Sixty percents of all students reached the learning outcomes in critical reaading. Furthermore, in the second one, after carrying out a deep analysis and remedial teaching, eighty percents of them reached the learning outcome in critical reaading. It means that almost all college students’ critical reading skill increased significantly. Thus, the implementation of padlet application in fostering students’ critical reading skill is effective with the result showing significant difference, compared with that of the first cycle. Keywords: action research, critical reading, padlet application.

This paper describes the process English as a foreign language university students and their teacher underwent when engaging in critical literacy practices. Interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, students’ artifacts, and the teacher’s journal were used to collect data in this study. Findings suggest that when students engage in critical literacy practices, they are prone to reflect on the power they have as agents of social change, while developing language skills. However, teachers should be ready to encounter some resistance from students and to struggle with the incorporation of critical perspectives in their lessons, which is understandable considering the emphasis grammar mastering has traditionally had on language teaching and learning.

Reading skill is one of the aspects of the foreign language which need to be master by the students. Thus it needed an appropriate method to improve the students' reading skills, especially reading comprehension. Therefore, the researchers conducted the study by using the Direct Method to improve reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the Direct Method by using games can improve the students' reading comprehension. The sample was taken from the second-year students of MAN Sibreh consisted of 25 students. The experiment was conducted in four meetings. In collecting the data, this study used pre-test and post-test as the research instruments. The pre-test was given in the first meeting while the post-test was given in the last meeting. After analyzing the data, the obtained t-score is 3,92. It indicates that there are significant differences between pre-test and post-test. Moreover, the critical value of t for the degree of freedom was 2,06 at the level significance of 5% (0,05). Thus, the t-score (3,92) is higher than the t-table (2,06). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted.

The research is conducted to prove a correlation between vocabulary and sentence structure mastery towards reading comprehension of private university students. The methodology used in this research is a survey of regression and correlation analysis which relates between the data and correlation between vocabulary and sentence structure mastery towards students’ reading comprehension.  The research uses three variables, two independent variables (vocabulary and sentence structure mastery), and one dependent variable (reading comprehension). The data is collected by using vocabulary, sentence structure and reading tests. The research found that: 1) There is a significant correlation between vocabulary and sentence structure mastery towards students’ reading comprehension, proven by the result of Sig. 0.000 < 0.05 and F-test = 15.011. 2). There is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery towards students’ reading comprehension, proven by the result of Sig. 0.008 < 0.05 and   t-test = 2.744. 3). There is a significant correlation between sentence structure mastery towards students’ reading comprehension, proven by the result of Sig. 0.011 < 0.05 and t-test = 2.617.

This explorative-descriptive study set out to examine the equivalence among Test of English Proficiency (TOEP) forms, developed by the Indonesian Testing Service Centre (ITSC) and co-founded by The Association for The Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) and The Association of Psychology in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, the researchers collected the data through documenting the responses of those taking TOEP in 2016 and 2017, involving six TOEP forms in 2016 and four TOEP forms in 2017. All the forms were developed using the same test grid and construct to measure the listening and reading skills. The equality among the six forms was tested using the equating technique, which involved (1) the estimation of the item parameter using the Rasch model, (2) examination of the test characteristics curve for each form, and (3) interpretation of results. The results showed that all the TOEP forms used in 2016 and 2017 were equal with one another. It can be concluded then that the developed TOEP forms have the same level of difficulty and ensure justice for all test takers.

The purpose of the descriptive study is to explore the English as a foreign language second-semester students’ writing anxiety. The students were from a private university in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. A total of 92 students who were selected randomly filled the writing anxiety questionnaire. The writing anxiety questionnaire reports that 53.26 % (n= 49) of the students experienced low writing anxiety and 46.74% (n= 43) of the students experienced high writing anxiety. In terms of the components of writing anxiety, the students experienced anxiety in the component of evaluation (mean score of 19.86), product (mean score of 19.25), and stress (mean score of 16.52). This study also has shown that writing anxiety caused by stress can be considered less frequent anxiety component that has been experienced by the students. It is suggested that students should learn to manage their problems that are related to writing. To do so, the lecturer should guide the students to help them to reduce their writing anxiety and help improve the students’ writing skills.

The study attempted to design reading materials for Medical Science at one of Vocational High Schools Medical Science in Serang. To produce satisfactory teaching materials, the researchers did the following steps: doing needs analysis, reviewing the principles of materials design and reading in a foreign language, designing course framework, designing syllabus, designing the reading materials, and implementing the sample lessons. The researchers employed qualitative methods in gathering the data. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was addressed to students, alumni, teachers and institution. The interview was collected from the companies or users that have ever recruited the graduated students.
