AbstractAlthough being an important teaching resource, the use of technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed great challenges in education, especially in higher education. Therefore, this paper aims at analyzing the student’s experience regarding to use of technologies in remote higher education in times of COVID-19 pandemic. The selected study area comprises the Cariri Metropolitan Region (RMCariri), on south of Ceará state, more specifically the urban agglomeration composed of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha municipalities (CRAJUBAR). As methodology, a bibliographic research was performed on the subject and the application of a semi structured questionnaire to the students of undergraduate level courses from Higher Education Institutions of CRAJUBAR. From the results analysis, one may notice that, although being a tool facilitated by the use of technologies, and which allowed the education continuity in a remote way during the pandemic, the remote higher education does not contemplate all the students. The study showed the main difficulties faced by students in this period and highlighted the lack of investments on the universities in order to implement the remote education, especially the public ones, which directly affected the students’ learning process, besides reflecting the existing social inequality of Brazil. Keywords: COVID-19. Cariri Region. Learning. Technologies.

ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Annette Quinto Romani: Overdoing the Right Thing – Advantaged Parents and Underweight Overweight is an important topic in the public debate, while underweight is an often ignored problem. The purpose of this article is to shed light on underweight in a sociological perspective focusing on both individual and structural perspectives. To illustrate this I use data from Project 3A, which includes 1.092 schoolchildren in the Municipality of Aalborg. The study was conducted in 2008-2011, where data was collected in 2008 when the schoolchildren attended 6th grade and in 2010 when they attended 8th grade. The results indicate that girls with mothers having a higher education are more likely to be underweight as opposed to girls with lower educated mothers. In addition, the results indicate that the likelihood of underweight to some extend increased among the schoolchildren who were exposed to an intervention that increased their own health knowledge, and to a behavioral altering intervention. Social inequality in weight was increased by the intervention that increases own health knowledge. Key words: Underweight, social inequality, self-perceived weight, issue of elite.

The COVID-19 is an ongoing global pandemic, caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in the abrupt shutting of all the educational institutions (schools, colleges, and universities) in India. This resulted in dramatic changes in the education system with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Online learning is a competent and contactless method of teaching to remotely located students. Geography is a branch of science which deals with the study of the earth’s surface and the relationships between people and their environment. Geographers explore both the physical properties of the earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. The subject matter of Geography containing different theory papers and practical papers cannot just be effectively taught in a classroom or laboratory but best enlightened on the field. For the effective learning process in the subject of Geography, students require on-ground observations, laboratory analysis, projects and dissertations, field surveying, computer mapping and analysis, field trips and excursions, etc. It helps the budding Geographers to acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills. But the COVID-19 pandemic situation confronted the education system, forcing the educators in the field of Geography to shift to an online mode of teaching, leaving them with no option. During this crisis, the educators have given their best in teaching the subject matter of Geography to the students by using various open-source teaching aids by overcoming the issues like lack of training and professional technical support. This altered the traditional teaching and learning process in the field of Geography, which essentially affects the students of Geography. Thus, a case study was undertaken to assess the online teaching in the subject of Geography at the undergraduate level during the academic year 2020-21 from the student’s perspective.

The use of electronic slide presentations (ESP), usually through PowerPoint or Prezi software, has become widespread in higher education and is part of the expectations and perceptions of both teachers and students of how a successful and quality class should be. Is this dissemination of ESP use justified by the pedagogical quality fostered in learning? While its use can help focus attention on the content of the subject during classes, there are also limitations in this process, both in the dimension of teaching, by the teacher, and in the dimension of learning, by the student. This paper seeks to provide a contribution to the debate on this topic, and the advantages and limitations in using ESP. It is concluded that there is a need, on the one hand, to define the use of ESP, by assaying their application, as well as, on the other hand, to simultaneously develop other pedagogical ways of teaching, whose articulation can make the student’s role more active and pertinent, and enable the feedback to the student on the part of the teacher, so that it may be possible to regulate the teaching and learning process in a timely manner.

