the following dietary treatments (on a dry matter basis): (1) T1 (control) = no SO; (2) T2 = diets containing 1.5% of SO; (3) T3 = diets containing 3.0% of SO; and (4) T4 = diets containing 4.5% of SO. Diets were composed of chopped elephant grass and a concentrate mixture and the forage concentrate ratio was 55 : 45 (dry matter basis). The experimental design was a 4 × 4 Latin square in which each period lasted 21 days. All cows received intravaginal progesterone-releasing devices and follicular waves were synchronized with 0.5 mg of gonadorelin. The FF from dominant follicles was collected by transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration on the last day of each period (Day 21) and centrifuged (10000 × g, 1 min) and the supernatant was frozen at -80°C until fatty acid analysis. Extraction and methylation of fatty acids in FF were performed according to the 1-step simplified method described by Masood A et al. (2005 J. Lipid Res. 46, 2299-2305). The fatty acid profile from FF was determined by gas chromatography as described by Cruz-Hernandez C et al. (2007 J. Dairy Sci. 90, 3786-3801). Treatment effects were determined by regression analysis using the REG procedure of SAS (SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA) and declared significant at P < 0.05. Nearly 30 different fatty acids (70% of the total area) were identified in the FF samples. The most representative fatty acids (% total area) for the 4 dietary treatments (T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively) were C18 : 2 cis - 9, cis - 12 (19.8, 20.3, 16.1, and 24.2), C18 : 0 (17.7, 16.6, 19.5, and 16.8), C16 : 0 (12.2, 10.7, 11.3, and 17.8), and C18 :1 cis - 9 (6.5, 7.3, 5.5, and 7.7). Inclusion of SO in the diet linearly reduced (P < 0.05) concentrations of C16 : 1 cis - 9 (0.8, 0.7, 0.4, and 0.5) and C20 : 3 (1.2, 1.1, 0.5, and 0.7), but linearly increased (P < 0.05) concentrations of C18 : 1 trans - 11 (0.4, 0.4, 0.6, and 1.4), C18 : 1 cis - 11 (0.4, 0.5, 0.4, and 0.9), and C18 : 1 cis - 12 (0.2, 0.5, 0.5, and 0.7) isomers in FF. The increase in the concentration of C18 : 1 trans - 11 in FF from cows fed higher levels of SO was not accompanied by an increase in the proportion of CLA cis - 9, trans - 11 (0.9, 1.0, 0.7, and 0.9 for T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively). It suggests the absence or low activity of A9-desaturase enzyme in the follicular environment, unlike that observed in the mammary gland. In general, our results indicate that fatty acid composition of follicular fluid from lactating dairy cows is sensitive to changes in dietary supply of PUFA. Ultrasound imaging and progesterone (P4) profiles were used to characterize follicular and corpus luteum (CL) growth and regression in 10 cycling dairy cows. Thirteen of sixteen cycles were characterized by two waves of follicular growth, the second wave giving rise to the ovulatory follicle. The remaining three cycles had three waves. There was no difference between two- and three-wave cycles with regard to the day of emergence of the first or second dominant follicle (day 2.5 ± 0.9 vs. day 2.4 ± 1.2 and day 12.4 ± 1.6 vs. day 12.0 ± 2.0, respectively) or the onset of regression of the first dominant follicle (day 12.5 ± 1.5 vs. day 12.3 ± 1.5). In two wave cycles, estrous cycle length was shorter (20.8 ± 1.7 d vs. 29.7 ± 4.9 d), the first day of decline in P4 (day 16.2 ± 1.5 vs. day 23.7 ± 5.5) and the onset of CL regression (day 17.1 ± 1.3 vs. day 24.3 ± 5.5) was earlier. It is concluded that two waves of follicular growth in an estrous cycle is the norm in lactating dairy cows. The presence of an additional wave is due to a prolonged luteal phase. Milk and its derivatives are important foods that contribute to daily nutrient requirements and improve consumers’ health. This study evaluated the effects of supplementing the diet of lactating dairy cows with sunflower oil (SFO), selenium, and vitamin E on the milk’s fatty acid profile and fat oxidative stability as well as the acceptability of the milk