OBJECTIVE: To apply the "Orem's Self-care Theory" in ostomy patient care. METHODS: This is a clinical study with an intestinal ostomy patient, whose illness is a consequence of the "Chagas disease". Data collection was performed during the home visits, using a form with questions referred to the Orem's presuppositions. The data were analyzed and presented according to the determining factors in self-care development. RESULTS: Some self-care requirements were modified, such as: "Balance between loneliness and social interaction" and "Self-care in health disorders". The home care delivered based on the supporteducation system allowed for the promotion of health and the patient's perception regarding the importance of self-care. CONCLUSION: The self-care theory allowed for appropriate care and therapeutic communication adjusted to the patient's situation.

Methods: qualitative research, conducted with 12 hospitalized patients. Data collection took place through individual interviews. The speeches were transcribed in full, submitted to thematic content analysis, and the discussion was based on the Transpersonal Care theory. Results: from the speeches, three categories emerged: Spirituality and religiosity: meaning and balm to human life; Benefits of the practice of euphemia in the hospital environment; Spirituality, religiosity, and euphemia in the art of nursing care: biopsychosocial triad in the patient’s perception. Conclusion: spirituality, religiosity, and euphemia were configured as a biopsychosocial triad capable of attributing meaning, foundation, and balm to human life. Also, it may encourage patients and nursing professionals to face the adversities of the hospital environment.

This research aimed at systematizing nursing care to HIV/aids patients in view of Orem's Self-care Deficit Nursing Theory, using the convergent-care method and the Self-Care Nursing Process. Subjects were thirteen HIV/AIDS patients attended at a non-governmental organization in Fortaleza/CE, Brazil. We used interview techniques, physical examination, observation and information records, with a structured instrument, addressing requisites related to universal self-care, development and health alterations. Self-care deficits corresponded to nineteen nursing diagnoses, named according to NANDA's Taxonomy II, ten of which were based on the requisites for universal self-care, five on the requisites for self-care related to development and four on the requisites for self-care related to health deviations. In care planning, goals were established and the system and health methods were selected, prioritizing support-education actions in order to engage HIV/aids patients in self-care.

ABSTRACT Objective: to report the experience of professors and students of a graduate course on nursing care in coping with the new coronavirus (COVID-19) based on Self-Care Theory. Method: the active methodologies used were a literature search and seminar presentations, with an understanding of Orem's theoretical concepts: health; man; self-care; universal, developmental and health deviation requirements; self-care activities; self-care deficits; the required therapeutic demand; nursing systems. The pandemic was considered a health deviation that requires critical thinking and nursing care planning. Methodological frameworks to classify nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes were used. Results: for each health deviation, nursing systems were identified; self-care deficits, diagnoses; actions, interventions; and the form of assessment, outcomes. Final considerations: theoretical-practical reflections of the academic context support nursing care planning.

AbstractMental health nurses should professionally address the self-care deficit problem in schizophrenic patients, especially in the psychosocial rehabilitation phase. The nursing intervention of the self-care deficit patients can be delivered based on the nursing theoretical framework. The Orem’s self-care theory elucidates the concept of self-care, self-care deficit, and its nursing care. In the rehabilitation context, the Orem’s theory is relevant to the aim of rehabilitation – optimalizing the client’s own daily functional capacities.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand how self-care is carried out by people with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. Method: A qualitative approach was used. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews in 12 individuals on hemodialysis in Chile between September and December 2018. Dorothea Orem's self-care theory was used for directed content analysis. Results: Three categories emerged: self-care requirements, self-care deficit, and education and information management for self-care. People were aware of the importance of carrying out their self-care. They also stated not to carry out the care actions rigorously enough showing some limitations. Finally, people’s knowledge about their condition was usually acquired from the Internet and from their own experience rather than through consultations with a health team. Considerations: People are conscious about their role in their health in a flexible way. The health team should know how to recognize conditions interfering in people’s self-care and help to overcome them.

The nano-silver antibacterial dressing is processed and formed after being expanded and cut by medical degreased gauze and nano-silver solution. The nano-silver content is 0.4%–1.0% of the dressing mass (the nano-silver content per square meter of the dressing is 0.28–0.7 g). Nano silver plays an auxiliary role in reducing wound infections. This study is the first to report the rehabilitative effect of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) management combined with nano antibacterial dressing in the perioperative period of gynecological cancer. The times until first exhaust, first defecation, ambulation, and the duration of hospitalization of the ERAS group were shorter than in the regular group. The VAS scores at 6 and 12 h after operation in the ERAS group were lower than those in the regular group. The levels of self-responsibility, self-concept, self-care skills, and health knowledge in the ERAS group were higher than those in the regular group. The total incidence of complications in the ERAS group was 9.09%, which was lower than that in the regular group (23.64%). The level of satisfaction with nursing care in the ERAS group was 98.18%, which was higher than that in the regular group (83.64%). The findings confirmed that ERAS combined with nano antibacterial dressing can promote the rehabilitation of patients, relieve pain, strengthen the self-care ability of patients, reduce the occurrence of complications, and improve satisfaction with nursing care.

There is a shift in emphasis in nursing care of the mentally retarded child in the community. Firstly, the child must be identified and then his condition is evaluated, usually by a multi-disciplinary team. A decision must then be made whether the child will be cared for in the community. The nurse assists the parent or guardian in training for independence which includes self-care, use of toilet, personal hygiene, and dressing. Training in various perceptual and motor skills are also included in the nursing care plan. The nurse makes follow-up visits to evaluate progress and adapts the nursing care plan as necessary. She also has an important role in encouraging and guiding the parents. Nursing the mentally retarded child in the community requires specialised knowledge — and a lot of love.
