Descriptive study with a qualitative approach, involving 14 families of children with mental disorders assisted at the Psychosocial Child Care Center of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. The objective was to understand the experiences, feelings and reactions of families of child with mental disorder. Data were collected from January till April 2013 through open interviews and then analyzed using thematic Content Analysis. Two categories emerged "Living with mental disorder in childhood: a daily battle" and "Feeling and reacting: experiencing the mental disorder in childhood". It is concluded that the family needs to understand the disease to accept it and thus learn how to live with it, and it is up to the nurse to provide support in order to face the difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Utilization barriers of mental health services are the lack of knowledge about mental health. AIM: This study aimed to identify the knowledge and understanding of the families of people with mental disorders about mental disorders. METHODS: This study is a qualitative research with phenomenological approach. Data were obtained by interview, unstructured observation, and documentation on seven informants in Puskesmas Larompong Luwu, South Sulawesi. Content analysis was used to identify topics or categories in the data. RESULTS: The family of people with mental disorders still has negative views about people with mental disorders. People with mental disorders are often called the term “lunatic,” insane, scary, and dangerous. In addition, people with mental disorders regarded as a person who has a disease that makes people uncomfortable because of behavior that is unnatural. Families have an understanding that the causes of mental disorders associated with the occult and mystical or supernatural events. The factors that cause families have minimal understanding of the appropriate handling for people with mental disorders. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the knowledge and understanding of mental disorder which is owned by the family of people with mental disorders as the holder of a healing role in supporting people with mental disorders are lacking.

ABSTRACTObjective: to understand the nurses’ feelings who care for patients that are dying at Intensive Care Unit. Method: this is about an exploratory-descriptive study from qualitative approach, which had as principal question: How do you feel taking care of patients outside chance of cure Intensive Care Unit? The sample was composed by ten nurses. It was used as a scenario, the Intensive Care Unit of a public hospital in Salvador city. Data collection occurred from August to September 2008, with recorded interviews using a semi-structured script. The content analysis proposed by Bardin was the reference used for the analysis of data, which defined the categories of analysis. Results: two categories emerged: feelings related to the patient and feelings related to with the family. Conclusion: the death is considered by nurses who deal with it in the Intensive Care Unit, as an experience of conflicting emotions, sometimes painful. Descriptors: death; emotions; nursing care; intensive care unit.RESUMOObjetivo: compreender os sentimentos dos enfermeiros ao cuidar do paciente que está morrendo na Unidade de terapia intensiva. Participaram desse estudo, dez enfermeiras. Utilizou-se, como cenário, a Unidade de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital público da cidade de Salvador. A coleta de dados aconteceu entre os meses de agosto e setembro de 2008, a partir de entrevistas gravadas com roteiro semi-estruturado. A Análise de Conteúdo proposta por Bardin foi à referência utilizada para a análise dos dados, onde se definiram as categorias de análise. Resultados: emergiram duas categorias: sentimentos relacionados ao paciente e sentimentos relacionados à família. Conclusão: a morte é tida pelas enfermeiras que com ela lidam no espaço da Unidade de terapia intensiva, como uma vivência de sentimentos conflituosos, por vezes dolorosos. La muestra estuvo compuesta por diez enfermeras. Se utilizó como escenario, la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de un hospital público en la ciudad de Salvador. La recopilación de datos ocurrieron entre los meses de agosto y septiembre de 2008, registrada a partir de entrevistas semi-estructuradas con el guión. El análisis de contenido propuesta por Bardin fue la referencia utilizada para el análisis de los datos, que definen las categorías de análisis. Resultados: surgieron dos categorías: los sentimientos relacionados con el paciente y los sentimientos relacionados con la familia. Conclusión: la muerte es considerada por las enfermeras para hacer frente a ella dentro de la Unidad de Tratamiento Intensivo, como una experiencia de emociones en conflicto, a veces doloroso. Objective: To identify the opinion of patients with mental disorder about tobacco and its prohibition during psychiatric hospitalization. Method: An exploratory study with 96 patients smokers with mental disorders hospitalized in a psychiatric ward of a general hospital. The interviews were conducted individually, using an instrument designed for this study. The content from the interviews was recorded, transcribed and submitted to a thematic content analysis. Results: The patients with mental disorder were identified as perceiving smoking during the psychiatric hospitalization as a help to support the difficulties in socialization and in the lack of activities. The permission for smoking is seen as a signal of respect to their needs. The subjects mentioned to not accept the total smoking prohibition. Conclusion: Tobacco helps to face difficulties and conflicts in the psychiatric hospitalization. There is resistance regarding the possibility to totally withdraw the smoking permission during hospitalization.

