Introduction: Children in a foster family have a difficult life situation. This is a challenge for both foster parents and teachers. Cooperation based on shared commitment and understanding gives the child a chance to gain positive life experiences. The acquired knowledge and skills can be a resource that will allow the child to change the (often negative) pattern of life of the biological family they come from. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was understanding how foster parents perceive their cooperation with the school their children attend. Method: The authors applied the interpretive paradigm, the phenomenography method in the study. To collect the data, focus interviews were conducted in three groups of foster parents. In total, 21 parents took part in the study. Results: Foster parents notice the division of responsibility in the process of educating children brought up in their families. Their role is to select an institution, start cooperation, help the child learn and accompany rehabilitation, inform the school staff about the specificity of the child’s functioning, and be the advocate for the child. The role of the staff side, according to parents, is to implement the recommendations of specialists, cooperate with parents, set adequate requirements for the child, and present a friendly attitude towards the child and the foster family. Conclusions: Based on the research results, guidelines for the good cooperation of foster parents with the school were formulated. It is important for teachers to understand the specific situation of not only the child (their life experiences, developmental disorders), but also the foster parent, as well as appreciate their commitment to the child. It would be important to create a support system.

The article aims at the analysis of children’s perception of the changes in their lives due to the loss of a biological family and moving to a foster family. We analyze how children experience and subjectively perceive their foster family life experience. On the base of children biographies we build typical life trajectories, which are shaped in institutional, interpersonal and individual level. Social and political context of the foster children autobiographies are set by the reform of deinstitutionalization of child welfare system implemented in Russia in the 2010s. The methodological framework used is the new sociology of childhood, which sees childhood as a socio-historical construct, insists on studying the subjective world of children and taking them as everyday experts. As an empirical material we analyse 253 autobiographies written by foster children and sent to a diary context “Our Stories” (Elena and Gennagy Timchenko Foundation, 2015–2017). The article presents typical biographical trajectories of foster children as stages of transition to adulthood, as well as barriers that they face in this process and resources that are made available to them by the family. The general conclusion of the article is the fact that the biographical trajectories of the transition, which are accessible for foster children are complex, diverse, and individualized. Biographies are presented by their authors not only as a result of external factors, but also as a result of their own actions, as well as the efforts of their foster parents to overcome social stigmatization.

Children and youth from foster families more often – in comparison to general population – have disabilities, emotional and behavioural disorders (Minnisi in. 2006). Also, in their history of life they often experienced abuse and/or neglect, which may influence their later achievements (Kolankiewicz 2009; Bartnikowska, Ćwirynkało 2016). Foster parents often deal with challenges connected to raising their children. The paper is a research report in which the authors investigate the perceptions of foster parents concerning their cooperation with teachers and school personnel. In order to achieve this aim an interpretivist paradigm and phenomenographic method (Paulston 1993) was applied. Three focus group interviews were conducted with 21 foster parents of children and youth at school age. A qualitative analysis (Charmaz 2009) resulted in the identification of two thematic areas of parents’ perceptions of: (1) division of responsibility (perception of the role of a foster parent and school personnel in the process of their children’s education), (2) positive and negative aspects of foster parents’ experiences in the cooperation with school (personal and organizational level). Based on the results, recommendations on how to improve the cooperation between school and foster parents are proposed.

This article attempts to present a comparative study of the role of two twentieth-century English translations of the Qur'an: cAbdullah Yūsuf cAlī's The Meaning of the Glorious Qur'ān and Muḥammad Asad's The Message of the Qur'ān. No two men could have been more different in their background, social and political milieu and life experiences than Yūsuf cAlī and Asad. Yūsuf 'Alī was born and raised in British India and had a brilliant but traditional middle-class academic career. Asad traversed a vast cultural and geographical terrain: from a highly-disciplined childhood in Europe to the deserts of Arabia. Both men lived ‘intensely’ and with deep spiritual yearning. At some time in each of their lives they decided to embark upon the translation of the Qur'an. Their efforts have provided us with two incredibly rich monumental works, which both reflect their own unique approaches and the effects of the times and circumstances in which they lived. A comparative study of these two translations can provide rich insights into the exegesis and the phenomenon of human understanding of the divine text.

Background: Widespread social paradigms on which the status variances are grounded in any society, gender plays pivotal role in manifestation of mental health problems (Rutter, 2007). A hefty volume of research has addressed the issue in adults nonetheless, little is vividly known about the role of gender in adolescent psychopathology. Sample: A sample of 240 adolescents (125 boys, 115 girls) aging 12-18 years was amassed from various secondary schools of Islamabad with the approval of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), relevant authorities of the schools and the adolescents themselves. Instruments: Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (Taylor & Spence, 1953) and Children’s Negative Cognitive Errors Questionnaire (CNCEQ) by Leitenberg et al., (1986) were applied in present study. Results: Multiple regression analysis revealed that cognitive errors jointly accounted for 78% of variance in predicting anxiety among adolescents. Findings also exhibited that gender significantly moderated the relationship between cognitive errors and adolescent anxiety. Implications of the findings are discoursed for future research and clinical practice.

This paper reports part of an ongoing study exploring the information behaviour of New Zealand men during periods of diminished health and wellbeing. Focus groups were used for this iteration of the study. Results indicate that New Zealand men face both personal and structural constraints to their information-seeking during periods when their health and wellbeing may be compromised. This study highlights that service providers need to develop more effective information delivery mechanisms and support services for men. These services need to be appealing to men and reflect men’s information seeking preferences. The role of LIS professionals in supporting this endeavour is discussed.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with the pathological hallmark of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites composed of α-synuclein. The SNP rs591323 is one of the risk loci located near the FGF20 gene that has been implicated in PD. The variation of FGF20 in the 3′ untranslated region was shown to increase α-synuclein expression. We examined the association of rs591323 with the risk of PD in a Taiwanese population and conducted a meta-analysis, including our study and two other studies from China, to further confirm the role of this SNP in Taiwanese/Chinese populations. A total of 586 patients with PD and 586 health controls (HCs) were included in our study. We found that the minor allele (A) and the AA + GA genotype under the dominant model are significantly less frequent in PD than in controls. The meta-analysis consisted of 1950 patients with PD and 2073 healthy controls from three studies. There was significant association between rs591323 and the risk of PD in the additive (Z = −3.96; p < 0.0001) and the dominant models (Z = −4.01; p < 0.0001). Our study results and the meta-analysis support the possible protective role of the rs591323 A allele in PD in Taiwanese/Chinese populations.

AbstractEnvironmental protection is of vital importance and needs to be considered in the context of business strategies, including companies’ reporting decisions. This paper aims to investigate the importance of stakeholders for environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) and the significance of different types of environmental KPIs to various stakeholders. The study is based on a content analysis of the disclosures provided by large public interest companies operating in Poland. The data were processed to produce descriptive statistics as well as classification and regression trees (C&RTs). According to the study results, the sample companies provide a variety of environmental indicators, with a total of 735 KPIs identified. The research confirms the importance of stakeholders interested in environmental issues for corporate decisions regarding environmental KPI disclosure. The study contributes to the extant literature by providing new insights into the importance of different stakeholder groups for the disclosure of environmental KPIs. It may serve as an incentive for standard setters and practitioners to take a proactive approach in further developing and improving environment-related reporting regulations.
