ABSTRACT Cortisol is a steroid hormone, one of the glucocorticoids, made in the cortex of the adrenal glands and then released into the blood, which transports it in the entire body. Almost every cell contains receptors for cortisol and so cortisol can have lots of different actions depending on which sort of cells it is acting upon. These effects include controlling the body’s blood sugar levels and thus regulating metabolism, acting as an anti-inflammatory product, controlling salt and water balance and influencing blood pressure. The study was conducted over a period of 3 months, between March-August 2020, in 2 swine farms in Iasi county, Romania, on a total of 46 pigs, 3 to 4 months old, both males and females, in order to investigate stress levels in finishing facilities. The study revealed higher levels of cortisol while eosinophil counts severely decreased, changes which are associated with a strong reaction to stress for individuals that were housed in finishing facilities.

AbstractAn altered facial appearance is more difficult to face, than problems related to ill-fitting denture or eating. The selection of maxillary anterior teeth for complete denture has long posed problem in clinical practice and a controversy about the best method to employ still exists. An attempt is made in the present study to clinically correlate the face form with maxillary central incisor tooth form in males and females of Davangere population. In 1914, Leon William's projected the “the form method” where he classified facial forms as square, tapering, and ovoid. Maxillary central incisors were selected according to the facial forms.Of total 100 subjects four different tooth forms and face forms were evaluated. They are: square, ovoid, square-tapered, tapered. No significant correlation existed between face form in male and females. Females exhibited greater correlation between face forms and inverted tooth form but that correlation is not sufficient to serve as a guide for selection of anterior teeth.

Skin is the largest organ of the body both by surface area and weight. This covers the entire body. The thickness of skin varies considerably over all parts of the body and between young and old, men and women. It helps to regulate body temperature, stores water fat and permit sensation of touch. Psoriasis is a chronic dermatosis characterized by covered by silvery loose scales. Treatment available on contemporary system is not curative but suppressive only. The prevalence of psoriasis is 8%. Prevalence equal in males and females. A case of Mandala Kustha discussed here. Patient successfully treated with Shodhana (Virechana karma) & Shamana Chikitsa. After course of 2 months treatment provides significant relief in Sign and Symptoms. In our classics mentioned Shodhana Chikitsa for Kustha Roga. Considering the sign and symptoms of patient was treated with classical Virechana karma (therapeutic purgation) and Shamana Chikitsa according to line of treatment of Kustha (Psoriasis). Assessment was done on before treatment, after treatment and after follow up of 2 months; pictures were taken before treatment and after treatment. Remarkable improvement was noticed, induration and itching after Virechana treatment.

Carbohydrate response element binding protein (ChREBP) is critical in the regulation of fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis in the liver. Interestingly, Chrebp-/- mice show reduced levels of plasma cholesterol, which is critical for steroid hormone synthesis in adrenal glands. Furthermore, Chrebp mRNA expression was previously reported in human adrenal glands. Thus, it remains to be investigated whether ChREBP plays a role directly or indirectly in steroid hormone synthesis and release in adrenal glands. In the present study, we find that Chrebp mRNA is expressed in mouse adrenal glands and that ChREBP binds to carbohydrate response elements. Histological analysis of Chrebp-/- mice shows no adrenal hyperplasia and less oil red O staining compared with that in wild-type mice. In adrenal glands of Chrebp-/- mice, expression of Fasn and Scd1, two enzymes critical for fatty acid synthesis, was substantially lower and triglyceride content was reduced. Expression of Srebf2, a key transcription factor controlling synthesis and uptake of cholesterol and the target genes was upregulated, while cholesterol content was not significantly altered in the adrenal glands of Chrebp-/- mice. Adrenal corticosterone content and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone levels were not significantly altered in Chrebp-/- mice. Consistently, expression of genes related to steroid hormone synthesis was not altered. Corticosterone secretion in response to two different stimuli, namely 24-h starvation and cosyntropin administration, were also not altered in Chrebp-/- mice. Taking these results together, corticosterone synthesis and release were not affected in Chrebp-/- mice despite reduced plasma cholesterol levels.

