ABSTRACT: Shelter environment stress factors are related to FHV-1 viral reactivation. However, comparisons between conjunctival viral load and environmental factors have not been commonly evaluated. The aim of this study was to correlate FHV-1 viral load in domestic cats with and without clinical signs of conjunctivitis to shelter design in order to use FHV-1 viral load as a parameter of “health management”. Cats from four different shelters underwent an ophthalmological examination. Samples were collected by rolling a DNA/RNAse-free cytobrush over the ventral conjunctival fornix and were stored in 1.5 mL sterile microtubes in 500 μL of Eagle’s minimum essential medium and kept at 4 ºC. Molecular procedures were performed up to 48 hours after collection. Different routines regarding new arrivals were directly related to FHV-1 viral load. Shelters where new arrivals occurred on daily basis had the highest viral load (2.69x108 copies/µL), while those shelters where new arrivals had not occurred in the few months prior to the beginning of the study had the lowest rate (1.63x103 copies/µL). Environmental factors directly influenced FHV-1 DNA viral load. This study highlighted the need to improve the management approach in the animal shelter environment to reduce stressful situations responsible for FHV-1 reactivation and higher viral load quantification.

In July 2019, a vaccine-derived recombinant Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus 1 strain (PRRSV-1) (Horsens strain) infected more than 40 Danish sow herds, resulting in severe losses. In the present study, the pathogenicity of the recombinant Horsens strain was assessed and compared to a reference PRRSV-1 strain using a well-characterized experimental model in young SPF pigs. Furthermore, the efficacies of three different PRRSV-1 MLV vaccines to protect pigs against challenge with the recombinant strain were assessed. Following challenge, the unvaccinated pigs challenged with the Horsens strain had significant increased viral load in serum compared to all other groups. No macroscopic changes were observed at necropsy, but tissue from the lungs and tonsils from almost all pigs were PRRSV-positive. The viral load in serum was lower in all vaccinated groups compared to the unvaccinated group challenged with the Horsens strain, and only small differences were seen among the vaccinated groups. The findings in the present study, combined with two other recent reports, indicate that this recombinant “Horsens” strain indeed is capable of inducing infection in growing pigs as well as in pregnant sows that is comparable to or even exceeding those induced by typical PRRSV-1, subtype 1 strains. However, absence of notable clinical signs and lack of significant macroscopic changes indicate that this strain is less virulent than previously characterized highly virulent PRRSV-1 strains.

This study aimed to describe and determine the prevalence of ocular abnormalities in Polish Hunting Dogs. The study was conducted with 193 Polish Hunting Dogs: 101 female and 92 male animals, aged between 3 months and 12 years. Ophthalmic examinations were performed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, and tonometry based on the ophthalmological protocol for the examination of hereditary eye diseases. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed for dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), while electroretinography was also performed in dogs with SARDS. Five dogs (2.6%) were diagnosed with cataract, iris coloboma in 3 dogs (1.6%), ocular dermoid in 1 dog (0.5%), and retinal dysplasia, distichiasis and entropion in 1 dog (1%). Three dogs (1.6%) were diagnosed with PRA and SARDS occurred in 1 dog. Retinal lesions was observed in 16 dogs (8.3%). The clinical signs of retinopathy observed in Polish Hunting Dogs included discoloration of the tapetal fundus, patchy increased reflectivity in the region of discoloration, focus of hyperpigmentation and an area of tapetal hyper-reflectivity with a pigmented center. SD-OCT performed in the 3 dogs with PRA revealed alteration in the retinal layers, which was most advanced in the non-tapetal fundus. Although SD-OCT revealed retinal layers with normal architecture only in some parts of the dorsal, nasal and temporal regions in dogs with SARDS, areas of disorganized external limiting membrane, myeloid zone, ellipsoid zone, outer photoreceptor segment and interdigitation zone were also observed. Polish Hunting Dogs should undergo periodic ophthalmological examination for the evaluation of other hereditary eye diseases. The prevalence of retinal lesions in Polish Hunting Dogs requires further research.

