Abstract The paper concerns the evaluation of the initial stiffness of selected cohesive soils based on laboratory tests. The research materials used in this study were clayey soils taken from the area of the road embankment No. WD-18, on the 464th km of the S2 express-way, Konotopa-Airport route, Warsaw. The initial stiffness is represented here by the shear modulus (Gmax) determined during resonant column tests. In the article, a number of literature empirical formulas for defining initial value of the shear modulus of soils being examined were adopted from the literature in order to analyze the data set. However, a large discrepancy between laboratory test results and the values of Gmax calculated from empirical relationships resulted in the rejection of these proposals. They are inaccurate and do not allow for an exact evaluation of soil stiffness for selected cohesive soils. Hence, the authors proposed their own empirical formula that enables the evaluation of the test soils’ Gmax in an easy and uncomplicated way. This unique formula describes mathematically the effect of certain soil parameters, namely mean effective stress ( p′) and void ratio (e), on the initial soil stiffness.

Gunung Tugel is an area that located Patikraja Region, Southern Banyumas. Thetopography of the area is mostly mountainous with a slope that varies from flat to steep. Thiscondition makes to many areas of this region potentially landslide. In 2015, a landslideoccurred in Jalan Gunung Tugel. The Landslide occurred along 70 meters on the half of theroad and causing traffic Patikraja-Purwokerto disturbed. To repair the damage of the road andavoid further landslides, necessary to analyze slope stability. This study is to analyze landslidereinforcement that occurred at Gunung Tugel and divides into 3 step. The first step is fieldinvestigation to determine the condition of the location and dimensions of landslides. Thesecond step is to know the soil parameters and analyzes data were obtained from the field. Andthe final step is analyzed of the landslide reinforcement by using data obtained from thepreceding step. In this research, will be applied three variations of reinforcement i.e. retainingwall, pile foundation and combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall. Slope stabilityanalysis was conducted using limit equilibrium method. Based on the analysis conducted onthe three variations reinforcement, combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall morerecommended. Application of and combine both of pile foundations and retaining wall is themost realistic option in consideration of ease of implementation at the field. From thecalculations have been done, in order to achieve stable conditions need retaining wall withdimensions of 2 meters high with 2,5 meters of width. DPT is supported by two piles of eachcross-section with 0.3 meters of diameter along 10 meters with 1-meter in space. Abstrak: Gunung Tugel adalah salah satu daerah yang terletak di Kecamatan PatikrajaKabupaten Banyumas bagian selatan. Kondisi topografi daerah tersebut sebagian besar berupapegunungan dengan kemiringan yang bervariasi dari landai sampai curam. Hal inimenyebabkan banyak daerah di wilayah Gunung Tugel yang berpotensi terjadi bencana tanahlongsor. Pada tahun 2015, peristiwa longsor kembali terjadi di ruas Jalan Gunung Tugel.Kelongsoran yang terjadi sepanjang 70 meter pada separuh badan jalan tersebut menyebabkanarus lalu lintas patikraja-purwokerto menjadi terganggu. Untuk memperbaiki kerusakan jalandan mencegah kelongsoran kembali, diperlukan analisis perkuatan tanah terhadap lerengtersebut. Studi analisis penanggulangan kelongsoran jalan yang terjadi di Gunung Tugel inidilakukan dengan tiga tahapan. Tahapan pertama adalah investigasi lapangan untukmengetahui kondisi lokasi dan dimensi longsor serta mengambil sampel tanah di lapangan.Tahap kedua adalah melakukan pengujian parameter tanah dan analisis data yang diperolehdari lapangan. Tahapan yang terakhir adalah analisis penanggulangan longsor denganmenggunakan data yang diperoleh dari tahapan sebelumnya. Pada penelitan ini, akanditerapkan tiga variasi perkuatan lereng yaitu dinding penahan tanah (DPT), turap dan DPTyang dikombinasikan dengan pondasi tiang. Analisis stabilitas lereng dilakukan dengan metodekeseimbangan batas. Berdasarkan hasil analisis yang dilakukan terhadap ketiga variasiperkuatan, DPT dengan kombinasi tiang pancang lebih direkomendasikan. Penerapan DPTyang dikombinasikan dengan minipile merupakan pilihan yang paling realistis denganpertimbangan tingkat kemudahan pelaksanaan di lapangan. Dari perhitungan yang telahdilakukan, untuk mencapai kondisi stabil diperlukan DPT dengan dimensi tinggi 2 meterdengan lebar bawah 2,5 meter. DPT tersebut ditopang oleh dua tiang tiap penampangmelintang dengan diameter 0,3 meter sepanjang 10 meter dengan jarak antar tiang 1 meter.kata kunci: tanah longsor, perkuatan tanah, metode keseimbangan batas

