Background: Liver is a site for plethora of diseases among which many become symptomatic while others usually either go undiagnosed or are concealed by other prominent diseases. As said about liver to be the custodian of milieu interior most of the silent liver diseases are diagnosed only on autopsy examination. Aims and objectives was to study various pathological lesions of liver in medicolegal and clinical autopsy cases and to corelate liver diseases with age and sex. Retrospective cross-sectional observational study of 649 medicolegal and clinical autopsies conducted within 2 years of duration (January 2017 to December 2018).Methods: Out of all 649 autopsies conducted in our hospital all liver specimens along with other organs viscera were collected and formalin fixed. After gross examination sections from the liver were submitted for tissue processing and then stained with haematoxylin and eosin stain. Results: The most common pathology found in our study was fatty change (11.1%) followed by venous congestion (4.3%), hepatitis (3.5%), cirrhosis (2.2%), tuberculosis/ granulomatous hepatitis (0.6%), chronic hepatitis (0.3%), malignancy (1%), miscellaneous (2%) and normal (72.4%). Maximum cases were in 21-30 years of age group with male preponderance. Conclusions: Autopsy examination of liver is an effective tool to identify silent liver diseases. Use of autopsy findings along with other investigative techniques.

Objectives: Determine the frequency of fungal infections in nasal polypi. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Histopathology Department at Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore. Period: Six months from 12/2/2015 to 12/8/2015. Material & Methods: Two hundred surgical resections/biopsies using 95% confidence level, with 7% margin of error were collected. Formalin fixed specimens of patients of both genders and 10- 60 years of age with nasal polyps received after surgical procedure in department of ENT. Grossing and processing was done. Hematoxyin & Eosin stained sections were examined by two consultant Histopathologists independently. The presence of fungal hyphae was confirmed by PAS and Silver stains. The study was approved by College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan. All the data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Results: Out of 200 patients all the patients showed the prescence of inflammatory cells in polyps (100%) with predominantly eosinophils in their submucosa (82%). Fungus was present in 48 cases (24%) most of them were in the age group of 42-57 years (13%) and 31(15.5%) patients having BMI <30 and 17(8.5%) having BMI >30 were positive for fungus.30 cases were of Aspergillus (62.5%) and rest 8 were of Mucor (37.5%). The fungus positive cases were more in males (13.5%). 160 of the cases were of unilateral polyps (80%) and 40 were of bilateral polypi (20%). Only 8% of the patients having diabetes had fungal infection. Conclusion: Hence, the frequency of fungal infection in nasal polypi is low with Aspergillus being the commonest pathogen affecting males predominantly.

Context: Hartmann’s pouch is an out-pouching of the wall of the gallbladder, at the junction of the neck of the gallbladder and the cystic duct. It may be a site where gall stone impacts, which leads to mucocele of gallbladder. So its identification is useful in delineating biliary anatomy while performing a cholecystectomy. Objective: To identify the presence of Hartmann’s pouch in human gallbladder. Study Design: A cross-sectional type of study. Place and period of study: The study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from July 2008 to June 2009. Materials: 70 postmortem gallbladder were collected from unclaimed dead bodies that were under examination in the morgue of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. Methods: Formalin fixed gallbladder was washed with plain tap water to remove excess formalin and was kept on metallic tray. On observation Hartmann’s pouch in gallbladder was detected and noted. Results: In the present study 70 cadaver’s gallbladder were observed carefully in the neck region for Hartmann’s pouch. The Hartmann’s pouch was detected in 4 cases out of 70 (5.7%). Conclusion: Further studies to find out the gross anatomy and histological study of Hartmann’s pouch is recommended. Objectives: To compare Demirjian Dental scoring method with Greulich-Pyle (GP) Skeletal method of age estimation in pubertal children. Materials and Methods: Sample of the study included 267 male healthy subjects of 11-16 years of age group.. Demirjian Scoring system was utilized to evaluate the orthopantomograms to assess their Dental age and the Hand-Wrist radiographs were analyzed to calculate the skeletal age by utilizing GP atlas. Chronological age was obtained from the date of birth of the subject .Both methods were compared with one another and with the chronological age. It was a cross-sectional study and only healthy male subjects without any clinical abnormalities were included in the study. Results: A total of 267 male subjects of 11-16 years of age group were assessed by Demirjian and Greulich Pyle Methods. Both were compared with Chronological Age. Data obtained was statistically analyzed and the Student “t” test was applied in the study population. The mean difference between Chronolgical age and dental age was 0.69years and that of chronological age and skeletal age was 0.87 years. It was observed from dental age assessment that it does not differ much from the skeletal age. Conclusion: It was concluded that Demirjian method of Age Estimation is more precise than Greulich Pyle method of Age Estimation. Furthermore both methods can be used selectively in Medicolegal cases to access bone age which can be easily correlated to chronological age.

Rotavirus is one of the leading causes of pediatric diarrhea globally. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of Rotavirus diarrhea should reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics and ultimately reduce drug resistance. Study was designed for rapid diagnosis of Rotavirus antigen in stool sample by ICT (Immunochromatographic test) as well as to observe the seasonal variation of rotavirus infection. This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of Microbiology, Dhaka Medical College from January 2011 to December 2011. Eighty stool samples were collected from Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital. All samples were tested for rotavirus antigen by ICT. Among 80 patients, 42 (52.5%) samples were positive for rotavirus antigen. Among these 42 positive samples, 30 (71.43%) were from 0-12 months of age group, 10 (23.81%) from 13 to 24 months of age group and rest 2 (4.76%) from 25 to 36 months of age group. Rotavirus Ag was detected in stool samples from January to April and another peak episode from October to December. Considering the importance of Rotavirus associated diarrhea, rapid detection of Rotavirus infection in human is substantially needed and should be routinely practiced.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjmm.v6i1.19354 Bangladesh J Med Microbiol 2012; 06(01): 11-13
