Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Objectives: Thus, this study aimed to assess the epidemiological profile of a patient sample that underwent spinal surgery regarding their nutritional and vitamin D status. Methods: Serum albumin and vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) levels were measured in patients with different spinal surgical approaches and various pathologies at a single institution. 112 patients were retrospectively identified for inclusion and stratified by age into 4 age groups and by pathology. The nutritional status of the patients was classified in vitamin D inadequacy (< 30ng/mL), vitamin D deficiency (<20ng/mL), and hypoalbuminemia (<3.5g/dL). Data was analyzed comparing vitamin D, and albumin means considering gender, age group, and pathologies. Results: Twenty-eight (25.2%) patients had hypoalbuminemia. There was no difference between gender (p = 0.988); there was a significant decrease in albumin concentration increasing the age (p < 0.001). The prevalence of hypoalbuminemia was significantly higher in patients with trauma, tumor and infection than in those patients with degenerative and deformity diseases (p = 0.003). The prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy was 33.7%, and that of deficiency was 62.2%, while severe deficiency (< 10 ng/mL) in 16.3%. The vitamin D concentration was significantly different among the pathologies (P = 0.047), the lower concentration occurring in patients with tumor. Conclusion: Older patients, as well as patients with tumor and infectious pathologies, seem to have a higher prevalence of hypoalbuminemia, inferring malnutrition. There was a low epidemic level of vitamin D concentration, almost all patients presenting some degree of hypovitaminosis D, independent of age, gender and nutritional status.

AbstractIntroduction The epidemiological profile is considered a sensitive indicator of living conditions and the disease process. The musculoskeletal disorders are the most common causes of pain and can lead to disability or restriction of daily activities. These disorders take the name of RCT/OWRD when they are associated with work activities and may be associated with risk conditions at work. Objectives To describe the epidemiological profile of supermarket workers with musculoskeletal disorders under treatment at a physiotherapy clinic in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Methods This was a cross-sectional, observational study which used retrospective data collected from 360 records of patients treated from January 2010 to December 2011 in a physiotherapy clinic that provides health services for a supermarket chain. Results There was a predominance of females (73.9%), aged 30–39 years (35.1%); 63.0% reported being single and 73.4% lived in Porto Alegre. The most commonly reported occupation was cashier (31.2%). The main reasons for referral to physiotherapy treatment were low back pain (21.4%), neck pain (19.7%), pain (16.1%), subacromial bursitis (13.9%) and back pain (12.2%). Among the signs and symptoms 95.8% of the sample reported pain in chronic phase. Conclusion The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was high in this group. The presence of pain can disable the worker for daily activities and physiotherapy becomes the therapeutic procedure of choice for their rehabilitation.

SUMMARYRationaleGastrointestinal fistulas (GIF) represent a severe and potentially lethal complication of the hospital surgical activity. However, evidences are lacking about prognosis and outcomes of GIF in Latin America (LATAM) hospitals.ObjectiveTo describe the prognosis and outcomes GIF in LATAM hospitals.Study designProspective, longitudinal, cohort-type study. The cohort fostered three cross-sectional examinations: First examination: On admission of the patient in the study; Second examination: Thirty days later; and Third (and last) examination: Sixty days after patient’s admission.Study serieOne hundred seventy-seven patients (Males: 58.2 %; Average age: 51.0 ± 16.7 years; Ages ≥ 60 years: 36.2 %) diagnosed with, and assisted for, GIF (ECF: Enterocutaneous: 64.9 % vs. EAF: Enteroathmospheric: 35.1 %) in 76 LATAM hospitals (13 countries) and Europe (4).MethodsCondition (Alive vs. Deceased) and hospital status (Hospitalized vs. Discharged) of the patient, and the GFI patency (Closed vs. Non closed) were recorded in each of the cohort’s examination. Indicators of GFI prognosis thus constructed were correlated demographical, sanitary, surgical and nutritional characteristics of the patientsResultsOn conclusion of the study indicators of GIF prognosis behaved as follows: Mortality:14.7 %; Prolonged hospitalization: 47.4 %; Spontaneous closure of GIF: 36.2 %. Type of GIF influenced upon patient’s survival: ECF: 87.0 % vs. EAF: 82.3 % (Δ = +4.7 %; χ2 = 6.787; p < 0.05). In each examination of the cohort, the number of surviving subjects was always greater among those with ECF: After 30 days: ECF: 92.1 % vs. EAF: 83.9 % (Δ = +8.2 %); After 60 days: ECF: 98.1 % vs. EAF: 90.4 % (Δ = +7.7 %; χ2 = 13.764; p < 0.05). On the other hand, hospital stay was prolonged in the subjects of elective surgery (Elective surgery: 61.4 % vs. Emergency surgery: 38.3 % (Δ = +23.1 %; χ2 = 9.064; p < 0.05) and those with a reduced calf circumference (χ2 = 12.655; p < 0.05). Location of the fistula also influenced upon prolongation of hospital stay (χ2 = 7.817; p < 0.05).ConclusionsType of GIF influences upon survival of the patient. On the hand, hospital stay was dependent upon type of surgery previously performed, location of the fistula, and calf circumference value on admission in the study serie.

Background: Inner lining of lobules or ducts of milk of breast tissue is the origin of the breast cancer. Among females, it constitutes 10.4% of cancer cases incidence all over the world. It thus is the fifth leading cause of mortality all over the world. As known, it is more common in females than males. The objective of this study was to study the clinical and epidemiological profile of breast cancer patients. Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was carried out for a period of two and half years at M. G. M. Hospital, Warangal. Both males and females of 30 years and above were included in the study. Total number of carcinoma cases admitted during 2005 to 2007 for a period of two and half years were 1,428. Total number of carcinoma breast cases admitted during 2005 to 2007 for a period of two and half years were 242.Results: Maximum cases i.e. 44.6% belonged to stage III of breast cancer. Maximum cases were seen among Hindus i.e. 76.4%. As expected, only one case was reported by males which constituted only 0.42%. Highest number of cases i.e. 99 (40.9%) were reported during the age group of 40-50 years. Multi para women constituted more number of cases in 78.8%. Maximum number of cases of breast cancer i.e. 41.6% occurred among menstruating women. Most commonly affected quadrant was upper outer in 55.1% of cases. The most common type was Schirrous carcinoma in 39.6% of cases. Conclusions: Upper outer quadrant was most commonly affected. This indicates that the women in the reproductive age group should be directed to examine their breast daily with specific attention to upper outer quadrant.
