ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to assess the effect of vegetation on the runoff coefficients of a Caatinga dry tropical forest before and after thinning. Thus, an experiment was conducted with evaluations in three hydrological years (2008, 2011 and 2013) in Iguatu, State of Ceará, Brazil. In 2008, the vegetation consisted of a 30-year regenerating Caatinga forest. The vegetation was subjected to thinning in 2009, 2011 and 2013, removing trees with less than 10-cm diameter at breast height. Hydrological responses were evaluated as a function of daily precipitation water depths, based on cumulative frequency distribution, by dividing precipitation events into three classes (CP) (CP≤30, 30<CP≤50 and CP>50 mm). Significant differences between runoff coefficients before and after vegetation thinning were assessed through the Student's t-test (p<0.01). Before thinning (2008), CP≤30 mm showed the highest runoff coefficient, differing statistically (p<0.01) from the other years. The results of precipitation events of great magnitude (CP>50 mm) indicate that the runoff is greatly dependent on rainfall characteristics and soil moisture conditions. The greater development of herbaceous vegetation due to thinning reduced the surface runoff.

The shear-stress sensor function of vascular glycocalyx heparan sulphate and hyaluronic acid was investigated in vivo by assessing flow-mediated dilation before and after their removal. Heparinase III exposure (100 mU·mL−1 for 20 min;n = 6) did not significantly affect flow-mediated dilation of the iliac, from 0.42 ± 0.08 mm (mean ± SEM) to 0.34 ± 0.07 mm after (P = 0.12; paired Student’s t test) for a statistically similar increase in shear stress; 18.24 ± 4.2 N·m−2 for the control and 15.8 ± 3.6 N·m−2 for the heparinase III experiment (P = 0.18). Hyaluronidase exposure (0.14–1.4 mg·mL−1 for 20 min; n = 8) also did not significantly reduce flow-mediated dilation of the iliac, which averaged 0.39 ± 0.08 mm before and 0.38 ± 0.09 mm after (P = 0.11) for a statistically similar increase in shear stress; 11.90 ± 3.20 N·m−2 for the control and 9.8 ± 3.33 N·m−2 for the hyaluronidase experiment (P = 0.88). Removal of both heparan sulphate and hyaluronic acid was confirmed using immunohistochemistry. Neither the heparan sulphate nor the hyaluronic acid components of the glycocalyx mediate shear-stress-induced vasodilation in conduit arteries in vivo.

Formation of student youth’s social activity is the leading task of social education, especially under conditions of information society. If psychological and age traits of students as a social group are to be taken into account, the beneficial means of harmonizing this process is leisure activities. Based on interdisciplinary and integrated approaches, a system of social-pedagogical leisure activities was developed to form social activity of student youth. The aim of this article is to analyze the implementation of the social-pedagogical leisure activities system of student youth’s social activity formation. The task of this article is to study the levels of student youth’s social activity before and after implementing the social-pedagogical leisure activities system and to analyze its effectiveness using the corresponding methods. According to outlined tasks, the following methods and indices were selected and used: relative indices method, grouping method, quantitative and qualitative analysis method, Student’s t-test, graphical method. Thanks to systematic approach to experimental part of the research, it was established that the level of students’ social activity formation has improved: the specific share of young people with low level has decreased significantly, while of those with high level has increased. Group curators have noted the tendencies of young people to organize leisure activities, while students themselves were becoming involved in useful leisure practices that were new to them. Effectiveness of the new system was confirmed using statistical methods.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to assess the influence of a tailored physical activity program on specific parameters in Parkinson Disease (PD) patients. METHOD: PD patients were assessed before and after six months of a tailored physical activity program. Twenty PD patients (13 M, 7 F), mean age 55 years. Aerobic, resistance and stretching exercises. No special apparatus or machine was used at any stage of the program. There was no interference with the pharmacologic treatment, which remained at the discretion of the physician in charge. Fatigue, disability, joint amplitude, cardiorespiratory parameters and body fat composition were assessed. Comparisons were performed using the Student’s t-test at baseline and after six months. RESULTS: There was a significant (p0.001) and positive effect of this physical activity program in all assessed parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Despite this chronic, disabling and progressive neurological disease, PD patients showed significant improvement in all assessed parameters after participating in a specific and tailored physical activity program.

