The global pandemic and subsequent quarantine measures and restrictions have posed an array of challenges to the structure and procedure of university summative assessment process. Qualification assessment for Foreign Languages major programs is a strict regimen that involves different stages (oral and written exams, final project viva, internal and external review). This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the practices of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University (Kyiv, Ukraine) and International Business School (Hyderabad, India) digital qualification assessment for students of European (French, Italian, Spanish, English, German) and Asian (Mandarin, Japanese) Languages major programs, employed in the year 2020 due to quarantine measures. The survey and analysis of different ICT tools is used to translate real life qualification assessment practices into online blended format. The investigation identifies various groups of applied digital skills and soft skills, utilized through qualification assessment process by primary subjects (students). The choice of the considered cases of university Final Qualification Assessment for Foreign Languages major programs is informed by the need to estimate similar and divergent socio-cultural parameters of digital literacy development and application in multi-cultural context.  Comparison is provided for integral and differential parameters of Final Qualification Assessment in the universities of Ukraine and India under survey.

Factors of societal change, that provide the backdrop for skillset critical transformation, crucial for the COVID-19 emergency educational framework are considered. The study premise is based on identification of various competency principles, derivative of 21st century skills for university staff members and projected digital literacy requirements. A correspondence between 21st century skills framework, Competences 2020 framework and the newly devised Global Skills framework has been devised. The study objective is to critically review the applied case and best practices of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University Digital Final Qualification Assessment for students of European (French, Italian, Spanish, English, German) and Oriental (Mandarin Chinese, Japanese) Languages major programs, employed in the year 2020 due to quarantine measures. The survey and analysis of different ICT tools is used to translate real life qualification assessment practices into online blended format. The investigation also seeks to identify various groups of applied digital skills and collaboration skills, utilized through qualification assessment process by all parties (students, faculty and referees). It is determined how in the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown all elements of the Final Qualification Assessment at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University for European and Oriental Languages programs have been relegated to the digital, remote or blended format with the use of ICT tools. The qualification assessment regimen for foreign languages major programs was adapted to digital format as a framework (a legal procedure that results in the degree confirmation of a student), the string of consecutive communicative activities according to the legal procedure, the "ritual" scenario. The spread of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) made changes in education sector. The teaching and learning process change from blended learning into fully online learning. All the instructions are conducted fully online even the assessment, the important role in teaching and learning process, both the formative and summative assessment. The design of this study was Basic Interpretative Study. This study aimed to investigate the methods used by teachers in conducting the assessment as well as the challenges in doing assessment in fully online learning situation. High School English teachers were chosen to be the subject of this study. The results showed that teachers used E-portfolios, Self-assessment, and teachers’ feedback as the formative assessment and final test and final project as the summative assessment. However, teachers also found some difficulties in doing assessment in today’s online learning. Thus teacher were expected to enrich their assessment and digital literacy by joining seminar(s) or training(s).


The article deals with the methodological issue of building soft skills in the context of teaching modern foreign languages to students of higher institutions. The analysis of the available scientific and methodological research works devoted to the problem of developing students’ soft skills, especially in the process of teaching foreign languages, reveals that even though soft skills are crucial for securing employment of graduates they are still underdeveloped in the system of higher education, which results in a growing need for institutions of higher education to address the defined gap. The paper suggests some ways capable of bridging the gap and fostering the development of personal and interpersonal XXI century skills in the process of teaching foreign languages. It focuses on intra-curricular approaches to classroom management (e.g., pairing or grouping students) and methods and content of classroom activities (case study, debates, discussions, project-based learning, etc.), which have the potential to equip students with the core skills through real-life scenarios and different learning experiences. The author emphasizes that speaking and listening activities, being undoubtedly highly beneficial for soft skills development, are not the only ones that can be used to enhance learners’ soft skills. Students’ soft skills can be significantly improved while reading or writing, so the key point is to organically integrate diverse activities and teaching strategies. Therefore, before planning a class, teachers have to understand how soft skills are developed, choose what soft skills they want their students to learn, and select corresponding instructional methods and tools to model a situation in which soft skills could be naturally acquired. Particular emphasis is also placed on the question of how and what soft skills can be developed during self-assessment or peer-assessment practices. The article finishes with a few recommendations regarding possible aspects of further research.

In this study, we explore the effect of diversity among people who share a story about a scientific discovery, on the recipient’s credibility assessment regarding that story. The data used in this study were gathered in two phases. Initial data were collected through the Twitter application program interface. The data were then used in an experimental setting: We manipulated the level of diversity of real-life Twitter followings, supposedly retweeting a story to our participants ( n = 274). Each of our participants was then asked to complete a paper-based survey. Our findings show that social diversity can enhance the perceived credibility of a shared item. This effect is amplified among individuals with high digital literacy, as well as individuals with high need for cognition. The study offers a deeper understanding of credibility assessment mechanisms within Twitter and other social networking sites.

AbstractLearning is a complex phenomenon. Contemporary theories of education underline active participation of learners in their learning processes. One of the key arguments supporting this approach is the learner’s simultaneous and unconscious development of their ability of “learning to learn”. This ability belongs to the soft skills highly valued by employers today.For Mathematics Education, it means that teachers have to go beyond making calculations and memorizing formulas. We have to teach the subject in its social context. When the students start understanding the relationship between real-life problems and the role of numbers and formulas for their solutions, their learning becomes a part of their tacit knowledge. Below we explain the theoretical background of our approach and provide examples of such activities.

