Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate possible application of fast design prototyping methods for wind-steering systems used in offshore sailing yachts. The development of such methods would help to speed up the construction work and reduce the scope of necessary experimental research, prior to implementation of the system. In the present work, based on an analysis of existing designs of windvane systems, a preliminary selection of the system configuration has been undertaken, in terms of a compromise between efficiency, performance, and design complexity. Construction design of a single-stage, servo – pendulum system, has been developed by using the Autodesk Inventor design package. Next, based on the design data, a simulation model of the system, has been produced by using Matlab - Simulink software and SimMechanics library. The model was further verified in terms of kinematics mapping with the use of Matlab visualization tools.

Selecting check index quantitatively is the core of the calibration of micro traffic simulation parameters at signal intersection. Five indexes in the node (intersection) module of VISSIM were selected as the check index set. Twelve simulation parameters in the core module were selected as the simulation parameters set. Optimal process of parameter calibration was proposed and model of the intersection of Huangcun west street and Xinghua street in Beijing was built in VISSIM to verify it. The sensitivity analysis between each check index and simulation parameter in their own set was conducted respectively. Sensitive parameter sets of different check indices were obtained and compared. The results show that different indexes have different size of set, and average vehicle delay's is maximum, so it's necessary to select index quantitatively. The results can provide references for scientific selection of the check indexes and improve the study efficiency of parameter calibration.

AbstractHigh fidelity modelling and simulation are prerequisites for ensuring confidence in decision making during aircraft design and development, including performance and handling qualities, control law developments, aircraft dynamic loads analysis, and the creation of a realistic simulation environment. The techniques of system identification provide a systematic framework for ‘enhancing’ a physics–based simulation model derived from first principles and aircraft design data. In this paper we adopt a frequency domain approach for model enhancement and fidelity improvement of a baseline FLIGHTLAB Bell 412 helicopter model developed at the University of Liverpool. Predictability tests are based on responses to multi–step control inputs. The techniques have been used to generate one, three, and six degree-of-freedom linear models, and their derivatives and predictability are compared to evaluate and augment the fidelity of the FLIGHTLAB model. The enhancement process thus involves augmenting the simulation model based on the identified parameters. The results are reported within the context of the rotorcraft simulation fidelity project, Lifting Standards, involving collaboration with the Flight Research Laboratory (NRC, Ottawa), supported with flight testing on the ASRA research helicopter.

In order to face the challenge of our economy and the environment, it is needed to speed up the energy structure transition and UItra High voltage (UHV) transmission has become an inevitable choice. Researches on the influence of UHV project to Jiangxi power grid are carried out in this paper. Using advanced digital power system simulator (ADPSS), the real-time simulation model of Jiangxi power grid is build up including the UHV project. Based on the simulation model, the problem of low frequency oscillation in Jiangxi power system is studied after the UHV power transmission project accessed. The influence of the UHV transmission line faults on system stability of Jiangxi grid is also researched.

Generalization the experience building for the cultivation of champignons shows the diversity of construction solutions. The method of layer-by-layer assembly with galvanized steel and aluminum alloy coverings is economically feasible to use in champignons of frame structural scheme, enclosing structures of industrial premises. However, the technologically required wet air conditions of the premises and aggressive gases during construction design complicate the selection of a rational type of outer layers of enclosing structures. To reveal the rational material of coverings in the production premises of champignons, corrosion tests are carried out on samples of aluminum alloys of the Al-Mg, Al-Mn, Al-Mg-Si systems, technical aluminum, galvanized steel and galvanized steel with a protective coating. The type and corrosion penetration rate are set for the exposed samples. According to the test results, suitable covering materials for various types of champignon production premises are determined

This chapter provides an overview of gaze-based interaction techniques. We will first explore specific techniques intended to make target selection easier and to avoid the Midas touch problem. We will then take a look at techniques that do not require the use of special widgets in the interface but instead manipulate the rendering on the basis of eye gaze to facilitate the selection of small targets. Dwell-based interaction makes use of fixations; recent research has looked into the other option, using saccades as the basis for eye gestures. We will also discuss examples of how eye gaze has been used with other input modalities (blinks and winks, keyboard and mouse, facial gestures, head movements, and speech) to speed up interaction. Finally, we will discuss examples of interaction techniques in the context of a specific area of application: navigating information spaces.

This chapter focuses on data searching, which is nowadays mostly based on similarity. The similarity search is challenging due to its computational complexity, and also the fact that similarity is subjective and context dependent. The authors assume the metric space model of similarity, defined by the domain of objects and the metric function that measures the dissimilarity of object pairs. The volume of contemporary data is large, and the time efficiency of similarity query executions is essential. This chapter investigates transformations of metric space to Hamming space to decrease the memory and computational complexity of the search. Various challenges of the similarity search with sketches in the Hamming space are addressed, including the definition of sketching transformation and efficient search algorithms that exploit sketches to speed-up searching. The indexing of Hamming space and a heuristic to facilitate the selection of a suitable sketching technique for any given application are also considered.

There is a large number of tools for the simulation of traffic and routes in public transport systems. These use different simulation models (macroscopic, microscopic, and mesoscopic). Unfortunately, these simulation tools are limited when simulating a complete public transport system, which includes all its buses and routes (up to 270 for the London Underground). The processing times for these type of simulations increase in an unmanageable way since all the relevant variables that are required to simulate consistently and reliably the system behavior must be included. In this paper, we present a new simulation model for public transport routes’ simulation called Masivo. It runs the public transport stops’ operations in OpenCL work items concurrently, using a multi-core high performance platform. The performance results of Masivo show a speed-up factor of 10.2 compared with the simulator model running with one compute unit and a speed-up factor of 278 times faster than the validation simulator. The real-time factor achieved was 3050 times faster than the 10 h simulated duration, for a public transport system of 300 stops, 2400 buses, and 456,997 passengers.

Abstract Research on plenums partitioned with multiple baffles in the industrial field has been exhaustive. Most researchers have explored noise reduction effects based on the transfer matrix method and the boundary element method. However, maximum noise reduction of a plenum within a constrained space, which frequently occurs in engineering problems, has been neglected. Therefore, the optimum design of multi-chamber plenums becomes essential. In this paper, two kinds of multi-chamber plenums (Case I: a two-chamber plenum that is partitioned with a centre-opening baffle; Case II: a three-chamber plenum that is partitioned with two centre-opening baffles) within a fixed space are assessed. In order to speed up the assessment of optimal plenums hybridized with multiple partitioned baffles, a simplified objective function (OBJ) is established by linking the boundary element model (BEM, developed using SYSNOISE) with a polynomial neural network fit with a series of real data – input design data (baffle dimensions) and output data approximated by BEM data in advance. To assess optimal plenums, a genetic algorithm (GA) is applied. The results reveal that the maximum value of the transmission loss (TL) can be improved at the desired frequencies. Consequently, the algorithm proposed in this study can provide an efficient way to develop optimal multi-chamber plenums for industry.
