ABSTRACTThe mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are governed by the relationships between the matrix, the interface material, and the fibers. In non-oxide matrix systems the use of compliant pyrolytic carbon or BN have been demonstrated to be effective interface materials, allowing for absorption of mismatch stresses between fiber and matrix and offering a poorly bonded interface for crack deflection. The resulting materials have demonstrated remarkable strain/damage tolerance together with high strength. Carbon or BN, however, suffer from oxidative loss in many service environments, and thus there is a major search for oxidation resistant alternatives. This paper will review the issues related to developing a stable and effective interface material for non-oxide matrix CMCs.

This paper highlights research that is addressing the need for improved high-temperature-capable CMCs, with a focus on CMC constituents and an understanding of their processing, microstructure, and behavior in relevant service environments. The most pervasive lifetime and temperature limitations for SiC/SiC CMCs are related to oxidation, creep and stress rupture of the fibers, oxidation-induced instability of the fibermatrix interface, and instability of the matrix at temperatures > 1400°C. Consequently, we are addressing these shortcomings by developing technologies to enable higher-temperature capable SiC fiber, oxidation-resistant fiber-matrix interfaces, and improvements in processing of refractory matrices for both turbine engine and hypersonic applications.

Experiments have been performed which indicate the potential of metal-fiber reinforced-ceramic matrix composites for use as a high temperature structural matrix. The results of this work reveal that metal-fiber reinforced ceramics obey compostie theory, and that after cracks occur in the matrix, a pseudo-ductility can be introduced into the composite. This toughness can be predicted from equations of work required to pull the fibers through the matrix. The relationship between strength, toughness, and crack depths, are dependent on the inter-facial bond between the fibers and matrix as well as fiber diameter and length. Based on the results of these experiments, multicomponent materials with superior resistance to failure from oxidation, thermal shock, and high mechanical stresses in air above 2400 F can be postulated. These materials have potential for use as gas turbine engine vanes.

AbstractIn this paper, the temperature-dependent matrix multicracking evolution of carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic-matrix composites (C/SiC CMCs) is investigated. The temperature-dependent composite microstress field is obtained by combining the shear-lag model and temperature-dependent material properties and damage models. The critical matrix strain energy criterion assumes that the strain energy in the matrix has a critical value. With increasing applied stress, when the matrix strain energy is higher than the critical value, more matrix cracks and interface debonding occur to dissipate the additional energy. Based on the composite damage state, the temperature-dependent matrix strain energy and its critical value are obtained. The relationships among applied stress, matrix cracking state, interface damage state, and environmental temperature are established. The effects of interfacial properties, material properties, and environmental temperature on temperature-dependent matrix multiple fracture evolution of C/SiC composites are analyzed. The experimental evolution of matrix multiple fracture and fraction of the interface debonding of C/SiC composites at elevated temperatures are predicted. When the interface shear stress increases, the debonding resistance at the interface increases, leading to the decrease of the debonding fraction at the interface, and the stress transfer capacity between the fiber and the matrix increases, leading to the higher first matrix cracking stress, saturation matrix cracking stress, and saturation matrix cracking density.

This initial behavior is characterized by linear elastic properties, which are anisotropic due to the orientation and arrangement of fibers in the matrix. The linear elastic properties are needed during various phases of analysis and design of CMC components. CMCs are typically made with ceramic unidirectional or woven fiber preforms embedded in a ceramic matrix formed via various processing routes. The matrix processing of interest in this work is that formed via Polymer Impregnation and Pyrolysis (PIP). As this process involves pyrolysis process to convert a pre-ceramic polymer into ceramic, considerable volume shrinkage occurs in the material. This volume shrinkage leads to significant defects in the final material in the forms of porosity of various size, shape, and volume fraction. These defect structures can have a significant impact on the elastic and damage response of the material. In this paper, we develop a new micromechanics modeling framework to study the effects of processing-induced defects on linear elastic response of a PIP-derived CMC. A combination of analytical and computational micromechanics approaches is used to derive the overall elastic tensor of the CMC as a function of the underlying constituents and/or defect structures. It is shown that the volume fraction and aspect ratio of porosity at various length-scales plays an important role in accurate prediction of the elastic tensor. Specifically, it is shown that the through-thickness elastic tensor components cannot be predicted accurately using the micromechanics models unless the effects of defects are considered.