Renin heterogeneity has been described in rat kidney and plasma. In this study, we used the isoelectric focusing method to 1) characterize the adrenal renin forms in control rats, in rats on low- and high-Na diets, and in nephrectomized rats; and 2) examine their resemblance with plasma renin. Active renin (AR) and inactive trypsin-activatable renin (IR) were measured in adrenal homogenates and plasma. Aliquots were subjected to isoelectric focusing gels. Activation with trypsin (5 mg/ml) was performed before or after isoelectric focusing. Results showed that adrenal glands contained AR and IR. The content of adrenal AR increased significantly only in rats fed a low-Na diet. Following anesthesia, nephrectomy, or high-Na intake, the content of adrenal AR and IR was not significantly changed. In plasma, an inverse relationship between AR and IR was found. Adrenal glands contained six forms of AR focusing at the same pH as those of plasma AR but in different proportions. After activation of IR in adrenal glands, two additional renin forms focusing at pH 6.4 and 6.1 were found, whereas after activation of plasma IR, two peaks focusing at pH 5.9 and 4.8 were significantly enhanced. Adrenal AR forms were modified by alterations of salt and water balance differently than plasma AR. These results support the hypotheses of an endogenous production of renin forms by the adrenal gland.

The genus Camillina Berland, 1919 includes 75 valid species which are mainly distributed in South America. However, in Brazil, the knowledge regarding Camillina remains limited and a few contributions to the taxonomy of the genus have been made in the last two decades. Camillina belongs to Zelotinae, a group of gnaphosid spiders which diagnostic character is a preening comb on metatarsi III and IV, and the genus can be recognized by the presence of a prolaterally situated, bifid terminal apophysis and medially situated, recessed embolar base on the male palp and a median epigynal plate. Here, we describe the males and females of three new species: C. suya sp. nov. and C. kuarup sp. nov., both from Fazenda Tanguro, Querência, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil and C. bonaldoi sp. nov. from Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades, Piracuruca, state of Piauí, Brazil.

The determination of the mean normal haemoglobin concentration has re ceived more attention in America than in this country. Recently Price-Jones (1931) has compared the values in London with those found in America. He used the Haldane haemoglobinometer and his results are as accurate as is possible having regard to the method employed. In America his results were 3 percent. above those of the Haldane gas analysis apparatus (1901) by which theclinical instrument is supposed to be calibrated. Twenty comparisons were made in America and showed that the Haldane gas apparatus gave results averaging 2·6 per cent. below those of the Van Slyke apparatus. Price-Jones considers this to have no statistical significance. From the standpoint of experimental accuracy the difference is appreciable, as all methods for the measurement of oxygen combined with Hb are essentially pragmatic.

Abstract Background Individuals living with HIV infection and/or Hep C infection and unaware of their infected status are at risk of significant morbidity and a risk to public health. It has been recommended that all conscious adults presenting to Emergency Departments (EDs) be tested for HIV and increasingly testing for Hep C. Testing of all arrivals is important because a majority of both infections may not present signature signs or symptoms associated with the reason for the ED visit. For these reasons, the implementation of a bundled HIV/HepC testing protocol is reported here. Methods Data from 4 years of HIV/Hep C screening of patients 18 to 64 years old made in 9 EDs in the Houston Metropolitan Area are reviewed. Screening for HIV was using HIV fourth-generation ADVIA Centaur™ Ag/Ab COMBO (Siemens) and Hep C was tested for using Gilead Hep C Ab testing. Results During January 2013 until October 2016, 3,976 HIV/Hep C test bundles were performed. There were 40 (1.0%) HIV+ and 407 (10.2%) Hep C positive detected. Nine (0.2%) of these individuals were positive for both HIV and Hep C. A 22.5% of HIV-positive patients were co-infected with Hep C. The population had a median age of 53 years, comprising an equal number of males and females. Conclusion A significant prevalence of Hep C (10%) and HIV (1%) was found in patients presenting for any cause of major EDs in the Houston region. Bundled HIV/Hep C testing of all arrivals to EDs is an effective way to identify individuals that need to be directed to antiviral and linkage to care. AbstractCongenital radio-ulnar synostosis is caused by a failure of segmentation between the radius and ulna. It occurs rarely, with approximately 350 cases reported. Congenital radioulnar synostosis is equally affected in males and females with half of patients showing bilateral involvement. While most cases of congenital radio-ulnar synostosis occur spontaneously around one in five cases is associated with a family history of the same affliction. This condition can also occur as part of an underlying syndrome or in association with other developmental abnormalities. Congenital radio ulnar synostosis is diagnosed by clinicians through medical history and careful physical examination. X-rays or CT scans are be used to confirm the deformity. The diagnosis of congenital radio-ulnar synostosis is more often made in late childhood or at adolescence, as pain is rarely a complaint and much mobility of elbow flexion and extension preserved. In relatively mild cases, when patients themselves may notice subtle limitations or differences in forearm rotation the diagnosis is typically made at an earlier age.
