Purpose Blockchain technology offers a lot of potential benefits in supply chain management. However, there is a need of a reference model which addresses the gaps in existing frameworks. This paper aims to propose a blockchain technology-based reference model which can be applied to global logistics operations. Design/methodology/approach The researchers have integrated the fit-for-purpose theoretical framework and prototyping methodology to design the reference model, a blockchain-based logistics, tracking and traceability system (BLTTS). The researchers demonstrated the application of the reference model through a health-care supply chain case study. The proposed BLTTS can be implemented across global logistics operations for business performance improvement. Findings The research provides a framework and recommendations for global companies to consider when adopting the blockchain technology for implementation. The researchers found that the Ethereum blockchain technology improves security of the data shared within the block through the secure hashing algorithm 1. The hash algorithm ensures anonymity of the involved parties. The model integrates blockchain with supply chain thus creating transparent process, efficiency and real-time communication. Research limitations/implications The reference model will offer a better solution to global logistics operations challenges. It provides recommendations to key stakeholders involved in logistics operations segment of the logistics industry while adopting blockchain technology. Apart from the methodological limitation of the study, the system compatibility and the layer configuration aspects might be posing potential challenges while upscaling the implementation. Originality/value The proposed reference model overcomes the drawbacks of existing models as it integrates Ethereum technology. In addition, the researchers have applied the model to demonstrate its functioning in real-time environment, which could guide for future research.

Decision-making in complex logistics systems involves high risks and associated impacts. A way to forecast the impacts of these decisions is through the use of systems simulation projects, where the systematic impacts of the parameters can be visualized. This study presents a project based on Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) that analyses Brazilian soybean export logistics from producing regions to main international customers. The strategic analysis of a global logistics system using DES is a particularity of this study. At the conception stage, the conceptual modelling was made using IDEF-SIM (Integrated Definition Methods – Simulation) method, which allowed a better abstraction of reality and more accurate model implementation. The experimental analysis took place through the construction of 39 scenarios with specific characteristics that verified system behaviours through proposed changes. The analyses and decisions are based on costs. The simulations indicated the necessity for: a) an integrated management between the systems agents; b) the development of internal transportation infrastructure, especially railways and waterways, to increase competitiveness of Brazilian soybeans in the international market.

The case discusses the various factors that bolstered positioning Dubai as the ideal location for a logistics hub, located at the crossroads of international trade and commerce between the Eastern and Western worlds. Dubai is also regarded as the gateway to the world’s most progressive markets which include Greater Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the East European countries. The case illustrates some of the critical challenges faced by the city in particular and the country as a whole, in the past decade, thereby evaluating the issues and risks that can hinder its strategic logistics developmental roadmap. The case can be taken up for subjects such as logistics and supply chain management, operations management, global logistics systems, warehouse management and strategic management, and to enrich concepts related but not limited to facility location strategy, logistics network expansion strategy, country analysis, distribution hub location strategy, etc.

The recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the activities of economic operators in the vast majority of sectors. It is obvious that the impact of the pandemic factor on the transport and logistics sector has reached a significant scale. Logistics companies involved in the movement (delivery) and storage of goods (cargo) were directly affected by SARS-CoV-2. As an integral part of production and distribution chains both domestically and in the global market, logistics companies directly promote trade and commerce and help companies deliver their products (goods) to customers (buyers, consumers). Thus, supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic significantly affect the competitiveness of companies, communications, economic growth, job creation and preservation, business scaling. The paper examines the functioning of logistics systems and international transport supply chains in the difficult conditions of recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A critical analysis of the architecture, capabilities and efficiency of global logistics and the challenges that shape modern trends and behaviour (production, sales, marketing, etc.) of economic entities. The paper examines the effects of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic on the efficiency of these systems, namely – economic and marketing aspects, as well as changes in the organizational structure. The study identifies and analyses current transformations of trade and logistics relations and emphasizes the need to develop a new logistics architecture taking into account key factors influencing the industry through the definition of a set of economic (financial, commercial, investment) indicators that reflect the state of the industry with further development of effective strategic measures to support and develop logistics architecture based on innovation and implementation of non-conflicting business practices.

AbstractThe digitalization of logistics processes is often based on distributed models and decentralized control. As these logistics models constitute an important part of Industrie 4.0 concepts they must be powerful enough to cover dynamic processes and must enable a host of functions such as goal-oriented, reactive, pro-active, communicative, cooperative, competitive, and learning behaviors. In addition, these distributed models must allow for simulating, planning, allocating, scheduling, and optimizing logistics tasks. This implies that they must be able to act through communication channels with each other thus establishing logistics social communities.Multiagent Systems (MAS) have been around for more than 30 years and lend themselves to the implementation of these distributed models needed for autonomous and cooperating logistics processes. It will be described and also demonstrated by three case studies why MAS are well suited for social and learning logistics systems. It will be shown how the resulting distributed MAS models provide the required functionalities for production and transportation logistics including the handling of dynamic local events as an essential feature for the successful planning, scheduling, optimizing, monitoring, and control of global logistics processes.

The main purpose of the paper is to identify and analyse the principal factors shaping the global logistics area as well as to point out key tendencies of its development within the global economy. The author also makes an attempt to assess the influence of the global logistics system on the Polish logistics system. The purpose of the analysis carried out on the basis of reports and accounts published by international organizations is to compare the main tendencies observed within both logistics systems, indicate the differences between them, and specify the reasons behind them. The author indicates the activities and measures necessary to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of the Polish logistics system, especially its maritime sector. This can only be achieved by facilitating the functioning of global logistics chains and ensuring that Polish SCM meets global standards.