In early 2020, the unforeseen COVID-19 has brought the art world to its knees, particularly the contemporary art scene needs viewers and feedback to survive. Artists require new channels connecting them with their audiences, while artists’ work needs to be seen and appreciated by the public to sustain its value. In the face of social distancing restrictions and limited visitors, however, many international exhibitions are forced to cancel or postponed. With less to no patronage, will the global pandemic bring the end of the art world? As the global pandemic has forced most social and cultural events moving online, the art biennials are no exception. This article examines the art biennial, the Olympics of the art world, to rediscover the meaning of ‘art’ before and after COVID-19. Integrating virtual presentation and digital campaign between the Taipei Biennial and the Shanghai Biennale, the first running art biennials across the Taiwan Strait, this article analyses and presents the art world’s potential shifts in the post-pandemic future.

ABSTRAKTujuan dilaksanakan kegiatan ini yakni untuk meningkatkan soft skill mahasiswa dalam (1) menentukan topik penelitian yang akan diajukan sebagi tugas akhir (skripsi), (2) mempermudah mahasiswa dalam menelusuri hasil penelitian relevan yang mendukung penelitiannya, (3) menghindari kegiatan plagiasi selama penyusunan hasil penelitian, dan (4) memudahkan mahasiswa dalam menulis rujukan dan menyusun daftar pustaka. Kegiatan ini diikuti sebanyak 80 mahasiswa semester akhir. Workshop merupakan metode yang ideal dilakukan oleh tim abdimas sehingga berjalan dengan lancar. Pada tahap akhir, peserta mengisi angket Skala Likert dengan 4 option untuk mengukur pemahaman dan kemampuan mahasiswa selama workshop berlangsung. Hasil angket menunjukkan sebanyak 91,27% mahasiswa sudah paham terhadap strategi penyusunan dan menyelesiakan tugas akhir, sedangkan sisanya sebesar 8,73% belum paham pada bagian menentukan uji statistik yang digunakan untuk menjawab hipotesis penelitian. Kata kunci: soft skill mahasiswa; referensi berbasis digital; penyusunan skripsi. ABSTRACTThe purpose of this activity is to improve student soft skills in (1) determining research topics to be submitted as a final project (thesis), (2) making it easier for students to trace relevant research results that support their research, (3) avoiding plagiarism activities during the preparation of results research, and (4) make it easier for students to write references and compile bibliography. This activity was attended by 80 final semester students. The workshop is an ideal method carried out by the Abdimas team so that it runs smoothly. In the final stage, participants filled out a Likert Scale questionnaire with four options to measure students' understanding and ability during the workshop. The results of the questionnaire showed as much as 91.27% of students had understood the strategy of preparing and completing the final project, while the remaining 8.73% did not understand the part of determining the statistical test used to answer the research hypothesis. Keywords: student soft skills; digital based reference; thesis compilation.

The aim of this paper is to show how politics, culture and ethnicity interweave in the context of the Rushdie Affair in both the real‑life dimension of the historical events taking place in the late 1980s, as well as the literary dimension of the novel by Hanif Kureishi entitled The Black Album. The paper briefly outlines the Rushdie Affair as it unfolded in the British public sphere with particular emphasis placed on the process of consolidation of the Muslim identity among the representatives of different ethnic groups in Great Britain in the political and cultural context of the event which is deemed to be defining from the point of view of British Muslims. The author of the paper presents the profile of Hanif Kureishi, to indicate why he is ideally positioned to look critically at both sides of the conflict. The paper analyses the novel itself insofar as it examines the implications of the Rushdie Affair depicted in The Black Album, the reactions of the second‑generation immigrants of Pakistani descent in the face of the controversy, the influence this event exerted on the process of their searching for identity as well as their integration into British society. Two opposing identity options taken up by the protagonists of The Black Album are analysed by the author of the paper.

This article considers the presence of Persian within the educational system of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the westernmost frontier of the ‘Persianate world’, between the 1860s and the first decade of 1900. Based on a survey of primary sources, such as the first journals introduced in Bosnia by the Ottoman administration, I show that the introduction of new educational establishments in the 1860s and 1870s brought a mass expansion of the teaching of Persian in Bosnia. Even after the Austro-Hungarian occupation of 1878, Persian continued to be taught in old and some newly founded schools. However, the following decades saw a lively debate on the teaching of Persian, highlighting the redundancy of this language in a new social and cultural context. As a result, Persian was completely removed from Bosnian schools at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to presenting new knowledge about the spread of Persian in the Balkans, and the instruction of foreign languages in the Ottoman Empire, I intend to demonstrate here that a similar process of withdrawing and removing Persian from the educational system was occurring in Habsburg Bosnia simultaneously with the decline of Persian in British India.

This chapter examines how international students use experiential learning to improve their Chinese language skills through cultural immersion in China. This experiential learning mobilizes them to practice their Chinese communication skills in authentic context and in real use. Furthermore, they immerse themselves in the cultural context, reflecting on language and cultural differences, appreciating cultural diversities, and improving communicative competence. Using a qualitative method, the researcher collected data from various sources about six international students from five countries. The subjects' real-life experiences mirror their daily activities. Using Nvivo 11 as a tool, the researcher critically analyzed data, categorized contents into emerging themes. The project outcomes are useful for international students currently studying in China to reflect on their past experiences and are also beneficial to those who want to join study abroad and mobility programs, better prepare themselves for language learning and cultural immersion in China in the future.