by consumers. For this purpose, 32 Jersey dairy cows were allocated to four treatment groups for 60 days, as follows: C (control diet); A (3.5 mg/kg DM (dry matter) organic selenium + 2000 IU vitamin E/cow per day); O (4% SFO DM); OA (equal doses of A and O treatments). The inclusion of SFO decreased the contents of 10:0, 10:1, 11:0, 12:0, 12:1, 14:0, and 9c-14:1 fatty acids as well as odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (13:0, iso 13:0, anteiso 13:0, 15:0, iso 15:0, and 17:0). There was also a tendency for 8:0 and 16:0 fatty acid concentrations to decrease when SFO was included in the cows´ diet. SFO decreased the concentration of 10:0 to 15:0 fatty acids in milk. The sum of the conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), conjugated alpha-linolenic acid intermediates (CLnAs; 18:3 ω6 + 18:3 ω3), and 22:0 fatty acids in milk tended to increase, and there were significant increases in 18:0 and 9c11t-18:2 with SFO. In terms of the effects of SFO on the health-related lipid indices, the atherogenicity index tended to decrease and h/H tended to increase. When cows were supplemented with antioxidants, the concentration of 20:2 fatty acids decreased, the 6 + 7 + 8 + 9t-18:1, 16t-18:1, 20:0, 22:2, and 24:0 fatty acid concentrations increased, and there was a trend for the 22:1 ω9 fatty acid concentration to increase with antioxidants plus oil. There was a tendency for ω6 fatty acids and ω6/ω3 to increase with milk treated with antioxidants plus oil. The oxidative stability of milk was not influenced by the presence of SFO or antioxidants in the diet of dairy cows. Consumers desired the color and mouthfeel of the milk that was treated with SFO. Cows fed with 4% sunflower oil produced milk with an improved fatty acid profile for human nutrition, containing a higher CLA content and an improved ratio of hypocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic fatty acids, without increasing the milk’s susceptibility to oxidation. The milk was also rated as being more acceptable by consumers.

La dinámica folicular ovárica monitoreada por vía transrectal (TR) y transvaginal (TV) en ondas sucesivas en llamas fue estudiada en 10 llamas con más de 4 años, multíparas, sin cría, estado corporal de 3.0, durante un periodo de 90 días en la época reproductiva. Se utilizó el ecógrafo Sonostar SS8® con un transductor lineal para el examen transrectal y transductor microconvexo endocavitario para el examen transvaginal, ambos con frecuencia de 6.5 MHz. El intervalo inter-onda fue de 20±4.4 y 22.5±5.3 por vía TR y TV, respectivamente; el número de folículos por cohorte fue 5.21±0.92 y 6.38±1.26 para TR y TV, respectivamente (p=0.0011); el diámetro máximo de folículos fue 12.49±3.57 mm para TR y 13.56±3.91 mm para TV; la tasa de crecimiento fue de 0.70±0.35 y 0.67±0.32 mm/día para TR y TV, respectivamente. La ecuación de regresión para relación del diámetro máximo folicular y duración de onda folicular vía TR fue de y=0.89766x+6.5554 (R²=0.423) y para la vía TV de y=0.8466x+10.184 (R²=0.479). La duración de las fases foliculares fue similar entre ambas técnicas con excepción de la fase de dominancia (10.2±3.19 días para TR y 8.67±2.46 para TV, p=0.0418). La relación entre el diámetro folicular y número de folículos detectados presentó una correlación negativa baja (R²=-0.0827 para TV y R²=-0.0876 para TR). En conclusión, el transductor endocavitario transvaginal permite determinar con mayor precisión las características de dinámica folicular en llamas en sus fases de reclutamiento, dominancia y regresión con sobreposición de ondas foliculares como característica importante.The ovarian follicular dynamics monitored by transrectal (TR) and transvaginal (TV) routes in successive waves was studied in 10 llamas older than 4 years, multiparous, without calves at foot, body condition of 3.0, during a period of 90 days in the reproductive season. The inter-wave interval was 20 ± 4.4 and 22.5 ± 5.3 via TR and VT, respectively; the number of follicles per cohort was 5.21 ± 0.92 and 