Higher education practices in Nepal have been playing an important role to train and develop pre-service school teachers. This paper critically reflects on the curricular and pedagogical practices of mathematics education based on the first author's experiences of learning at the undergraduate level from the perspective of mathematics curriculum images and pedagogical implications. Subscribing to autoethnography as a research methodology, we analysed the first author's experiences as an undergraduate student in one of the public campuses in Nepal which point to two major images of mathematics curriculum: curriculum as a prescription and curriculum as a cultural reproduction. Considering Habermasian Knowledge Constitutive Interest as a theoretical referent, the paper concludes that the transformation of curricular and pedagogical practices in teacher education is essential. The transformative practice in teacher education is insightful to improve pre-service and in-service school teachers' pedagogical and content knowledge in Nepal.

The Philosophy and Contemporary Issues (FIS) course was introduced for undergraduate level study in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) starting from the September 2019 intake. An initiative of Dr. Maszlee Malik, the Minister of Education Malaysia during that period, the course is aimed at creating a generation of scholars capable of critical and rational thought, able to engage in analytical and systematic discourse, and guided by wisdom and prudence when faced with diverse contemporary ideology challenges. This course is compulsory for all HEI students including those in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Philosophy in general is perceived as a difficult subject to comprehend. Since FIS is a new course, this study is relevant to examine students’ understanding of the subject matter as taught in UMS specifically those in the 2020/2021 intake. Utilising a quantitative approach, the aspect of student understanding in FIS was analysed in a descriptive manner based on online questionnaire instruments. Findings showed UMS undergraduates had a relatively high and encouraging level of understanding in FIS. This proves that the notion of courses related to philosophy being difficult and uninteresting was not wholly accurate. The FIS course could be fine-tuned to ensure it is able to continue its role as a medium for the inculcation of new thought culture among undergraduates.

Plato's view that we should be ruled by philosophers has never really caught on in Britain. Indeed, in recent years, political attitudes to the study of philosophy have resulted in the closure of departments of philosophy in our universities, so that the subject is less studied at undergraduate level than it was 20 or 30 years ago. So it is surprising that the way our generation thinks about education, genetic experimentation, broadcasting, and some of the other most contentious issues of our time should have been so influenced by a professional philosopher whose working life has never taken her out of Oxford and Cambridge.Mary Warnock has served as chairman of government committees on special education, on animal experimentation, on human fertilisation, and on teaching quality. Further, the recommendations of the committees she has chaired have usually been rapidly adopted by the government of the time and then translated into legislation with bipartisan support and considerable speed. The fate of her reports firmly refutes the commonly held view that governments set up committees to avoid making difficult decisions and then leave their weighty conclusions to sit on shelves, gathering dust until the topics in question have lost the interest of the public.

This paper presents a protocol through which it is intended to know the perception that students of a University Degree have of a specific subject. Once this perception is known, decisions can be made and actions taken to improve the teaching-learning process. Although the protocol is presented focused on a public higher education organization, and a specific degree and subject, this protocol can be applicable without requiring too many adaptations, to any subject and degree.

There can be a range of reasons to record lectures or presentations, from the creation of resources to meeting the needs of distant students. Of course recordings are one-way. The information in them flows from the recorded file to students and student interaction with recordings is generally limited to interacting with the controls of the player, that is, they can pause, stop, and replay the recording in part or in its entirety. It can be argued that this interaction adds another level of access to educational presentations. While this low level of interaction can have positive educational outcomes it cannot be equated with interactions between students and teachers. Clearly the person-to-person interactions have the potential for far greater educational outcomes ranging from the answering of questions to the exploration and extension of the subject area. In cases where students are distant from teachers and interact with recorded resources other technologies and techniques are need to provide viable two-way communications channels between them. All learning technologies impose on teaching and learning activities and recordings of presentations are no exception. It is argued that recordings by themselves seldom, if ever, are sufficient for effective and efficient learning in higher education. However, it is suggested that recordings when used in conjunction with other learning technologies and techniques can be a fundamental part of the learning experience.
