Migrants’ processes of (dis)embedding in local and transnational social networks have received growing attention in recent years, but most research focuses on low‐skilled migration. This study explores the affordances and challenges that Russian physicians, as a high‐skilled migrant group in Finland, experience in these processes in work and non‐work domains. Based on semi‐structured biographical interviews with 26 Russian physicians, the study employs Bourdieu’s socio‐analysis to analyze their narratives. The results reveal that Russian migrant physicians negotiate and experience differentiated embedding across work–life domains in local and transnational contexts. They mostly develop collegial relationships with Finnish colleagues and benefit from fulfilling professional relationships in the work domain. However, alongside time and efforts needed for building social ties, various factors often impede friendship making and socialization with locals beyond the work domain. These physicians cope with individual life circumstances through their enduring and supportive relationships with their Russian relatives and colleagues–friends. These results indicate that high‐skilled migrants have a greater opportunity to connect professionally with locals than low‐skilled migrants, but experience similar challenges to the latter in building close personal relationships.

Lisanne Wilken: Fieldwork among People Personal relationships between the anthropologist and the informants in a given field plays a crucial role for anthropological fieldwork and for the information the anthropologist gets. With reference to personal experiences from fieldwork in Northern and Central Italy, the author argues that methods of establishing and maintaining personal field relations ought to play a much more prominent role in the discussions of anthropological field methods than is usually the case. In today’s discussions of anthropological methodology one can easily get the impression that field relations are coincidentially automatically, established, or that anthropologists have an innate capacity for the creation of social relationships in a variety of social and cultural contexts. The article discusses how dependence on a few close informants may block the collection of data and suggests ways to establish a broad range of informants. One solution is to establish field relations prior to the commencement of fieldwork. This method not only ensures that informants are available when fieldwork is started but also facilitates the cross-cutting of social boundaries which may otherwise be difficult to crosscut.The article also suggests that questionnaires may be used as a method to attract attention to the research project in the field and to broaden the circle of informants. The focus of the article is not the nature of the data collected during fieldwork, but rather the circumstances for the collection of data.

Grandiose narcissists typically pursue agentic goals, such as social status, competence, and autonomy. We argue that because high intelligence is a key asset for the attainment of such agentic goals, the concept of intelligence should play a prominent role in grandiose narcissists’ self-regulation and social behavior. We review the relevant literature and report evidence in support of this claim. Grandiose narcissists consider intelligence to be an important resource that leads to benefits across life domains, they tend to maintain and defend illusory positive intellectual self-views, and they are extremely motivated to appear intelligent to other people. Thus, even though grandiose narcissism is essentially unrelated to objectively assessed intelligence, intelligence nevertheless plays an important role in the way grandiose narcissists think, feel, and behave. We discuss potential implications for social relationships and point toward avenues for future research.

This qualitative study explores clients’ perspectives on their personal relationships while in compulsory drug treatment. Interviews with 31 participants (14 female and 17 male) were conducted at four compulsory treatment institutions for adults who use drugs in Sweden. Taken together, our study reveals that clients in general had to struggle to maintain social relationships due to strict restrictions on their interpersonal contact and communication. Feelings of isolation and anxiety characterized much of their relationships during the treatment period, with emotional withdrawal commonly described as a way to cope. Moreover, some participants expressed shame and guilt over the pain and suffering they had subjected their family members to through their drug use, feelings that put additional strain on the contact. The emotionally and socially significant relationships described by our interviewees provide links to other personal roles and settings than those prescribed by the institution. At the studied institutions, however, little attention was given to this relational dimension of the clients’ situation. Based on the results of the present study, possibilities for improvement of compulsory drug treatment are discussed.

This article examines one aspect of the criticism of inauthenticity that can be levelled against the trustworthiness of professional relationships in general and nurse-patient relationships in particular. The overall question is: are such relationships inherently trustworthy or untrustworthy, from the patient’s point of view? The author concludes that, in spite of legitimate grounds for concern, and while it remains true that nurse-patient relationships may be untrustworthy, they are not inherently so for reasons of inauthenticity relating to emotional labour. The arguments used to defend this claim take their force from the idea that different criteria may be needed to assess the authenticity of nurse-patient relationships from those used to evaluate authenticity in ordinary social relationships. The utility of Hochschild’s idea of ‘deep’ acting, as offering a useful model for the management of emotions in nursing, is examined and rejected.

