A Study on the Differences in Middle School English Pronunciation Teaching in Underdeveloped and Developed Areas in China and Their Impact

Spoken English is one of the most important parts in English learning. And the footstone of Spoken English is pronunciation, which should have taken pride of educational place in the courses of secondary education anywhere. Differences of pronunciation teaching in middle school exist in the English pronunciation teaching between underdeveloped areas and developed areas, which effects students’ further English study. By the methods of interviewing and questionnaire, this paper makes a comparison of current situation of English teaching in middle schools from underdeveloped areas and developed areas in China. This thesis analyzes the causes of differences from teaching idea, teaching contents and teaching faculty, and the impact on the students from students’ listening and speaking abilities in the university. Finally, the author presents some constructive suggestions.

In the process of students’ learning English pronunciation, some pronunciation errors caused by the negative transfer of Chinese are caused. If these negative transfer effects of Chinese cannot be overcome, it will hinder the improvement of students’ listening and speaking skills. This article analyzes the impact of negative dialect transfer on English phonetics learning from three aspects: phoneme, coherent pronunciation and intonation, and proposes some coping strategies, hoping to instruct teachers to help students overcome the impact of negative dialect transfer and improve their English pronunciation level during the listening and speaking teaching process.

According to the understanding of English learning process and the surrounding educational environment, it is found that most English learners have not received the training of morpheme awareness, and English teachers have hardly cultivated their students' morpheme awareness. In English learning, it is found that English morpheme awareness plays a role in promoting English learning. It can be seen from the relevant literature that the identification of English morphemes is very important for English learners' language acquisition and development, and has attracted the attention of researchers at home and abroad. This paper mainly studies the influence of morpheme awareness on junior middle school English learners' reading comprehension.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of TED-Vodcast on academic oral proficiency, with a focus on accuracy and fluency of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. There is no doubt that most of the university students in different fields of study face a lot of hardships while attending international conferences for presenting a paper which is due to lack of English proficiency. In this research, 34 female freshman students of English Language and Literature at Semnan University aged between 18-27 were selected and assigned into 2 groups of experimental (N=19) and control (N=15). TED-Vodcast was integrated into experimental group and conventional method of teaching listening and speaking was applied for the control group. Both groups took pretest and posttest which were in the form of interviews. The relation of 3 dependent variables of the two groups were computed by MANOVA and independent sample T-test was used as well. The findings of the study indicated that TED-Vodcast had significant effects on learners' oral proficiency as well as accuracy but not on fluency.

Depending on the channel of communication, people use a variety of skills; particularly, listening and speaking. People often see the need to listen, understand and speak to one another in order to communicate successfully. For this reason, English learners are in need of learning the speaking skill effectively to be able to communicate successfully in real-life English situations. The study adopts theoretical and practical approaches to investigating and evaluating the impact of Listening and Speaking classes on the speaking skill of the students at the English Departments of the College of Languages and the College of Basic Education at the University of Duhok. The paper deals with teaching speaking skill and offers some activities on the speaking skill in the light of communicative language teaching (CLT) to assist the learners in communicating more efficiently in everyday English. The study adopts a mixed methods approach to evaluate the learners’ attitudes towards their speaking skill by constructing a questionnaire for the students, and interviewing them. The study concludes that the integration of the listening and speaking skills helps to improve the students’ speaking skill.

As an international language, English is getting more and more attention. Middle school English is relatively simple, however, university and college English involves the English communication level in the later period of students, therefore, the requirements for English learning are higher, but the effect of university and college English teaching is not obvious. This paper puts forward some suggestions for several teaching methods in university and college English classroom.
