The education sector is truly a labor-intensive industry. A large chunk of the financial cost for managing this industry is the workforce, that is, salaries for the teachers.  The absenteeism of teachers, whether due to absence from the school or occupied with other duties, causes a disruption in the teaching and learning process.  Classroom productivity is affected because instruction cannot take place and this will give rise to the students to experience an adverse economic impact.  This financial loss to students can be estimated based on the salaries received by teachers.  Two schools, a primary and a secondary school, are used for the pilot study.  This case study involved 112 teachers from a primary school and 75 teachers from a high school in Kuala Lumpur. Data collected, over a period of one year, include attendance records, teacher movement records and medical appointment letters. On average, teachers who were absent from school or the classroom comprised10% of the school year. 50% of the teacher absenteeism was due to personal reasons, and 50% was due to work duties. The financiallossto students due to teacher absenteeism is estimated to be equal to that of the teacher’s average monthly salary. The total costs to both schools were calculated to be more than half a million Malaysian Ringgit for an academic year of schooling.  This amount is enough to pay the annual salaries of almost seven teachers for each school.  Instructional time lost needs to be prevented as this means high financial costs and an adverse impact on student learning.  It also indicates the inefficient use and management of economic resources.  However, the findings based on one case study alone are insufficient tojustify for an immediate change in the education policies.  Further in-depth study involving more samples and more comprehensive research needs to be carried out to obtain a better picture.

The knowledge of Qiraat is seen to have begun to grow nowadays, especially since there are schools that offer study programs related to it. However, the level of mastery of this study is still lacking. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze factors that influence the mastery of the knowledge of Qiraat at Sultan Ismail Petra International Islamic College (KIAS). This study is a quantitative pilot study that uses a set of questionnaires as an instrument to obtain data and SPSS 21.0 is used to analyse the data. A sample of 30 students who studied Diploma Qiraat and Taranum program at Sultan Ismail Petra International Islamic College (KIAS) from 2018 to 2020. A total of 15 items include theory and practical are presented in the questionnaire. The study found that the level of mastery of students related to the study of the knowledge of Qiraat is at a moderate level. This finding is supported by data obtained from theory and practical. Therefore, factors of improving the teaching and learning process in theory and practical should be enhanced so that the mastery of the knowledge of Qiraat among students can be improved to a better level.

The teaching and learning (T&L) of Islamic Education which are comprised of theory and practical, often involves the use of teaching aids (TAs). In general, this article discusses the use of TAs among Smart School Islamic Education Teacher in T&L. This article aims to explore the types of TAs used by the Islamic Education Teacher (IET), the resources to obtain teaching aids, and IETs’ strategies to enhance their knowledge of the TAs. This pilot study uses case study design with in-depth interview instrument to accumulate data from IET, IETs’ colleague and IETs’ supervisor. Interview data are analyzed using NVivo software version 7.0 to develop themes and to set up matrix tables. The result shows that frequently-used teaching aids are realia for non-computer-based teaching and CDs for computer-based teaching. IETs’ main sources to obtain TAs are the school surau and the internet. IET increase their knowledge about TAs through the internet as well as attending courses. The implication of this study is that the applicability and accessibility aspects of the TAs should be emphasized among IET in order to optimize the application of the TAs.

This multi-methods, descriptive case study examines attitudes and practices of classroom-based iPad use. The site is one inner-city, urban, publicly funded school, focused on two iPad-infused classrooms (Grade 2/3 and Grade 4/5). Data were collected from 5 educators and 35 students to investigate two research questions: How are iPads being utilized in student instruction? How do educators and students perceive the value of using iPads in the classroom? For this study, we analyzed the transcript of a focus group with five educators, data from 10 days of structured student observations, and the results from 35 student questionnaires. Five themes emerged from the focus group; the strongest related to pedagogical practices. Data related to student perceptions indicated a positive attitude toward iPads. They enjoyed iPad use, were concerned about equity issues, had high self-ratings about related skills, felt they used it most often in Mathematics, and indicated various preferred applications. Overall, iPads were used in 31.7% of observed instructional time, 94.7% of which was facilitated by classroom teachers. Of this iPad- based instructional time, 72.5% was for individualized teaching, typically in language and/or mathematics instruction. Our analysis culminates in recommendations for school leadership such as teaching prerequisite skills and providing ongoing technological supports.