As psychotherapists we cannot avoid the significant impact and relevance of online social media to our thinking about relationships. This article discusses the world of online social media and its relationship to psychotherapy. The rise of and exponential increase in interactive online social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and blogging have been collectively dubbed “Web 2.0.” This term refers to the fact that the internet has become a user-interactive space for relating and, as such, increasing numbers of people are starting and maintaining personal and professional relationships online. The article provides a brief introduction to these terms, relevant websites, and the different uses and applications of these sites. Some relevant research into the effects of the use of social media on mood and experiences of social relationships is also included. Research in this field supports the idea that our online relating is consistent with our offline behaviour. The article concludes with some guidelines based on being a “participant observer” and psychotherapist. This article discusses religious tolerance from the perspective of interpersonal communication. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods through a phenomenological approach. The results showed that inter-personal communication patterns that occurred between members of the Pelita community in building religious tolerance based on interpersonal competence, friendship associations, professional relationships, and websites for inter-personal relationships. While romantic communication pat-terns and family relationships did not appear. This is because Pelita was medium for people meeting from various religious backgrounds who were not tied based on genetic, but communication amongst members relying on the social and national based relationship.

Objectives Ischemic heart disease (IHD) displays wide social inequalities that are often explained with reference to lifestyle factors. However, research indicates that social support may also play an important role in social inequality in IHD. This study aims to explore the role of social support in the experience of life with IHD for socially disadvantaged patients. Methods The study was conducted as a critical hermeneutic qualitative study in Denmark between October 2018 and August 2019. Data consist of in-depth qualitative interviews with 30 socially disadvantaged patients with IHD. Results The findings showed a notable difference between the participants who were engaged in close and supportive social relationships and those who were not. Life with IHD for those who lacked supportive relationships tended to be marked by feelings of chaos, powerlessness and meaninglessness. Contrarily, those who were engaged in supportive relationships received help to navigate their life with illness, reconcile with what had happened to them, feel empowered, and gain a sense of meaning in their life. Discussion: Social support from close social relationships appears to be crucial for socially disadvantaged ischemic heart patients, and should be encouraged and facilitated in healthcare and interventions targeting this patient group.

Contemporary society leaves many individuals without a continuing support group. Continued integration into a network of supportive social relationships is demonstrably related to the prevention of breakdown in health in the widest variety of mental and physical forms. Yet the task of assuring continuity of supportive relationships has not been central to any professional discipline. The facilitation of social support is likely to become more central to community health education. To address this issue we examine seven different forms of intervention which address the problem of augmenting supportive relationships. The goal is to extract the essence of the professional role in the provision of social support and to suggest its relevance to community health education.

Emma Davidson and Lisa Whittaker, see young people as becoming the ‘new poor’ as they struggle to cope with increasingly precarious transitions into in (ter)dependent living. Care leavers across the UK continue to experience marginalisation and have poorer outcomes from educational performance and employment through to health and housing. They focus on the hardship of marginality within a specific group of young people, as care leavers who are vulnerable to service cuts associated with austerity in the UK. There approach is to develop narratives concerned with the importance of long-term, personal relationships whilst in care which emphasises the importance of establishing long term personal relationships whilst in care.

STARTING SCHOOL IS A critical and potentially stressful time for many young children, and having supportive relationships with parents, teachers and peers and friends offer better outcomes for school adjustment and social relationships. This paper explores matters of friendship when young children are starting school, and how they initiate friendships. In audio-recorded conversations with researchers, the children proposed a number of strategies, including making requests, initiating clubs and teams, and peer intervention to support a friend. Their accounts drew on social knowledge and relational understandings, and showed that having someone, a friend, to play with was important for starting school. Children gave serious attention to developing strategies to initiate friendships.
