This paper presents the performance of short carbon fibre (CF) reinforced and filled with sawdust (SD) hybrid epoxy composites were evaluated. The results showed that hybridisation of carbon fibre and sawdust was in similarity to EP/CF hybrid composites. Effect of fibre orientation in matrix and the analysis and fracture surface was undertaken. The mechanical properties of injection moulded, chopped carbon fibre/sawdust/epoxy hybrid composites were investigated by considering the effect of hybridisation by these two fillers. It was observed that the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the filled epoxy were higher than those of unfilled epoxy. The effect of filler on epoxy matrix subjected to the tensile strength and modulus was studied and compared with the rule of hybrid mixtures. The effect of filler on epoxy matrix subjected to the tensile strength and modulus was studied and compared with the rule of mixture. The actual results are marginally low as compared with the values obtained by the rule of hybrid mixtures (RoHM).

Abstract The presented work describes the results of examination of the mechanical properties of castings made either of AlSi9Mg alloy matrix composite reinforced with short carbon fibre or of the pure AlSi9Mg alloy. The tensile strength, the yield strength, Young’s modulus, and the unit elongation were examined both for initial castings and for castings made of the remelted composite or AlSi9Mg alloy. After preparing metallographic specimens, the structure of the remelted materials was assessed. A few non-metallic inclusions were observed in the structure of the remelted composite, not occurring in the initial castings. Mechanical testing revealed that all the examined properties of the initial composite material exceed those of the non-reinforced matrix. A decrease in mechanical properties was stated both for the metal matrix and for the composite after the remelting process, but this decrease was so slight that it either does not preclude them from further use or does not restrict the range of their application.

Background: Short carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composites have many advantages such as high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, low cost, short fabrication time and easy manufacturing. Researches on the mechanical performance of the composites are mainly carried out by means of experimental techniques and numerical calculation. Objective: The study aims to report the latest progress in the studies of mechanical properties of short carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composites. Methods: Based on recently published patents and journal papers, the experimental studies of short carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composites are reviewed and the effects of short carbon fibre on the mechanical properties of the composites are discussed. Numerical studies using representative volume element in simulating macroscopic mechanical properties of the short fibre reinforced composites are also reviewed. Finally, future research of short carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composites is proposed. Results: Experimental techniques, experimental results and numerical simulating methods are discussed. Conclusion: Mechanical properties of epoxy can be improved by adding short carbon fibres. Fiber surface treatment and matrix modification are effective in enhancing interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix, and as a result, better mechanical performance is achieved. Compared to the studies on equivalent mechanical properties of the composites, researches on the micro-mechanism of interaction between fiber and matrix are still in infancy due to the complexity of both the internal structure and reinforcing mechanism.

Abstract The paper constitutes the culmination of the foregoing investigations concerning the influence of short carbon fibre on the enhancement of AlMg10 alloy properties. The presented work brings forward the results of examinations of mechanical and tribological properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on this alloy. Composites were produced by two methods: either by gravity casting or by squeeze casting in semi-solid state of a composite suspension previously obtained through mixing of its components. The volume fraction of the reinforcing phase varied and took the value of 5, or 10, or finally 15 vol. %. Specimens cut out of the experimental castings were examined with respect both to their mechanical properties, i.e. the tensile strength and unit elongation, and to their tribological behaviour. A series of examinations of the mechanical properties proved a slight increase in tensile strength and a minor decrease in unit elongation of the examined composite materials both for gravity cast and squeeze cast specimens, as compared with the properties of pure matrix alloy. The introduction of short carbon fibre into the matrix alloy resulted also in the increased abrasive wear resistance of the examined composites in comparison to the non-reinforced matrix.

Short carbon fibre (CF) and sawdust (SD) were dispersed in to the epoxy (EP) matrix in order to manufacture polymer hybrid composites using compression moulding technique. The mechanical properties of flexural properties of hybrid, compression moulded, chopped CF/SD/epoxy composites have been investigated taking into account the effect of hybridization by these two fillers. Hybridization with small amounts of SD makes these CF composites more suitable for technical applications. The simultaneous compounding of epoxy with two fillers was done to obtain a hybrid composite. This system is expected to have considerable mechanical properties, good surface finish and low cost. It has been found that the tensile properties of filled epoxy were higher than unfilled epoxy. By incorporating up to 30% (by mass) Carbon fiber (CF) and 10% sawdust (SD) namely S3 sample flexural strength was increased by 12.5%. Thus it is shown that the durability of CF/SD filled epoxy composites can be enhanced by hybridization with small amount of CF. The hybrid effects of the flexural strength and modulus were studied by the rule of hybrid mixture.

AbstractThis investigation is carried out to understand the effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties of hybrid phenol formaldehyde (PF) composite fabricated with Areca Fine Fibres (AFFs) and Calotropis Gigantea Fibre (CGF). Hybrid CGF/AFF/PF composites were manufactured using the hand layup technique at varying weight percentages of fibre reinforcement (25, 35 and 45%). Hybrid composite having 35 wt.% showed better mechanical properties (tensile strength ca. 59 MPa, flexural strength ca. 73 MPa and impact strength 1.43 kJ/m2) under wet and dry conditions as compared to the other hybrid composites. In general, the inclusion of the fibres enhanced the mechanical properties of neat PF. Increase in the fibre content increased the water absorption, however, after 120 h of immersion, all the composites attained an equilibrium state.

Graphite reinforced bio-based epoxy composites with different particulate fractions of graphite were investigated for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus and elongation at break. The graphite content was varied from 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 25 wt.%, 30 wt.% by weight percent in the composites. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the composites mainly depend on dispersion condition of the treated graphite filler, aggregate structure and strong interfacial bonding between treated graphite in the bio-based epoxy matrix. The composites showed improved tensile strength and elastic modulus with increase treated graphite weight loading. This also revealed the composites with increasing filler content was decreasing the elongation at break.

Newer manufacturing techniques were invented and introduced during the last few decades; some of them were increasingly popular due to their enhanced advantages and ease of manufacturing over the conventional processes. Polymer composite material such as glass, carbon and Kevlar fiber reinforced composite are popular in high performance and light weight applications such as aerospace and automobile fields. This research has been done by reinforcing the matrix (epoxy) resin with two kinds of the reinforcement fibers. One weight fractions were used (20%) wt., Epoxy reinforced with chopped carbon fiber and second reinforcement was epoxy reinforced with hybrid reinforcements Kevlar fiber and improved one was the three laminates Kevlar fiber and chopped carbon fibers reinforced epoxy resin. After preparation of composite materials some of the mechanical properties have been studied. Four different fiber loading, i.e., 0 wt. %, 20wt. % CCF, 20wt. % SKF, AND 20wt. %CCF + 20wt. % SKF were taken for evaluating the above said properties. The thermal and mechanical properties, i.e., hardness load, impact strength, flexural strength (bending load), and thermal conductivity are determined to represent the behaviour of composite structures with that of fibers loading. The results show that with the increase in fiber loading the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites increases as compared to short carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites except in case of hardness, short carbon fiber reinforced composites shows better results. Similarly, flexural strength test, Impact test, and Brinell hardness test the results show the flexural strength, impact strength of the hybrid composites values were increased with existence of Kevlar fibers, while the hardness was decrease. But the reinforcement with carbon fibers increases the hardness and decreases other tests.
