The number of underage accidents in Jember Regency in 2011-2012 increased from 37 to 190 cases. Therefore, bicycle and pedestrian paths were planned through the School Safe Route program that could encourage students to choose to ride a bicycle or walking. The method of this study was the Level of Service analysis (LOS), student and travel characteristics, cross tabs, bicycle lanes, pedestrians, and road equipment facilities. The results showed that the level of road service on each road section varied, including LOS A, B, D and E. The characteristic and common cross tabs analysis results showed that most transportations used by students were motorcycles. Still, there was a relatively large proportion of students’ willingness to change their transportation mode in operational conditions if bicycle and pedestrian path facilities were provided. Cycle path analysis showed that the types of bicycle lanes were planned, specifically type A and C, with a bicycle lane width was 1.44 m for each lane. From the calculation of the minimum effective width of the sidewalk obtained 1.01 m with a crossing facility in the form of a pelican crossing with waiting stalls. Several road equipment facilities were planned, such as traffic signs, road markings and Traffic Signaling Equipment (TSE). Bicycle and pedestrian routes were planned at Tawang Mangu Street, Danau Toba Street, Mastrip Barat Street, Kalimantan Street, Jawa Street, Karimata Street, M.T. Haryono Street, Letjen S. Parman Street, Letjen Panjaitan Street and Letjen Suprapto Street.

As roadway resources are being occupied by curbside parking and because of the operational characteristics of parking maneuvers, the capacity of the adjacent travel lane can be significantly reduced. To analyze the influence of curbside parking on the capacity of the bicycle lane, a conflict technique based on additive conflict flow was applied to establish the base capacity model. The actual capacity of the bicycle lane with curb parking was then established by adjusting the base capacity to reflect the influence: lane width, the time influence of parking maneuvers, and proportion of e-bikes. Eight datasets from the exclusive bicycle lanes with different widths and parking maneuvers were collected in Nanjing, China for calibration and evaluation purposes. As a result of a higher number of parking maneuvers, the Emeiling Road was taken as the main case study. The capacity of the bicycle lane was calculated, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was validated by the speed-density-volume relationship model. The proposed model was applied to analyze the effect of different positions of parking berths on the capacity. The results indicate that, with around 65% share of e-bikes, the estimated capacity of Emeiling Road is 2622 bicycles/h, decreasing by 47.10% under the influence of curbside parking. The results also imply that the berths near the openings of the isolation belt have less influence than those in the middle position. These findings could be helpful and useful for practitioners to improve the capacity of bicycle lanes under the influence of curbside parking.

Abstract: This paper proposes a method for analyzing level of service at toll plazas. Abstract The Greek economic crisis of 2009 onwards has affected all aspects of social and economic life of the country, including transportation. Taking into account the link between the economic crisis and transportation, the present study aims to investigate the way that the economic crisis has affected the interurban travel rail habits of the citizens of Athens, the capital of Greece. We conducted a study, using a questionnaire survey with 400 participants, to investigate the general trends concerning the purpose and the frequency of railway travelling and the restrictions of their travel activities due to the economic recession. The results of this study show that more than half of respondents declared that there is not any great difference in their use of rail as transport during last years, while they express a positive opinion as they attribute it to the higher safety and comfort of railway compared to other transportation modes. However, the cost of the ticket and the provided level of service are two significant factors for the participants for the choice of their transportation mode.

Evaluating the level of service (LOS) of bicycle lanes is essential in planning, designing, and maintaining bicycle infrastructure. This study presents a new concept—the cyclist domain—for characterizing interactions between cyclists and proposes a cyclist-domain-based method for evaluating the LOS of bicycle lanes. Unlike conventional bicycle lane LOS evaluation method, which counts the weighted events numbers and may generate inaccurate results and even misleading decisions, we specified four types of overlapping cyclist domains to characterize potential impacts in various riding events. The cyclist domain influence ratio (CDIR) derived from cycling trajectories is used to measure the negative impact between cyclists. We then propose an LOS evaluation method for bicycle lanes based on CDIRs. The user comfort is defined as the sum of products of CDIRs and respective durations. The bicycle lane LOS is then evaluated by the average comfort of all users. The case study shows that the proposed method can efficiently and effectively evaluate the bicycle lane LOS.

Bicyclists may cross the bicycle lane and occupy the adjacent motor lanes for some reason. The mixed traffic consisting of cars and bicycles shows very complicated dynamitic patterns and higher accident risk. To investigate the reason behind such phenomenon, the lifetime analysis method is adopted to examine the observed data for the behavior that bicycles cross the bicycle lane and occupy the adjacent motor lanes. The concepts named valid volume and probability of lane-keeping behavior are introduced to evaluate the influence of various external factors such as lane width and curb parking, and a semiparametric method is used to estimate the model with censored data. Six variables are used to accommodate the effects of traffic conditions. After the model estimation, the effects of the selected variables on the lane-keeping behavior are discussed. The results are expected to give a better understanding of the bicyclist behavior.

To provide a knowledge basis for updating the design speed in bicycle facility codes, this paper examines factors that influence bicycle free-flow speed. We investigated six segments of Nanjing’s separated bicycle lane and established a generalized linear model of the relationship between bicycle free-flow speed and bicyclists’ gender, age, bicycle type, lane width, bicycle lateral position, and travel period. With the model, we determined the statistical significance of each factor and assessed each factor’s impact extent. Through comparing the 85th percentile speeds of different groups, we proposed the recommended values and a method for calculating the design speed of separate bicycle lanes. The following results and conclusions were obtained: (1) The significant influential factors of bicycle free-flow speed were bicyclists’ gender and age, bicycle type, lane width, and bicycles’ lateral position. (2) Bicycle type had the greatest impact on bicycle free-flow speed, following by bicycle lateral position, gender, age, and lane width in sequence. (3) The recommended design speeds for separate lanes of less than 3.5 m and the wider lanes were 25 km/h and 30 km/h, respectively.
