Background: Migraine is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). There are evidences that components of MetS are more prevalent among migraine patients than non migraineurs. Since both migraine and MetS are associated with a high risk of cardiovascular events, it is likely that the parameters of MetS increase the occurrence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in migraineurs. The present research project was conducted for the purpose of investigating the relationship between MetS parameters and different items of migraine headaches. Methods: This descriptive-analytical, cross-sectional study was performed on 240 migraineurs [according to International Headache Society (HIS) II criteria] within the 17+ age range. The participants were selected via consecutive and convenience sampling method. The evaluated parameters for each subject included 2 arms: migraine characteristics (intensity, frequency of attacks, subtype, duration, and treatment regimen) and indices of MetS according to the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP-III) report criteria [high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (‎HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), height, waist circumference (WC), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), and body mass index (BMI)]. All data were analyzed in SPSS software. Results: Total prevalence of MetS was 16.25% (39 patients). There was a statistically meaningful relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and gender (P = 0.021), hypertriglyceridemia and prophylactic antimigraine regimen (P = 0.022), hyperglycemia and age group (P = 0.010), hyperglycemia and the intensity of headache (P = 0.048), hyperglycemia and prophylactic treatment (P = 0.001), systolic hypertension and migraine subtype (P = 0.004), systolic hypertension and the duration of migraine disease (P = 0.005), diastolic hypertension and migraine subtype (P = 0.002), WC and gender (P = 0.001), WC and the intensity of headache (P = 0.028), WC and prophylactic medication (P = 0.017), HDL and gender (P = 0.001), HDL and the prophylactic regimen (P = 0.023), and MetS and gender (P = 0.005). The prevalence of MetS was increased with increase in the severity of migraine headache. Conclusion: Due to the relative increase in the prevalence of MetS in patients with more severe migraine, an evaluation of the mechanisms of MetS is recommended in this population.

Abstract Background Understanding the relationship between breastfeeding (BF) and metabolic syndrome (Mets) is important for maternal long-term health benefits and disease prevention. This study aimed to examine the association between BF and Mets and its components among postmenopausal parous Korean women. Methods This cross-sectional study on 10,356 Korean women used nationally representative data from the KNHANES from 2010 to 2016. Anthropometric, laboratory data and manual BP were measured. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association of BF with Mets and its components after adjusting for potential confounding variables. A p-value < 0.05 was to be considered statistically significant. Results Mets was present in 42% of the study participants. The BF group had low household income and education level. The prevalence of Mets in the BF group was higher than that in the non-BF group (42.69% vs. 34.76%, p <  0.001). BF was associated with increased risk of Mets (odds ratio [OR]: 1.4, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18–1.65, p <  0.001). The BF group was at higher risks for diabetes (OR: 1.5, 95%CI: 1.14–1.98), hypertension (OR: 1.32, 95%CI: 1.03–1.68), hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.02–1.99) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR: 1.32, 95%CI: 1.06–1.65). Conclusion In this study, BF did not affect decreasing the prevalence of Mets and its components.

Background: Recent studies have reported the epidemiological link between Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and asthma, but it has rarely been studied in Egypt. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of MS and its predictors among asthma patients in Egypt. Methods: In total, 320 patients with bronchial asthma were included. The following were assessed: spirometric evaluation, anthropometric indices, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and serum lipid profile. We analyzed the correlation between metabolic scores and patient characteristics. Predictors of MS were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of MS was 57.5% in asthma patients. For asthma patients, low High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and abdominal obesity were the commonest metabolic abnormality. Waist circumference, Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) and triglyceride correlated significantly with asthma (P ‹ 0.05). FBS and DBP were the best predictors of MS. Conclusion: MS is frequent in asthma patients in Egypt. Obesity and lipid abnormalities were the commonest metabolic abnormality. Screening of these patients for components of metabolic syndrome should be a part of routine workup.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to compare the validity of various approaches to pediatric continuous metabolic syndrome (cMetS) scores including siMS scores (2 waist/height + fasting blood glucose [FBG]/5.6 + triglycerides [TG]/1.7 + systolic blood pressure [BP]/130 + high-density lipoprotein [HDL]/1.02), Z-scores, principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods This nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted on 4200 Iranian children and adolescents aged 7–18 years. The cMetS was computed using data on HDL, cholesterol, TGs, FBG, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and waist circumference (WC). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were used to compare the performances of different cMetS scores. Results Data of 3843 participants (52.4% boys) were available for the current study. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 12.6 (3) and 12.3 (3.1) years for boys and girls, respectively. The differences in AUC values of cMetS scores were significant based on the Delong method. The AUCs (95% confidence interval [CI]) were for Z-scores, 0.94 (0.93, 0.95); first PCA, 0.91 (0.89, 0.93); sum PCA, 0.90 (0.88, 0.92), CFA, 0.79 (0.76, 0.3) and also for siMS scores 1 to 3 as 0.93 (0.91, 0.94), 0.92 (0.90, 0.93), and 0.91 (0.90, 0.93), respectively. Conclusions The results of our study indicated that the validity of all approaches for cMetS scores for predicting MetS was high. Given that the siMS scores are simple and practical, it might be used in clinical and research practice.

Little is known about the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the World’s working force. We examined the prevalence of such disease in the Company of Generation and Distribution of Energy in Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed to analyze data from employees submitted to the annual company medical check-up in 2008. Medical charts were reviewed for collection of clinical and laboratorial information.RESULTS: The total prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 48.6% (95%CI 46.0-51.2). It increased with age and reached 58.7% (95%CI 56.1-61.3) in employees older than 60 years. The age- adjusted prevalence was 38.2% (95%CI 35.7-40.7). Increased waist circumference was the most prevalent component of the syndrome (94.2%; 95%CI 92.1-95.7), followed by high blood pressure (69.3%; 95%CI 65.7-72.7). In a multivariate analysis age, sedentary lifestyle and level of uric acid were significantly associated with the metabolic syndrome.CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent in the studied working population in Rio de Janeiro. Our study will help delineating key risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome in Brazil and may help the creation of new preventive public health policies.

