Preparation of fine-grained monoclinic zirconia ceramics by colloidal processing

Fine-grained monoclinic zirconia ceramic was made from well-dispersed zirconia sol prepared by the hydrolysis of zirconium chloride oxide octahydrate. Dechlorinated and concentrated zirconia sol was consolidated by pressure filtration. The relative green density of the compact was improved by the following cold isostatic pressing treatment at 400 MPa. The compact was densified by pressureless sintering to >98% of theoretical density in air at 1100 °C, which is lower than that of monoclinic to tetragonal transformation of pure zirconia. The average grain size of the sintered monoclinic zirconia ceramics was 92 nm.

ABSTRACTFabrication of fine-grained monoclinic zirconia ceramics has been attempted from acid and neutral zirconia sols, which have been prepared by different methods. Complete re-dispersion of flocculated particles for the neutral sol is impossible even by changing its pH, while no flocculation is observed for the acid sol. Chloride ions, which are inevitably present in the acid sol, are removed effectively by using anion exchange resin. Consolidation of the sols is performed by the pressure filtration method at 10 MPa, followed by CIP treatment at 400 MPa. It is possible to densify the compacts from both sols to >98% of theoretical density by pressureless sintering in air at 1100 °C. This temperature is lower than that for the monoclinic to tetragonal transformation of pure zirconia. Fine and homogenous-grained microstructures, which have an average grain size of 92 nm, are observed for monoclinic zirconia fabricated from the acid sol. However, more coarse and heterogeneous microstructures are observed for the compact fabricated from the neutral sol.

Zirconia nanopowders (stabilized by 1.5 and 3 mol% Y2O3) with particle size below 10 nm were compacted by cold isostatic pressing. Pressureless sintering and hot isostatic pressing were applied to obtain dense nanocrystalline ceramics. The influence of the pore size in powder compacts on sintering behaviour was investigated. Green bodies pressed at 1000 MPa had a maximum pore size of 5 nm. These bodies were densified to a relative density of over 99.6% with an average grain size about 85 nm by pressureless sintering at 1100 °C. Indentation techniques were used to evaluate the hardness and fracture toughness of zirconia nanoceramics. The decrease in the yttria content from 3 to 1.5 mol% resulted in the toughness increasing from 5.3 to 11.1 MPa m1/2. The differences in fracture toughness of zirconia ceramics prepared with different yttria contents and by different sintering methods were discussed and their possible causes were proposed.

LiNiO2 thin films for the application of cathode of the rechargeable battery were fabricated by Li ion diffusion on the surface oxidized NiO layer. Bi-axially textured Ni-tapes with 50 ~ 80 μm thickness were fabricated using cold rolling and annealing of Ni-rod prepared by cold isostatic pressing of Ni powder. Surface oxidation of Ni-tapes were conducted using tube furnace or line-focused infrared heater at 700 °C for 150 sec in flowing oxygen atmosphere, resulted in NiO layer with thickness of 400 and 800 μm, respectively. After Li was deposited on the NiO layer by thermal evaporation, LiNiO2 was formed by Li diffusion through the NiO layer during subsequent heat treatment using IR heater with various heat treatment conditions. IR-heating resulted in the smoother surface and finer grain size of NiO and LiNiO2 layer compared to the tube-furnace heating. The average grain size of LiNiO2 layer was 0.5~1 μm, which is much smaller than that of sol-gel processed LiNiO2. The reacted LiNiO2 region showed homogeneous composition throughout the thickness and did not show any noticeable defects frequently found in the solid state reacted LiNiO2, but crack and delamination between the reacted LiNiO2 and Ni occurred as the reaction time increased above 4hrs.