6.38 ± 1.26 for TR and TV, respectively (p=0.0011); the maximum diameter of follicles was 12.49 ± 3.57 mm for TR and 13.56 ± 3.91 mm for TV; the growth rate was 0.70 ± 0.35 and 0.67 ± 0.32 mm/day for TR and TV, respectively. The regression equation for the ratio of the maximum follicular diameter and duration of follicular wave via TR was y=0.89766x+6.5554 (R²=0.423) and for the TV route y=0.8466x+10.184 (R²=0.479). The duration of the follicular phases was similar between both techniques except for the dominance phase (10.2±3.19 days for TR and 8.67±2.46 for TV, p=0.0418). The relationship between the follicular diameter and the number of follicles detected showed a low negative correlation (R²=-0.0827 for TV and R²=-0.0876 for TR). In conclusion, the transvaginal endocavitary transducer makes it possible to determine with greater precision the characteristics of llama follicular dynamics in their recruitment, dominance and regression phases with overlapping of follicular waves as an important characteristic.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, almost all European countries recorded negative rates of economic growth, with relatively large variations from one country to another in terms of the depth of the recession. From the expenditure side, the decline was most pronounced in the segment of personal consumption and investment. Observed by sectors, the largest decline was recorded in transport and tourism, manufacturing industry and construction. This paper analyzes three groups of factors that could have potentially influenced the variation in the depth of the recession in European countries in 2020 - the application of non-pharmacological epidemiological measures, the structure of the economy and the fiscal policy response. The data reveal a relatively strong negative correlation between the GDP growth rate and the share of the tourism sector, as well as a moderate negative correlation between the growth rate and the stringency of epidemiological measures and a moderate positive correlation between the size of direct fiscal stimuli and economic growth. The decline in Serbia's GDP in 2020 was significantly lower than the average decline in EU countries. During most of 2020, Serbia applied looser epidemiological measures, while the share of the tourism sector in Serbia's GDP is significantly smaller, and the contraction in this sector was lower than the European average. Direct fiscal stimuli in Serbia were significantly higher (by 48 percent) than the European average. This may indicate that these three groups of factors could potentially explain the lower decline of the Serbian economy compared to the European average in 2020. To draw final conclusions on this issue, econometric modeling would be required, taking into account the influence of other factors, as well.

ABSTRACT Estradiol benzoate (EB), estradiol cypionate (EC), and gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) were evaluated as ovulation inducers for TAI of crossbred lactating cows. In experiment I (n = 45), the follicular dynamics was evaluated, while in experiment II (n = 171) the reproductive efficiency was evaluated. All females were submitted to a synchronization protocol: insertion on day 0 (D0) of intravaginal progesterone -release intravaginal device (PRID; 1g) plus administration of EB 2mg; D8, PRID removal, administration of 0.150mg PGF2α and 400 IU of eCG, and cows were allocated into three treatments: 1) TEB9 - IM administration of 1mg EB on D9 and AI performed 52 hours after PRID removal; 2) TEC - IM administration of 1mg EC on D8 and AI performed 48 hours after withdrawal of PRID; and 3) TGnRH - administration of 100pg GnRH on D10 and AI performed 52 hours after removal of PRID. The follicular growth rate was lower in the EC group (p <0.05). There was no effect of treatments on ovulation and pregnancy rates (p >0.05). The use of EB, EC, and GnRH as ovulation inducers in the TAI protocol did not show marked differences in the evaluated patterns of follicular dynamics and pregnancy.