Chemo- or radiotherapy negatively affects the fertility of female patients undergoing oncological treatments. Ovaries are sensitive to such treatments, resulting in an increasing number of premature ovarian failures. Graft techniques are a promising alternative to preserve the fertility of such patients. So far, 35 birthed from human ovarian cortex autografts were reported in the literature; however, in this approach there is a risk of neoplastic reincidence. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of ectopic ovarian cortex xenograft (using the bovine model) under the back skin of immunodeficient mice. Female SCID mice (~60 days, n = 38) were anesthetized with ketamine/xilazine and were placed on ventral decubitus. Ovarian cortex fragments from 8 cows (1.5 mm3; n = 152) were grafted through incisions made in the dorsal region (4 grafts per mouse). Ten days after ovarian fragments xenograft, the recipients were killed and the xenografts were harvested. The mice and grafts were weighed before and after the transplant. From the xenografts recovered, 88 were either routinely processed for histology (n = 26), to evaluate the progression of folliculogenesis, or sliced (n = 62) to recover the cumulus‐oocyte complexes, which were morphologically classified and used for in vitro embryo production, using standard procedures (in vitro maturation, fertilization, and embryo culture). The remaining grafts recovered (64) were stored in liquid nitrogen for future studies. Differences between means were compared using Student’s t-test. There was no difference between the body weight of recipient mice before and after xenograft (20.5 ± 0.4 v. 21 ± 0.8 g, respectively; P > 0.05). On the other hand, the grafts increased weight (11.6 ± 3.4 v. 14.8 ± 5.2 mg before and after transplant; P < 0.01). Histological analysis of the slices showed primordial, primary, multilaminar, antral, and atretic follicles, indicating the progression of folliculogenesis and neo-angiogenesis in the grafts. Twenty-four viable cumulus‐oocyte complexes were recovered from ovarian xenografts, from which 2 blastocysts were produced in vitro 8 days later (8.3% blastocyst rate). In summary, this study showed that ovarian xenografts were (i) healthily maintained under the back skin of immunodeficient mice, (ii) responsive to murine gonadotrophins, and (iii) able to produce viable cumulus-oocyte complexes that, (iv) by in vitro fertilization, can originate blastocysts. In general, our findings show the feasibility of the ovary xenograft as an alternative technique to fertility preservation in oncogenic patients, avoiding the risk of neoplastic re-incidence. Background: Serum electrolytes, Creatinine, and thyroid profile play an important role in 131I treated patients of thyroid disorders. Objectives: To determine the effect of radioactive iodine (131I) on renal parameters, serum electrolytes and the correlation among TFT’S, creatinine, and chloride levels before and after I131 treatment in thyroid disorders. Methods: The study was performed on 55 patients of thyrotoxicosis with age ranging from 16-65 years (mean age= 41±14years and BMI=24.8±4.46). The significance of the differences between the results of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-time serum analysis was assessed by paired Student's t-test. Association between parameters was assessed by Spearman correlation analysis. Results: 40 patients were taking Carbimazole, and 15 were directly recommended for I131 therapy. Strongly significant variations were observed for TFT’S (T3=0.012, T4 =0.017, and TSH=0. 001) during the follow-up treatment. Before taking I131 (Serum analyzed at 1st time), there observed negative correlation of T3(r=-.46, p=0. 002) and TSH (r=-0.31, p=0.02) with creatinine, and positive correlation of TSH(r=0.29,p=0.02) with chloride. BMI was negatively correlated with potassium(r=-0.30, p=0.02). At the 2nd time (after stopping the Carbimazole), no correlation results were observed. Two months after oral administration of 131I, creatinine, and chloride level was significantly increased (p=0.000), (P=0. 03) respectively, but had no correlation with TFT’S. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that patients with goiter (diffused or toxic) have association of TFT’S and BMI with serum electrolytes and creatinine, 131I therapy is also associated with the increase in creatinine and chloride levels of patients leading to kidney problems.