This work aims at classifying the road condition with data mining methods using simple acceleration sensors and gyroscopes installed in vehicles. Two classifiers are developed with a support vector machine (SVM) to distinguish between different types of road surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete, and obstacles, such as potholes or railway crossings. From the sensor signals, frequency-based features are extracted, evaluated automatically with MANOVA. The selected features and their meaning to predict the classes are discussed. The best features are used for designing the classifiers. Finally, the methods, which are developed and applied in this work, are implemented in a Matlab toolbox with a graphical user interface. The toolbox visualizes the classification results on maps, thus enabling manual verification of the results. The accuracy of the cross-validation of classifying obstacles yields 81.0% on average and of classifying road material 96.1% on average. The results are discussed on a comprehensive exemplary data set.

In 2010, an earthquake in the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, happened quite by chance an accident and killed over 300000 people. According to historical data such an earthquake has not occurred in the area. Unpredictability of earthquakes has necessitated the need for comprehensive mitigation efforts to minimize deaths and injuries. Blocked roads, caused by debris of destroyed buildings, may increase the difficulty of rescue activities. In this case, a damage map, which specifies blocked and unblocked roads, can be definitely helpful for a rescue team. <br><br> In this paper, a novel method for providing destruction map based on pre-event vector map and high resolution world view II satellite images after earthquake, is presented. For this purpose, firstly in pre-processing step, image quality improvement and co-coordination of image and map are performed. Then, after extraction of texture descriptor from the image after quake and SVM classification, different terrains are detected in the image. Finally, considering the classification results, specifically objects belong to “debris” class, damage analysis are performed to estimate the damage percentage. In this case, in addition to the area objects in the “debris” class their shape should also be counted. The aforementioned process are performed on all the roads in the road layer.In this research, pre-event digital vector map and post-event high resolution satellite image, acquired by Worldview-2, of the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, were used to evaluate the proposed method. The algorithm was executed on 1200×800 m2 of the data set, including 60 roads, and all the roads were labelled correctly. The visual examination have authenticated the abilities of this method for damage assessment of urban roads network after an earthquake.

Road markings provide drivers with the information necessary for their comfortable and safe journey. To achieve that, they must be visible in all driving conditions, which means that they have to be renewed and maintained in a timely manner. This research aims to develop a model for predicting the service life of paint, thermoplastic and agglomerate cold plastic road markings. The research comprised 5218.00 km (115 roads) of solvent-borne paint road markings, 579.00 km (30 roads) of thermoplastic and 4979.00 km (30 roads) of agglomerate cold plastic road markings. The retroreflectivity of road markings was measured two times (after renewal and after winter) using the dynamic measuring method. Service life prediction model was developed for each material based on factors such as initial retroreflectivity, road marking age and position, annual average daily traffic and winter maintenance activity of the road. Developed models were tested using a new data set, and all three models showed satisfactory accuracy. The application of the model enables road authorities to optimise road-marking maintenance activities, while at the same time, ensuring the level of visibility required by drivers.