Abstract Background In malaria-endemic areas, asymptomatic carriers are a reservoir of parasites that contribue to the persistence of malaria transmission. In Côte d’Ivoire, this situation is poorly documented. The objective of our study was to assess the frequency and socio-environmental factors associated with asymptomatic malaria in the town of Assuefry, located in the northeast of Côte d’Ivoire, a region where malaria prevalence remains high. Methods A cross-sectional study in two stages was conducted from October to December 2018, first at the Urban Health Center (UHC) in Assuefry and then in the households. The sample size calculated for patients was 162 extrapolated to 201 people. All persons received at the CSU who had clinical symptoms of malaria and a positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) were included. In the households of these index subjects, a follow-up survey allowed active RDT screening for malaria among all household members with no clinical signs of malaria. The socio-environmental factors taken into account were: the area of residence (urban or peri-urban), domestic animals husbandry, water storage at home, nearby garbage dump, wastewater collection and disposal system, type of housing and number of people in the household. Results The frequency of asymptomatic malaria was 341 (38.8%) out of 879 household members visited. Both female and male gender was concerned (51% vs. 49%). The 5 to 25 years old group concentrated nearly 82% of all cases. Only domestic animals husbandry was associated with asymptomatic malaria at the household level (p = 0.021). Conclusions The high frequency of asymptomatic malaria found in this study is a challenge for the National Malaria Control Program in Côte d’Ivoire. This should be taken into account while organizing control strategies. Key messages The frequency of asymptomatic malaria in Côte d’Ivoire is high. Control strategies must take into account in the guidelines the challenges of detecting and treating asymptomatic malaria. For the judicious use of antimalarial drugs, any subject with a positive RDT without clinical signs of malaria should receive a ‘Drop - Thick’ before treatment.

A central objective in the management of acute kidney injury is the restoration and maintenance of adequate systemic and renal perfusion, often requiring the parallel administration of fluids and vasoactive drugs. However, hypovolaemia and fluid overload may both predispose the patient to complications and poor outcomes. Therefore, body weight and daily fluid intake/output should be recorded, patients should continuously be assessed for clinical signs of under- or over-hydration, and adequate monitoring of haemodynamic parameters should be performed. Together these parameters constitute the basis for individualized fluid therapy that needs to be initiated promptly and should be re-evaluated at least on a daily basis.

Abstract Cattle originating from the southeastern United States and received in stocker and feedlot facilities in the southern Great Plains are at increased risk for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and other health disorders because the marketing and relocation process may result in stress-induced immunosuppression, increased respiratory virus transmission, and poor nutritional status. Cattle health directly affects growth performance because stress and the inflammatory response to infection results in tissue catabolism and anorexia. Preconditioning practices at the ranch origin, such as vaccination, castration, weaning, and feed bunk and water tank exposure, can significantly improve health outcome during the receiving period; however, this practice is underutilized, resulting in high-risk, commingled calves entering subsequent production sectors. Antimicrobial metaphylaxis is one of the most effective management strategies to control an anticipated outbreak of BRD in newly received calves, yet antimicrobial use in food animals is under intense scrutiny. Antimicrobial alternatives such as direct-fed microbial products may provide health benefits but uncertainty regarding the route and timing of application, effective dose, and product selection will require further research to improve application. Nutritional stress resulting from reduced feed and water intake before, during, and after relocation and potential trace mineral deficiency upon arrival must be considered in a comprehensive health management program. Finally, detection of BRD or other diseases in large groups of cattle is challenging because of the prey instinct to disguise clinical signs of illness. Technology that continuously monitor individual cattle behavior may provide early disease detection with greater sensitivity and specificity than traditional methods but several barriers to adoption exist. This symposium presentation will outline the multitude of factors to consider in managing cattle health during the receiving period and provide research-based evidence that challenge paradigm regarding health management of newly received cattle.

Pneumonia is the most common reason for paediatric hospital admission in Vietnam. The potential value of using the World Health Organization (WHO) case management approach in Vietnam has not been documented.We performed a prospective descriptive study of all children (2–59 months) admitted with “pneumonia” (as assessed by the admitting clinician) to the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children to characterise their disease profiles and assess risk factors for an adverse outcome. The disease profile was classified using WHO pneumonia criteria, with tachypnoea or chest indrawing as defining clinical signs. Adverse outcome was defined as death, intensive care unit admission, tertiary care transfer or hospital stay >10 days.Of 4206 admissions, 1758 (41.8%) were classified as “no pneumonia” using WHO criteria and only 252 (6.0%) met revised criteria for “severe pneumonia”. The inpatient death rate was low (0.4% of admissions) with most deaths (11 out of 16; 68.8%) occurring in the “severe pneumonia” group. An adverse outcome was recorded in 18.7% of all admissions and 60.7% of the “severe pneumonia” group. Children were hospitalised for a median of 7 days at an average cost of 253 USD per admission. Risk factors for adverse outcome included WHO-classified “severe pneumonia”, age <1 year, low birth weight, previous recent admission with an acute respiratory infection and recent tuberculosis exposure. Breastfeeding, day-care attendance and pre-admission antibiotic use were associated with reduced risk.Few hospital admissions met WHO criteria for “severe pneumonia”, suggesting potential unnecessary hospitalisation and use of intravenous antibiotics. Better characterisation of the underlying diagnosis requires careful consideration.