e12550 Background: BC is still one of the main causes of death in women due to the tumor recurrence and/or resistance to anticancer therapy. The criteria to assess the effectiveness of BC treatment are important. The purpose of the study was to analyze blood levels of steroid and pituitary hormones in BC patients after two chemotherapy cycles. Methods: The study included 42 patients with various biological BC subtypes: luminal A, luminal B and triple-negative BC (TNBC). Levels of estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, prolactin, LH, FSH and cortisol were measured by RIA in the blood of all patients before and after two neoadjuvant chemotherapy cycles. Significance of differences was evaluated by the Student’s t-test. Results: Levels of many hormones were high before the treatment in patients with all BC subtypes. After two chemotherapy cycles, unidirectional changes in the values were found in patients with subsequent remission for more than three years. Levels of estradiol decreased in luminal A BC by 1.7 times (p˂0.05), in luminal B BC – by 11.6 times (p˂0.05), cortisol decreased by 2.4 and 1.7 times (p˂0.05) respectively, and prolactin – on average by three times (p˂0.05). LH levels increased in luminal A and luminal B BC by 1.65 times (p˂0.05). In patients with TNBC, levels of estradiol decreased by 1.8 times, and cortisol – by two times (p˂0.05). Patients with subsequent remission regardless of BC subtypes had unchanged levels of testosterone, progesterone and FSH. Patients with luminal B and TNBC subtypes with progression in 6-12 months did not show significant changes in prolactin and cortisol levels after two chemotherapy cycles, compared with the values before treatment. Conclusions: A decrease in blood levels of prolactin and cortisol after two chemotherapy cycles is an indicator of a long-term remission in patients with breast cancer.

Introduction: In infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis on non-invasive ventilation (NIV) via the RAM cannula nasal interface, variables predicting subsequent intubation, or NIV non-response, are understudied. We sought to identify predictors of NIV non-response. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in infants admitted for respiratory failure from bronchiolitis placed on NIV in a quaternary children’s hospital. We excluded children with concurrent sepsis, critical congenital heart disease, or with preexisting tracheostomy. The primary outcome was NIV non-response defined as intubation after a trial of NIV. Secondary outcomes were vital sign values before and after NIV initiation, duration of NIV and intubation, and mortality. Primary analyses included Chi-square, Wilcoxon rank-sum, student’s t test, paired analyses, and adjusted and unadjusted logistic regression assessing heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) before and after NIV initiation. Results: Of 138 infants studied, 34% were non-responders. There were no differences in baseline characteristics of responders and non-responders. HR decreased after NIV initiation in responders (156 [143-156] to149 [141-158], p < 0.01) compared to non-responders (158 [149-166] to 158 [145-171], p = 0.73). RR decreased in responders (50 [43-58] vs 47 [41-54]) and non-responders (52 [48-58] vs 51 [40-55], both p < 0.01). Concurrent bacterial pneumonia (OR 6.06, 95% CI: 2.54-14.51) and persistently elevated HR (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.07) were associated with NIV non-response. Conclusion: In children with acute bronchiolitis who fail to respond to NIV and require subsequent intubation, we noted associations with persistently elevated HR after NIV initiation and concurrent bacterial pneumonia.