The present work deals with adjusting a fine-grained microstructure in iron-rich iron-aluminium alloys using the ECAP-process (Equal Channel Angular Pressing). Due to the limited formability of Fe-Al alloys with increased aluminium content, high forming temperatures and low forming speeds are required. Therefore, tool temperatures above 1100 °C are permanently needed to prevent cooling of the work pieces, which makes the design of the ECAP-process challenging. For the investigation, the Fe-Al work pieces were heated to the respective hot forming temperature in a chamber furnace and then formed in the ECAP tool at a constant punch speed of 5 mm/s. Besides the chemical composition (Fe9Al, Fe28Al and Fe38Al (at.%—Al)), the influences of a subsequent heat treatment and the holding time on the microstructure development were investigated. For this purpose, the average grain size of the microstructure was measured using the AGI (Average Grain Intercept) method and correlated with the aforementioned parameters. The results show that no significant grain refinement could be achieved with the parameters used, which is largely due to the high forming temperature significantly promoting grain growth. The holding times in the examined area do not have any influence on the grain refinement.

Ultra-fine grained steel (UFGS) with an average grain size of less than 1μm has been developed and is expected to demonstrate superior properties. However, its welded heat-affected zone, HAZ, substantially affecting the strength of a welded joint, will be easily softened after welding. Therefore, minimization of UFGS’s HAZ size during laser welding was carried out using the cooling conductor liquid nitrogen. It was found that a shielding gas with adequate flow rate for the liquid nitrogen depth was used to displace nitrogen on the area of laser beam irradiation to stabilize the weld bead. Also, because YAG laser system was mainly used because it has a lower laser induced plasma or plume temperature, which results in a decreased occurrence of pit and blowhole. HAZ size minimization strongly depends on the initial plate temperature. Reduced initial plate temperature shrinks the specific heated temperature range in which softening occurs. However, due possibly to decreasing thermal conductivity under room temperature, which prevents heat removal, the benefit of reducing the initial plate temperature is limited. The optimal initial temperature to minimize the HAZ size, in the present work, was found to be 123K.

In this paper, using ZrO2 and Ca (NO3)•4H2O as raw materials, we prepared a series of calica stabilized zirconia (CSZ) ceramics by pressureless sintering method. The results show that the relative densities of all sintered samples are above 90%, and the sintered samples are composed of cubic, tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2, and the main phase is cubic ZrO2 and tetragonal ZrO2. The content of cubic phase increases with the increase of sintering temperature and adding CaO content. The grain size of the sintered samples is relatively uniform and some pores exist. Increasing the additive amount of CaO, the conductivity first rises and then decreases, and the conductivity value of the sample containing 5wt% CaO is the maximum. When the sintering temperature is up to 1600 oC, the conductivity of the sample containing 5wt% CaO is up to 0.016S•cm-1 at 800 oC. Furthermore, the conductivity of sintered samples is increasing with the increase of test temperature according to the Arrhenius equation.

The fine-grained rolling steels NFG600 and the conventional usual rolling steels SM490 were processed by sand paper polishing and mechanical grinding to compare the residual stress generated after processing. The average grain size of NFG600 and SM490 is 3 μm and 15μm respectively. Therefore improvement of mechanical properties for such fine-grained steels is expected, it is important to understand the residual stress state of new fine-grained materials with processing. In this study, multi axial stresses of two kinds of specimens after polishing and grinding were measured by three kinds of analysis methods including cos-ψ method. As a result, as for σ33, the stress of NFG was compression, though that of SM490 was tension.

Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 443 K was used to introduce an ultra-fine grained (UFG) microstructure to a Zr and Sc modified 7075 aluminum alloy. Using the methods of TEM and EBSD, an average grain size of 0.6 1m was recorded after the pressing. The UFG microstructure remained very stable up to the temperature of 723 K, where the material exhibited high strain rate superplasticity (HSRSP) with elongations to failure of 610 % and 410 % at initial strain rates of 6.4 x 10-2 s-1 and 1 x 10-1 s-1, respectively. A strain rate sensitivity parameter m in the vicinity of 0.45 was observed at temperatures as high as 773 K. At this temperature, the material still reached an elongation to failure of 430 % at 2 x 10-2 s-1. These results confirm the stabilizing effect of the Zr and Sc additions on the UFG microstructure in a 7XXX series aluminum alloy produced by severe plastic deformation.
