This study aimed to investigate communication strategies (CSs) used by EFL students in improving speaking English. Methods employed were questionnaire, observation, and interview. Findings showed that students have improvement in speaking when they used communication strategies (CSs). The strategies used by the students such as non-linguistic means, appeal for help, and fillers or hesitation device, message abandonment, non-linguistic means, literal translation, code switching, appeal for help, and fillers or hesitation device. The study suggests that EFL practitioners pay attention to communication strategies (CSs) aspect to obtain the optimum results of teaching-learning processes.

Self-assessment is one of alternative ways to evaluate students’ speaking talent in English. Through this evaluation, students are allowed to discover, know, and develop their speaking skill. Nonetheless, this sort of project was probably not common in Indonesia. Thus, this study was aimed to know students’ perception of using self-assessment for assessing their oral performance at Link and Match vocational high school. The information of this study was gathered by means of questionnaire which consists of 5 questions about the use of self-assessment. In this qualitative study, the data had been analyzed descriptively. There have been 30 vocational high school students who stand in Multimedia Major as the participant of this study. The results of this study indicated that most of the students thought that self-assessment very helpful for them because it allowed them to know their functionality and develop it to achieve the course goal specifically the speaking course objective. However, some students though that self-assessment was considerably useful since the teacher not often use this assignment and the students not take pleasure in whereas attempting to assess themselves. Self-assessment is very useful in exploring and assessing students speaking skill.

<span>This study aimed at investigating the influence of language proficiency level on the frequency of the use and choice of L1/L2 communication strategies used by Iraqi EFL students. This study was qualitative in nature. The interactive task and speaking task were used to gather data regarding communication strategy use and choice from<em> </em>52 second and third year English major students. Those participants were divided into two groups; low and high proficient students (n=27 low proficient students and n=25 high proficient students). A taxonomy of communication strategies was adopted to code the communication strategies used by low and high proficient Iraqi EFL students. The results revealed that low proficient students use communication strategies more frequently than high proficient students. Both low and high proficient students used communication strategies other than those included in selected taxonomy. This study showed that low proficient students use L1-based strategies more frequently, while high proficient students use L2-based strategies more frequently.</span>

This study investigates the probable relationship between Iranian EFL learners' self-perception and assertiveness and their oral communication skills. A sample of 80 male and female Iranian EFL students participated in this study. The participants were initially required to complete Belbin's self-perception questionnaire, they were then asked to complete Oral Communication Strategies Inventory (OCSI). The results of the data analysis indicated that there was a strong positive correlation between the two variables and thus the higher the level of self-perception and assertiveness, the higher the level of communication will be. Keywords: Communication Strategies, Self-perception, Assertiveness.

The current advancement of video-blogs (vlogs) in YouTube channel among students of generation z has challenged teachers to make use of its potential for students’ speaking enhancement. The present research aimed at elaborating the implementation of educational vlogs as well as lecturers’ and students’ perceptions in response to the use and the creation of educational vlogs to enhance their speaking proficiency and reduce their speaking hesitancy. The research piloted to university students who attended speaking for beginner course in Lamongan. This is mixed-method research employed 27 students who were purposefully selected as the sample based on their speaking proficiency level (good, average and less than average). The instruments obtained in data collection were notes of observation, students speaking scores, questionnaires, and interview guidance that were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study indicated that integrating vlogs to speaking classroom has positive feedback from both lecturers and students. Therefore, it is suggested to make use of the vlogs toward another classroom in different circumstances and skills.   Keywords: Technology integration, vlogs, speaking for beginner, speaking skill

AbstractProficiency in English academic speaking is considered to be important in EFL student. And the authentic material has been used to improve the students’ speaking skill. This study aimed to discuss the perception of EFL students on the importance of the academic speaking in their current study and the use of authentic materials in their classroom. The study investigates the students’ needs which are emerging in academic speaking during the classroom practice for gaining the perceptive and thoughtful understanding for the forthcoming course’s needs. The data for the current study has been collected by using the five scaled questionnaire of the needs analysis that was distributed among the fifty EFL undergraduate students and focus interview groups which involved fourty participants were also used to collect the data. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that the resources for authentic materials are considered needed.Key words: English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Authentic Material, Academic Speaking Skill

This study concerned with the teacher�s strategies in learning speaking English. This research is focused on how the teacher overcomes the students� weaknesses in learning speaking English when implementing Time Token Arends method. By using a descriptive qualitative research within a teacher of MA Al-Bairuny as a subject of its research found that: (1) the student had difficulty in inhibition such as: difficulty in starting to speak because of being worried of making mistakes, difficulty in answering the question from the teacher, and they felt nervous and shy to speak in front of the class. (1) The teacher used �Look in the Face� strategy to overcome the difficulties; (2) the teacher used �Communication� strategies to overcome the students� difficulties in nothing to say, such as: students had no idea to speak, student got difficulty to express what he wanted to speak, and student had no bravery to express their thought; (3) the teacher used �Interdependence� strategies to overcome the students� difficulties in un-event participant; (4) the teacher used �Responsibility� strategies to overcome students� difficulties in mother tongue used, such as: students felt easier for communication each other using Java Language, so they ignored the teacher�s instruction for speaking English; (5) then, after the learning process, teacher made a schedule for this group to evaluate their teamwork process in order to give them motivation and evaluation. Thus, the students� improvement on their speaking skill has been the aim of the research.

Abstract. Speaking skill is essential in language learning and teaching process because the goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate using the target language. Fluency is one of the leading criteria that the students should accomplish in speaking skill. However, most of EFL students tend to be more nervous if they speak English, and this will impact their fluency. The objective of the research is to investigate how questioning gives an impact for students’ fluency in academic speaking class. The researchers used narrative inquiry to collect and process the data using Photovoice. The participants of this research were 12 university students. The finding shows that the use of questioning can develop students’ speaking fluency in academic speaking class. As the implication, teachers can give questions followed with feedback to enhance the students’ fluency. Keywords: fluency, speaking skill, questioning, photovoice.

Based on preliminary observation most students feel hesitate to continue English conversation when they lacked of vocabularies and structured grammatical sentences. The students prefer to stop speaking. Therefore they need strategies to keep the communication on. Dealing with the problems, the present study investigates the lexical and grammatical communication problems that can be managed by communication strategies. An observation was done to 60 students in different levels of proficiency. it was revealed that there was a significant difference in the frequency and percentage of learners’ solved lexical problems (72.2 %) and grammatical problems (27.8%). The results drawn from these items were that EFL students used communication strategies on lexical problems are more frequent than used communication strategies on grammatical problems. This strategy is one small step towards clarifying the balanced of using communication strategy on lexical and grammatical problems in communication.