In 2012, the Lithuanian Road Administration initiated a three-year research project ‘The study of effective winter road maintenance of national significance roads in Lithuania’. The main purpose of this research was to optimize road maintenance in winter and to determine the most effective means of combating slippery conditions. The research project was carried out by two institutions: the Road Research Institute of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and JSC ‘Problematika’. JSC ‘Problematika’ conducted exploratory experiments, which were divided into two phases. In the first phase of the experiment, five different snow melting materials (Slipperiness Reducing Materials – SRMs) were investigated in the laboratory. Different test methods were used in this investigation. In the second phase of the experiment, three SRMs with different properties were selected, and experimental road sections were set up to determine the road slipperiness and the change in coating layer thickness over time concerning different environmental conditions, as well as different snow and ice layer thicknesses. An optical remote sensor of Road Condition Monitor (RCM 411) was used for friction measurements on the roads. This report covers the laboratory test results of five different SRMs, road slipperiness measurement results using three selected SRMs and their analysis, comparison of the performance efficiency of the most widely used SRMs in Lithuania and the tested SRMs under different environmental conditions.

Abstract Aggregates are necessary materials for the construction industry. Owing to their favourable properties, andesites are frequently used rock materials; hence, the investigation of their mechanical and aggregate properties has great significance. This paper introduces the analyses of 13 Hungarian andesite lithotypes. The samples were collected from six andesite quarries in Hungary. Cylindrical specimens and aggregate samples with 10.0/14.0-mm-sized grains were made from rock blocks. The specimens were tested in dry, water-saturated and freeze–thaw subjected conditions. Bulk density, uniaxial compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, indirect tensile strength and water absorption were measured. The abrasion resistance was tested by micro-Deval tests. The flakiness indexes of the samples were also measured. The data set of the laboratory test results provided input for further, one- and two-variable statistical analyses. According to the test results, there is no significant difference between the strength parameters measured in water-saturated and in freeze–thaw subjected conditions. The correlation and regression analyses revealed relationships between some rock mechanical parameters, as well as between micro-Deval coefficient and uniaxial compressive strength.

Scouring of soil around large-diameter monopile will alter the stress history, and therefore the stiffness and strength of the soil at shallow depth, with important consequence to the lateral behavior of piles. The existing study is mainly focused on small-diameter piles under scouring, where the soil around a pile is analyzed with two simplified approaches: (I) simply removing the scour layers without changing the strength and stiffness of the remaining soils, or (II) solely considering the effects of stress history on the soil strength. This study aims to investigate and quantify the scour effect on the lateral behavior of monopile, based on an advanced hypoplastic model considering the influence of stress history on both soil stiffness and strength. It is revealed that ignorance about the stress history effect (due to scouring) underestimates the extent of the soil failure wedge around the monopile, while overestimates soil stiffness and strength. As a result, a large-diameter pile (diameter D = 5 m) in soft clay subjected to a souring depth of 0.5 D has experienced reductions in ultimate soil resistance and initial stiffness of the p-y curves by 40% and 26%, and thus an increase of pile head deflection by 49%. Due to the inadequacy to consider the stress history effects revealed above, the existing approach (I) has led to non-conservative estimation, while the approach (II) has resulted in an over-conservative prediction.

This paper includes a summary of a geotechnical investigation of an embankment site at station 47 + 300 along the Irbid–Amman Highway in Jordan. The embankment suffered instability problems. This study includes geological and geotechnical mapping of the study area as well as determination of the engineering properties of the various materials encountered at the site.Stability analysis is carried out for the original embankment to explain the failure mechanism, assess the condition at the time of failure, and evaluate the soil parameters for use in stability analysis of remedial measures. Stability analysis is carried out for remedial works. Recommendations are suggested to stabilize the sliding area and to repair the road traversing this landslide zone. Key words : slope stability, embankment, remediation.

Recently, the road and railways infrastructure developments in Norway have led to renewed interests on the geotechnical challenges associated with slope stability under freezing-thawing cycles. Despite the amount of research available on the topic, there are few comprehensive studies involving laboratory testing, numerical analysis, and field monitoring of a slope during a freezing–thawing. In this case study, a critical slope was identified in a cold region based on field and laboratory tests, and a series of numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate the governing factor of slope stability using finite element methods. A remote monitoring system was installed on a real scale man-made slope to observe its behavior against the governing factors of slope stability. As a result, it was found that slope stability at the critical slope was significantly impacted by the freezing–thawing action, which was confirmed by the initial field observations from 2019 to 2020. Later, continuous monitoring data could be used to update soil parameters and to implement an early warning system for the high risky slope areas effected by freezing–thawing action in many cold regions.