Background: The aim of the present study was to assess the level of satisfaction of dentists working in primary healthcare (PHC) with a Distance learning (DL) course in pediatric dentistry offered by the TeleHealthRS center, and to the investigate possible associations between the variables indicative of their satisfaction and their performance on the questionnaires applied before and after the course. Methods: The course was offered in 2015 by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) together with the TeleHealthRS center in Brazil. Data were collected on the participants’ personal and professional profile, their pre- and post-course knowledge about pediatric dentistry, and their satisfaction with the course. Student's t-test and the ANOVA test were used to assess the possible associations between the variables indicative of their satisfaction and their performance on the questionnaires applied before and after the course. Results: Overall, the participants were satisfied with the course, however, no statistically significant association was found between the variables indicative of their satisfaction and the grades they earned on the pre- and postcourse questionnaires. Conclusion: The available pediatric dentistry course received positive evaluations from the participants, constituting a possible strategy for the qualification of primary care dentists. Future studies are warranted to further investigate the expectations of DL course participants, aiming to enhance the quality of future editions of this learning modality for pediatric dentistry contents.

The incidence rate of Gridhrasi (sciatica) is quite significant as more than three-quarters of the world's population is affected by the disease. It is characterized by the onset of Ruja (pain), Toda (pricking), and Stambha (stiffness), initially in Sphika (gluteal region) and then radiating distally to Kati-Prishtha (low back), Janu (knee), Jangha (thigh) till Pada (feet). The patients suffering from Gridhrasi have restricted movements due to painful limb, affecting the daily routine activities. Aim: To study and evaluate the therapeutic effect of Raktamokshan in the management of Gridhrasi with the modified version of Shrunga. (cupping). Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on twenty patients who had reported for the treatment of Gridhrasi at an Ayurvedic hospital. Raktamokshana was done on Sphik (gluteal region) or Kati (low back) region with the help of 22 no.surgical blades and modified version of shrunga (cupping instrument)in four settings (0, 5th, 10th and 15th day). The sign and symptoms, namely Ruka, Toda, Stambha  were given scores depending on their severity. The patients were also assessed for straight-leg raise (SLR) test. Follow-up was done at an interval of 5 days for three times and the scores were noted down before and after treatment. The scores were analyzed using the Student's t-test. Result: Marked reduction in severity of mean scores of Ruja, Toda, Stambha was seen in the patients after the use of the modified version of shrunga (cupping instrument) for Raktamokshana, which was statistically significant. Conclusions: cupping is the simple and effective treatment (in adjunct to other treatment) for reducing Ruka, Toda, Stambha  in Gridhrasi.

Background In December 2019, a novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) broke out in Wuhan, China; however, the factors affecting the mortality of COVID-19 remain unclear. Methods Thirty-two days of data (the growth rate/mortality of COVID-19 cases) that were shared by Chinese National Health Commission and Chinese Weather Net were collected by two authors independently. Student’s t-test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to test the difference in the mortality of confirmed/severe cases before and after the use of “Fangcang, Huoshenshan, and Leishenshan” makeshift hospitals (MSHs). We also studied whether the above outcomes of COVID-19 cases were related to air temperature (AT), relative humidity (RH), or air quality index (AQI) by performing Pearson’s analysis or Spearman’s analysis. Results Eight days after the use of MSHs, the mortality of confirmed cases was significantly decreased both in Wuhan (t = 4.5, P < 0.001) and Hubei (U = 0, P < 0.001), (t and U are the test statistic used to test the significance of the difference). In contrast, the mortality of confirmed cases remained unchanged in non-Hubei regions (U = 76, P = 0.106). While on day 12 and day 16 after the use of MSHs, the reduce in mortality was still significant both in Wuhan and Hubei; but in non-Hubei regions, the reduce also became significant this time (U = 123, P = 0.036; U = 171, P = 0.015, respectively). Mortality of confirmed cases was found to be negatively correlated with AT both in Wuhan (r =  − 0.441, P = 0.012) and Hubei (r =  − 0.440, P = 0.012). Also, both the growth rate and the mortality of COVID-19 cases were found to be significantly correlated with AQI in Wuhan and Hubei. However, no significant correlation between RH and the growth rate/mortality of COVID-19 cases was found in our study. Conclusions Our findings indicated that both the use of MSHs, the rise of AT, and the improvement of air quality were beneficial to the survival of COVID-19 patients.