In this paper, the stress-dependent matrix multiple fracture in silicon carbide fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites with different fiber preforms is investigated. The critical matrix strain energy criterion is used to determine the matrix multiple fracture considering the interface debonding. The effects of the fiber radius, fiber elastic modulus, matrix elastic modulus, fiber volume, interface shear stress, and interface debonded energy on the matrix multiple fracture and the interface debonding are analyzed. The experimental matrix multiple cracking and interface debonding of minicomposite, unidirectional, and two-dimensional woven SiC/SiC composites with different fiber volumes and interphases are predicted. The matrix cracking density increases with the increasing of the fiber volume, fiber elastic modulus, interface shear stress, and interface debonded energy, and the decreasing of the fiber radius and matrix elastic modulus.

Nondestructive characterization (NDC) methods which can provide full field information about components prior to and during use are critical to the reliable application of continuous fiber ceramic matrix composites in high firing temperature (>1350°C) gas turbines. For combustor liner applications, although nonmechanical load bearing components, thermal characteristics as well as mechanical integrity is vitally important. NDC methods being developed to provide necessary information include x-ray computed tomography (mainly for through-wall density and delamination detection), infrared-based thermal diffusivity imaging, and single-wall through-transmission x-ray imaging (mainly for fiber content and alignment detection). Correlation of the data obtained from NDC methods with subscale combustor liner tests have shown positive results at thermal cycling temperatures from 700°C to 1177°C.

Advanced braking devices can represent a promising application for ceramic matrix composites (CMC) with functional and structural properties. If the actual advanced braking materials could be at least partially replaced by CMCs, it might become the first consumer market for these materials. CMC containing three main phases, silicon carbide, graphite and carbon fibers were prepared. A systematic analysis of the processing-structure-properties relationship of the composite is carried out. In particular, silicon carbide provides the necessary hardness, whereas graphite is used for its lubricating properties, and carbon fibers are used as reinforcement. The samples, prepared using a reactive bonding technique, exhibited adequate mechanical properties, high resistance to thermal shocks and good stability after many thermal cycles. Morphological and structural investigations have been performed to optimize the content of each component. Preliminary tribological investigations are presented.

Whisker-reinforced ceramic matrix composites have recently received a great deal of attention for applications as high temperature structural materials in, for example, advanced heat engines and high temperature energy conversion systems. For applications requiring mechanical reliability, the improvements that can be realized in fracture strength and fracture toughness are of great interest. Of particular importance for optimizing the mechanical reliability of these composites is the effect of the whisker/matrix interfacial characteristics on the strengthening and toughening mechanisms. Whisker reinforcements are primarily utilized to prevent catastrophic brittle failure by providing processes that dissipate energy during crack propagation. The degree of energy dissipation depends on the nature of the whisker/matrix interface, which can be controlled largely by the matrix chemistry, the whisker surface chemistry, and the processing parameters.It is generally believed that a strong interfacial bond results in a composite exhibiting brittle behavior. These composites usually have good fracture strengths but low fracture toughnesses. If the interfacial bond is weak, the composite will not fail in a catastrophic manner due to the activation of various energy dissipation processes. These latter composites tend to have high fracture toughnesses and low fracture strengths. Generally, the interface should be strong enough to transfer the load from the matrix to the whiskers, but weak enough to fail preferentially prior to failure. Thus, local damage occurs without catastrophic failure. It is therefore necessary to control the interfacial chemistry and bonding in order to optimize the overall mechanical performance of the composites.
