ABSTRACTWe have studied Cu2S absorber layers prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) by calibrated spectral photoluminescence (PL) and by confocal PL as function of temperature T and excitation fluxes to obtain the absolute PL-yield at an excitation flux equivalent to the AM1.5 spectrum and to calculate the splitting of the quasi-Fermi levels (QFL) µ = Ef,n-Ef,p and the absorption coefficient α(E), both in the temperature range 20 K ≤ T ≤ 400 K. The PL-spectra reveal two peaks at E1 = 1.17 eV and E2 = 1.3 eV, of which the low energy peak is only detectable at temperatures T < 200 K. The samples show an impressive QFL-splitting of µ > 700 meV at 300 K associated with a pseudo band gap of Eg = 1.25 eV. The high energy peak shows an unexpected temperature behavior, namely an increase of the PL-yield with rising temperature at variance with the behavior of QFL-splitting that decreases with rising T from extrapolated T = 0K value of µ = 1.3 eV. The PL-yield versus temperature will be discussed in terms of different defect states in the band gap. Our observations indicate that, contrary to common believe, it is not the PL-yield, but rather the QFL-splitting that is the comprehensive indicator of the quality of the excited state in an illuminated semiconductor. A further examination of the lateral variation of the opto-electronic properties by confocal PL shows a strong correlation between the QFL-splitting, the Urbach energy EU and the optical band gap Eopt, respectively.

AbstractDevice performance in CdTe/CdS solar cells is critically linked to the quality of the back contact. In this paper we report on a phenomenon wherein application of the back contact significantly alters the electro-optical properties of the absorber near the junction. We have studied the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the near-junction CdTe region in CdTe/CdS solar cells before and after contact application. It is found that the elemental Tellurium layer formed on the CdTe surface by the standard nitric-phosphoric etch process results in a dramatic qualitative change in the junction PL spectrum. Prior to NP etch, the spectrum has two peaks at energies of 1.50 eV and 1.45 eV, corresponding to recombination in bulk CdTe, and in a CdTeS alloy with 9% sulfur content, respectively. After NP etch, the relative intensity of the low-energy peak is reduced, and the peak shifts towards higher energy. These changes are consistent with a model of increased band-bending at the grain boundaries near the CdTe/CdS heterojunction.

Widely used to improve the lifespan of tools, Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating process yields hard coating film by creating high-energy beam of coating particles or plasma ions. The quality of the coat is largely depended on its evenness, which is achieved solely by the know-how and experience of coating companies. In dealing with a large, unfamiliar-shape workpiece, coating companies need a logical way to determine the optimal placement of the workpiece in the PVD oven. This work presents the improvement of placement angle optimization for a five-degrees-of-freedom jig fixture with self-rotation. The sensitivity of errors in the physical placement is found to be small.

AbstractIn this paper, we present experimental results of photoluminescence for series of InAs:Si heavily doped samples, with doping level varying from 1.6 × 1016 cm-3 to 2.93 × 1018 cm-3. All samples were grown using MBE system equipped with a valved arsenic cracker. The measurements were performed in the temperature range of 20 K to 100 K. Although the Mott transition in InAs appears for electron concentrations above 1014 cm-3, Burstein-Moss broadening of photoluminescence spectra presented in this article was observed only for samples with concentration higher than 2 × 1017 cm-3. For the samples with lower concentrations two peaks were observed, arising from the band gap and defect states. The intensity of the defect peak was found to be decreasing with increasing temperature as well as increasing concentration, up to the point of disappearance when the Burstein-Moss broadening was visible.

Interest in ceramics as thermal barrier coatings for hot components of turbine engines has increased rapidly over the last decade. The primary reason for this is the significant reduction in heat load and increased chemical inertness against corrosive species with the ceramic coating materials. Among other candidates, partially-stabilized zirconia is the focus of attention mainly because ot its low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion coefficient. The coatings were made by Garrett Turbine Engine Company. Ni-base super-alloy was used as the substrate and later a bond-coating with high Al activity was formed over it. The ceramic coatings, with a thickness of about 50 μm, were formed by EB-PVD in a high-vacuum chamber by heating the target material (ZrO2-20 w/0 Y2O3) above its evaporation temperaturef >3500 °C) with a high-energy beam and condensing the resulting vapor onto a rotating heated substrate. A heat treatment in an oxidizing environment was performed later on to form a protective oxide layer to improve the adhesion between the ceramic coating and substrate. Bulk samples were studied by utilizing a Scintag diffractometer and a JEOL JXA-840 SEM; examinations of cross-sectional thin-films of the interface region were performed in a Philips CM 30 TEM operating at 300 kV and for chemical analysis a KEVEX X-ray spectrometer (EDS) was used.

