The relationship of the phenomena occurring on our planet is considered. The author suggests looking at the process of city formation as one of them, putt ing it on a par with phenomena of both a biological and physical nature. The article provides a classification of some phenomena occurring in observable reality. A hypothesis is put forward, which is accompanied by a questionnaire study. This hypothesis partially relates to the question of the correctness of the architect’s work regarding the preservation of historical and architectural heritage within urban space. In parallel, it is proposed to rethink the concept of “historical and architectural monument” in the context of the city with respect to its inhabitants. The article is accompanied by illustrative material by the author.

This article explores some visual narratives of the architectural landscape of Alma-Ata city (modern Almaty). Historical narratives produced or studied by historians in the text are no less vividly and distinctly manifested in the visual sphere. In many ways, this can be attributed to the design of urban space and its architecture. Architecture not only directly depends on the socio-political, ideological, and symbolic regime, but often creates it. Being a product of the era, a zone of perception and reflection of its impulses, the architectural landscape of the city creates a socio-cultural space, which in turn forms the mental background for the inhabitants of this city. Knowledge about cities is a special subject field for comparative urban studies, including a culturalanthropological and ethnographic basis. The article attempts to describe the two main architectural narratives of the city of Almaty (Stalinist Empire style and Soviet modernism) and their projections in the space of historical memory, as well as the relationship of these narratives with the corresponding ideologies (imperial geopolitical ambitions of the USSR in the post-war period and the ideology of modernism of the 60-80s biennium). The problem of updating the cultural heritage of Soviet architecture in the historical memory of the Kazakh society is also posed.

Abstract

URBAN ECONOMY AND STREET ARTISTS: PERFORMANCE, MOBILITY, AND CONFLICT IN A TOURISTIFIED PUBLIC SPACE

This article reflects on the complex relationship between street artists, their performances and urban space. For this reflection, we draw upon a study conducted in the Baixa, located in the historic centre of the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Methodologically, the study involved shadowed observation, including walks and videography, which took place between 2016 and 2021, as well as a set of 15 interviews with street artists which were conducted in 2018. Conceptually, the study draws upon the growing body of works within the scope of sensory geography and ethnomusicology, namely regarding street artists and their performances, and their intersection with economic issues, aspects of urbanity, the influence of tourism and sensory experiences. Our results reveal the process of territorialization of performance sites in Lisbon’s Baixa, the impact of artistic performances in the public space, and the relationship of street artists with the formal agents of the urban economy. We conclude the article with a brief reflection on the significance of tourism for the expansion of busking.

The study focuses on the city of Kolozsvár, an important city for both the Romanian and the Hungarian elite, which is a university and a cultural center at the same time. This is the reason the historically defined competition that characterizes the relationship of the two elite groups appears as a symbolic conflict, at stake being the redistribution of the symbolic capital. The author used the techniques of mental mapping and interviews to unveil the symbolic competition for the urban space, while emphasizing its changing character

This article analyses the relationship of mutual benefit that formed between West Berlin's local government and experimental artists in the 1980s. In 1978 the West Berlin parliament established a grant programme to support independent artists operating in what was referred to as the ‘free scene’. The grants were intended to support the goal of restoring the city's status as a capital of artistic innovation. Soon after, the local tourism office also featured these independent artists within a new place marketing strategy focused on raising the ‘experiential value’ of the city's cultural offerings. But as this article shows, experimental artists were also using city grants to pursue alternative agendas focused on engaging with local populations in urban space. Through these projects, experimental artists extended the spirit of participatory democracy flourishing within the city's counter-cultural enclaves to broader areas of the city.

Abstract URBAN PATHWAYS AS A WAY TO SEARCH AFROCRATENSE HERITAGE Spatial awareness should be the main objective of teaching geography, whether in the academic or school environment, as a means of apprehending and transforming reality. Therefore, the study of the place is essential, as a space of daily living, where we can glimpse more strongly the social materiality. In this context, urban paths constitute an appropriate methodology for understanding the spatial consciousness-place relationship, as they allow the city to walk, glimpsing the essence-form of geographic objects. In the case of this work, we had as a contribution the relationship spatial awareness-place-black space, considering the architectural heritage forged through African construction techniques and African and African descent workforce in the city of Crato-Ce. Based on the African descent research (CUNHA JUNIOR, 2013), Africanities and African descent (CUNHA JUNIOR, 2001), associated with the methodology of urban pathways, we researched the Afrocratean heritage from architecture. We synthesized the results into three architectural examples, namely the old House Chamber and Jail, the free and traditional Fair and the São José Seminary. Thus, the urban paths, conditioned on the appropriate conceptual basis, promoted spatial awareness of the Afrocrat heritage, being relevant instrument of study of the urban space.

This article discusses the struggles of urban social movements for a de-neoliberalisation of housing policies in Poulantzian terms as a “condensation of the relationship of forces”. Drawing on an empirical analysis of the “Berliner Mietenvolksentscheid” (Berlin rent referendum), which was partially successful in forcing the city government of Berlin to adopt a more progressive housing policy, the article argues that urban social movements have the capacity to challenge neoliberal housing regimes. However, the specific materiality of the state apparatus and its strategic selectivity both limit the scope of intervention for social movements aiming at empowerment and non-hierarchical decision-making.

Public spaces are designed and managed in many different ways. In Hanoi, after the Doi moi policy in 1986, the transfer of the public spaces creation at the neighborhood-level to the private sector has prospered na-ture of public and added a large amount of public space for the city, directly impacting on citizen's daily life, creating a new trend, new concept of public spaces. This article looks forward to understanding the public spaces-making and operating in KDTMs (Khu Do Thi Moi - new urban areas) in Hanoi to answer the question of whether ‘socialization’/privatization of these public spaces will put an end to the urban public or the new means of public-making trend. Based on the comparison and literature review of studies in the world on public spaces privatization with domestic studies to see the differences in the Vietnamese context leading to differences in definitions and roles and the concept of public spaces in KDTMs of Hanoi. Through adducing and analyzing practical cases, the article also mentions the trends, the issues, the ways and the technologies of public-making and public-spaces-making in KDTMs of Hanoi. Win/loss and the relationship of the three most important influential actors in this process (municipality, KDTM owners, inhabitants/citizens) is also considered to reconceptualize the public spaces of KDTMs in Hanoi.

This article focuses on the Rog factory in Ljubljana from the perspective of an active member of the Preserve the Rog Factory Group in 2016. It is therefore based on an understanding that has been formed on the basis of collective action, endless group discussions and first-hand experiences of cornucopia. More than the internal dynamics of the community, it is mainly focused on the relationship of the exterior to the building and the Rog community, as well as the context of the unwillingness of the municipal authorities to deal with the organic growth of the city. It explicitly refers to and recalls texts that have already been written, which toot the same horn.