Childhood autism is characterized by severe and global impairment in several areas of human development and demands extensive care and dependence on the parents. The objective of this study was to understand the perceptions of mothers of children with autism regarding changes suffered by the child and their trajectories in search of an autism diagnosis. This is an exploratory descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted with ten participant mothers. Data were collected in 2013 by means of semi-structured interviews. Thematic content analysis produced the following categories: perceptions of mothers as to changes in behaviour and/or development of their children; and trajectories of mothers in search of a diagnosis for their children. After the perception of changes in behaviour/development, mothers face an arduous trajectory of healthcare service utilization.

Abstract Objective: To apprehend the experience of grandmothers who take care of their grandchildren who consume psychoactive substances. Methods: A descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted with five grandmothers of two health services in a city in the interior of São Paulo. Data have collected from July 2015 to May 2016, through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the technique of thematic content analysis. Results: The grandmothers recognized that their grandchildren used drugs when they changed their behavior, which required them to take on the role of counselor and educator. The aging process and financial difficulty consisted in limits to care. Conclusion and implications for practice: The grandmothers suffered psychosocial, structural, and organizational impacts, requiring nurses to enhance their facilitator skills in relational processes between two distinct generations of age and values.

Objective: to describe the actions recommended by the Carioca Stork Program for assistance to pregnant women and identifywhether the implementation of this program had repercussions on the assistance from the perspective of the nursingteam. Methods: descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted in a public maternity hospital. Semi-structuredinterviews were conducted with four obstetric nurses and seven nursing auxiliaries who work at the obstetric center of thismaternity hospital. We used the technique of thematic content analysis. Results: the study categories were: Qualification ofthe hospital obstetric care, care and professional repercussions from the Carioca Stork Program. Conclusion: the nursingstaff considered that the implementation of the program brought improvements in childbirth care, favored women’s rightsand the performance of obstetric nursing in the municipal health network.

Objective: to analyze the perception of nursing students about the care given to the persistent family aggressor. Method: a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach. Madeleine Leininger’s Theory of Diversity and Universality of Care was used as a theoretical reference. The data collection took place with 37 in the last year of at a public university in Southeast Brazil. We used the technique of Projective Design with a Topic and semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed with the content analysis. Results: the examination of the narratives underpinned the construction of four categories: The care of the aggressor with the family, Recognition of family values and culture, The search for knowledge to care for the aggressor and family, Multidisciplinary and intersectoral care to confront violence. Conclusion: there is an acknowledgment that the care for the aggressor should not only be individual but should involve all those affected. For this, multidisciplinary work is important, and the search for knowledge on the subject is essential for culturally significant care.

The aim of this study was to analyze the meanings and experiences of early contact and breastfeeding of the postpartum women admitted at a Baby-Friendly Hospital. It is a descriptive, exploratory study, with qualitative approach, that was developed in a teaching hospital in the Northwest of Paraná state between November 2011 and January 2012, involving the participation of 16 postpartum women. Data were collected by means of non-participant systematic observation of the childbirths and semi-structured interview. The data collected were analyzed using the thematic content analysis. The results revealed that, soon after childbirth, the child-mother binomial provided the woman with a unique experience, triggering various sensations into the bio-psycho-social-cultural context of each one of the mothers, with feelings and meanings that favored the mother-child bond and the outset of breastfeeding.

This exploratory descriptive study, using a qualitative approach, aimed to characterize the social support of nurses in the care of their own children. The participants were ten nurses who were mothers, selected through a snowball method. Data collection occurred from November 2011 to January 2012 through semi-structured interviews and construction of families' genograms and ecomaps. Data were analyzed through Bardin content analysis, leading to the establishment of two categories: (1) Returning to work: the importance of family support and (2) The family and their interactive contexts: types of bonds. The social support network of the family is essential to the lives of these women, who need support, assistance and guidance in directing their activities in everyday overload.

The male participation in the process of breastfeeding needs to be encouraged as it can contribute significantly to the prevention of early weaning. In this sense, this research aimed to identify a parent's knowledge about breastfeeding. This is an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed in the Family Health Strategy in Bom Jesus, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interview with the guiding question: what is your understanding of breastfeeding? The population was 15 men with aged over 18 years old and preserved mental faculties, who lived with his wife and the child under one year of age and performed development and growth consultations in the Family Health Strategy. The interviews were conducted in place previously defined parent. The information was organized as content analysis Bardin, giving rise to two categories and analyzed according to the symbolic interacionism. It was observed that parents of participating antenatal clinics have more knowledge about it and recognize the benefits of breastfeeding in this way can encourage their wives in order to exclusive breastfeeding.