AbstractAg50Cu50 films were deposited on glass substrates by a sputtering system. Effects of accumulated energy on nanoparticle formation in pulse-laser dewetting of AgCu films were investigated. The results showed that the properties of the dewetted films were found to be dependent on the magnitude of the energy accumulated in the film. For a low energy accumulation, the two distinct nanoparticles had rice-shaped/Ag60Cu40 and hemispherical/Ag80Cu20. Moreover, the absorption spectra contained two peaks at 700 nm and 500 nm, respectively. By contrast, for a high energy accumulation, the nanoparticles had a consistent composition of Ag60Cu40, a mean diameter of 100 nm and a peak absorption wavelength of 550 nm. Overall, the results suggest that a higher Ag content of the induced nanoparticles causes a blue shift of the absorption spectrum, while a smaller particle size induces a red shift.

Titanium nitride coatings were grown in a physical vapor deposition system assisted by a direct current reactive magnetron sputtering technique. The vacuum chamber was evacuated with a mechanical pump and cryopump to a base pressure of 10-7 Torr. The Sputtering was performed with a direct current high voltage source (0-1 Kev and 1 A) on a titanium target (99.98% purity). The titanium target was sputtered with a high purity argon -nitrogen mixture. The films were deposited on monocrystalline silicon (mc-Si) (111) substrates at different nitrogen partial pressures from 0.08 mTorr to 1.5 mTorr. Total pressure, power applied to target and substrate temperature were keep constant in all the experiments.EXEELFS analysis were done using the standard procedure [1,2]. In this case, we are find that the atomic concentration is in good agreement with the respective established stoichioinetry N/T=0.99. Figure 1 shows the window of high energy loss where appears their respective N K-edge and Ti -L23.

The optical absorption spectra of blended poly (N-carbazole) (PVK) with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in various compositions are investigated. A doctor blade technique was used to coat the blended polymer on a quartz substrate. The electronic parameters such as absorption edge (Ee), allowed direct band gap (Ed), allowed indirect band gap (Ei), Urbach edge (Eu) and steepness parameter (γ) were calculated using Tauc/Davis-Mott Model. The results reveal that the Ee, Ed and Ei increase with increasing of PVP ratio. There also have variation changing in Urbach energy and steepness parameter.

Head and neck cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), are the sixth most common malignancies worldwide. OSCC frequently leads to oral dysfunction, which worsens a patient’s quality of life. Moreover, its prognosis remains poor. Unlike normal cells, tumor cells preferentially metabolize glucose by aerobic glycolysis. Pyruvate kinase (PK) catalyzes the final step in glycolysis, and the transition from PKM1 to PKM2 is observed in many cancer cells. However, little is known about PKM expression and function in OSCC. In this study, we investigated the expression of PKM in OSCC specimens and performed a functional analysis of human OSCC cells. We found that the PKM2/PKM1 ratio was higher in OSCC cells than in adjacent normal mucosal cells and in samples obtained from dysplasia patients. Furthermore, PKM2 expression was strongly correlated with OSCC tumor progression on immunohistochemistry. PKM2 expression was higher during cell growth, invasion, and apoptosis in HSC3 cells, which show a high energy flow and whose metabolism depends on aerobic glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. PKM2 expression was also associated with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and integration of glutamine into lactate. Our results suggested that PKM2 has a variety of tumor progressive functions in OSCC cells.

Animal feed should ideally be inexpensive and not competing with humans. Ampas know is a waste of the manufacture of tofu that contains protein and high energy. Its use has problems due to the existence of antinutrient and cannot be kept long. Lactobacillus Plantarum is a lactic acid (Gram-positive) bacteria used in the fermentation process to improve the quality of feed. The goal of fermentation is to remove the anti-nutrients that exist in the tofu pulp and increase the content of Isoflavone (Daidzin, Glycitein, and Genistein) and Isoflavone is a source of antioxidants important to growth. The study uses a Completely Randomized Design with 5 treatment of microbial culture concentrations of 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (V/w), respectively repeated 3 times. The result of analyzes in the pulp of tofu fermentation suggests that fermentation by Lactobacillus Plantarum can increase the content of Daidzein, Glycitein, and genistein with the highest value resulting from the use of L. Plantarum 20% respectively 191.21 + 24.9 μg/g, 85.96 μg/g, and 120.82 μg/g. It can be concluded that the higher the use of the concentration of L. Plantarum in tofu pulp can increase the levels of isoflavone, so it is advisable to conduct research with the concentration of L. Plantarum higher in tofu pulp