Abstract Background Maintaining a good level of physical fitness from engaging in regular exercise is important for the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, which components constitutive of physical fitness confer the greatest influence remains controversial. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between MetS and physical fitness components including cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, and agility and to identify which physical fitness components have the largest influence on MetS. Methods A total of 168 Japanese adult males aged 25–64 years were allocated into non-MetS, pre-MetS, and MetS groups according to the criteria recommended by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine. Anthropometric measurement of body composition by whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and measures related to MetS, including waist circumference, triglyceride level, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, blood pressure, glucose level, and physical fitness components, were assessed. For evaluation of cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, agility, and balance, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and oxygen uptake at anaerobic threshold (VO2AnT), handgrip strength and vertical jumping, trunk extension and flexion, stepping side to side, and single-leg balance task with the eyes closed were assessed, respectively. Results A progressive tendency of increasing body weight, body mass index, whole-body lean and fat mass, percentage of whole-body fat mass, trunk lean and fat mass, percentage of trunk fat mass, arm fat mass, waist circumference, triglyceride level, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and blood glucose level from the non-MetS group to the MetS group was significant (P < 0.05). Conversely, the cardiorespiratory endurance parameters VO2peak and VO2AnT and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level showed a progressively decreasing tendency across the groups (P < 0.01). In addition, a VO2peak below 29.84 ml·kg·min−1 (P = 0.028) and VO2AnT below 15.89 ml·kg·min−1 (P = 0.011) were significant risk components for pre-MetS and MetS. However, there was no significant tendency with respect to muscle strength, agility, and flexibility. Conclusion Cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly linked to metabolic syndrome among physical fitness components

Background Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of physical conditions and metabolic abnormalities, commonly occurring together, that increases an individual’s risk for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Oxidative stress is associated with diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases while the role of oxidative stress in pathogenesis of MS is not clearlydefined. Objectives The study aims to find out the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in faculty and staff members at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal and to evaluate oxidative stress levels insubjects with metabolic syndrome. Methods 118 healthy participants working at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal were selected at random for this cross-sectional study and blood samples were collected for the estimation of the following biochemical analytes; fasting glucose; triglycerides; total cholesterol; high density lipoprotein cholesterol; Albumin; uric acid; Bilirubin; Malondialdehyde; Catalase; Glutathione peroxidase; Superoxide Dismutase; Glutathione; vitamin C; and lastly vitamin E. Results In this cross-sectional study, 39% subjects were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome , particularly in sedentary subjects. There was no difference in oxidative stress except significant rises in serum uric acid levels and catalase activity in subjects diagnosed with metabolic syndrome . Conclusion The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is higher without oxidative stress in this study, which suggests that oxidative stress does not contribute to the pathogenesis of MS in otherwise healthy subjects.http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/kumj.v8i4.6236 Kathmandu Univ Med J 2010;8(4):382-6

Background: Metabolic syndrome includes a constellation of various metabolic abnormalities that have been associated with cardiovascular disease, stroke and all-cause mortality in the general population. It has now been established that it is also associated with renal dysfunction. This study was done to assess renal function in metabolic syndrome in Indian population as well as its correlation with different parameters of the metabolic syndrome.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a university hospital from 2014 - 2015. Renal functions were studied in 100 obese individuals, 50 with and 50 without metabolic syndrome after informed consent and the results were analysed.Results: 100 obese individuals, 50 with and 50 without metabolic syndrome were compared. All underwent a physical examination and relevant investigations. All parameters of renal function showed significant derangement in cases as compared to controls. 38 patients (76%) among the cases (N=50) of metabolic syndrome had altered renal functions versus 9 patients (18%) among controls (n=50). Individually, there was a significant correlation of altered renal function (reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate eGFR and presence of microalbuminuria) with fasting blood glucose and systolic blood pressure (p=0.001), diastolic pressure (p=0.003) and triglyceride levels (p=0.036). High density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels did not show a significant correlation.Conclusions: Obese individuals with metabolic syndrome have significant derangement of renal functions as compared to those without metabolic syndrome. Most parameters of the syndrome are also independently associated with alteration of renal functions.

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between psychosocial work exposure and the presence of biological and imaging biomarkers of cardiovascular disease. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a sub-cohort of the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS). Psychosocial exposure was evaluated with the job demand–control model, and analysed according to the standard categorization: high strain, active, passive and low strain (reference). Biomarkers (blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, coronary artery calcification (CAC) and metabolic syndrome) were measured, or derived through measurements, from clinical examinations. Gender-specific prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with regression models and adjusted for age, education, smoking, physical activity, general life stress and body mass index (BMI). Results: The analyses included 3882 participants (52.5% women). High strain (high demands–low control) was linked to increased PR for low HDL cholesterol in women, adjusted for all covariates (PR 1.76; 95% CI 1.25–2.48). High strain was also related to moderately increased PR for metabolic syndrome in men, after adjustments for all covariates except BMI (PR 1.25; 95% CI 1.02–1.52). In addition, passive work (low demands–low control) was associated with diastolic hypertension in women (fully adjusted: PR 1.29; 95% CI 1.05–1.59). All relationships between psychosocial factors and LDL cholesterol or CAC (both genders), or hypertension (men), were non-significant. Conclusions: Poor psychosocial job conditions was associated with the presence of low HDL cholesterol and diastolic hypertension in women, and metabolic syndrome in men. These findings contribute to the knowledge of potential pathways between stressful work and coronary heart disease.
