Objectives: This study aimed to compare the colonization of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from the oral cavity on different suture materials used in oral implantology. Materials and Methods: Patients scheduled for implant surgery were included in this study. After flap approximation, the surgical site was sutured using silk, nylon, polyglactin 910 (Vicryl®) and triclosan-coated polyglactin 910 (Vicryl® Plus) sutures in a randomized order. Seven days after surgery, the sutures were removed and incubated in bile esculin agar (for E. faecalis), MacConkey agar (for E. coli), mitis salivarius agar (for S. mutans), and mannitol salt agar (for S. aureus) at 37°C for 24 h. The colonies were then counted. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Vicryl® sutures showed the highest accumulation of E. faecalis, followed by Vicryl® Plus, nylon, and silk. There was no significant difference between nylon and silk (P=0.5) or between Vicryl® and Vicryl® Plus (P=0.4). Vicryl® Plus sutures showed the highest accumulation of E. coli followed by Vicryl®, silk and nylon (P<0.01). Vicryl® sutures showed the highest accumulation of S. mutans, followed by Vicryl® Plus, silk, and nylon. Vicryl® Plus sutures showed the highest accumulation of S. aureus, followed by Vicryl®, nylon, and silk. Conclusion: Nylon sutures showed the least microbial accumulation. Vicryl® and triclosan-coated Vicryl® Plus sutures had no advantage over the commonly used silk sutures in decreasing the number of bacteria.

Isolation and enumeration of bacteria responsible for nosocomial infections from houseflies and determining their susceptibility to poison bait. Nusantara Bioscience 13: 24-28. Nosocomial infections represent a serious public health concern in developing countries. Houseflies are one of the most common household pests carrying different pathogenic organisms. The purpose of this study was to isolate and enumerate bacteria species from house flies and to determine their susceptibility to Agita® fly bait. Flies were collected from two hospital environments between July to December 2014, in Yazd Province of Iran. Bacterial species were isolated from the outer surfaces of flies, and Agita® efficacy was evaluated based on lethal time (LT50) after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 minutes. Three species of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus) responsible for nosocomial infections have been isolated and enumerated from flies. Among the 30 flies collected, 17, 24, and 3 flies were contaminated with E. coli, S. aureus, and Ps. aeruginosa, respectively. The minimum number of isolated bacteria was 3 × 102 CFU/mL, whereas the highest number was 2.4 × 105 CFU/mL. The susceptibility results showed that, despite the existence of a significant effect for heterogeneity in both field and laboratory strains (p-value ˂ 0/05) and an increase in the mortality of houseflies during the time, there was no significant difference between two strains regarding the efficacy of Agita® against houseflies. The findings of the present study revealed and confirmed that houseflies have an important role in the spread of nosocomial infections in hospital environments, and they are susceptible to Agita® fly bait.

Every day new sources of microbial and especially bacterial infections are reported, which are not taken into account, the fact that these sources have been implicated in the outbreaks of these infections. The goals of the current research focused on the exploration of the scope of microbial pollution of the widely traded paper currency notes of the Iraqi currencies (250, 1000 and 5000 Iraqi Dinars) in Kalar city. 300 banknotes (100 samples for each of the denominations under investigation) in circulation were gathered from different categories of Kalar population and one fresh sample for each of the three currencies (control negative). Each bill was rinsed in 5 ml D.W then cultured on Nutrient agar, Mannitol Salt agar and MacConkey agar, respectively, then incubated at 37 ºC for up to 48 hours. Results revealed the rate of microbial contamination, specifically bacterial ones as 94%, 68%, and 60%, respectively on the denominations of 250, 1000, and 5000 of Iraqi Dinars. In a descending order, and with regard to the prevalence rate, bacterial species contaminated 250, 1000 and 5000 Iraqi denominations respectively were as follows: 55.31%, 32.35% and 36.66% for Bacillus sp.; 14.89%, 38.23% and 20% for coagulase-negative Staphylococcus; 8.51%, 8.82% and 20% for E. coli; 2.12%, 11.76 and 20% for Pseudomonas sp.; 2.12% for each of Klebsiella sp., and Salmonella sp.; 10.63% and 4.25% for Enterobacter sp. and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, and only on 250 denomination;  2.94% and 5.88% for each of Corynebacterium sp. and Serratia sp. only on 1000 currency note; lastly, 3.33% for Proteus sp. on 5000 IQD only. These outcomes suggest that bacterial contamination of Iraqi Dinars, specifically the 250 denomination is risky and could be regarded as the real source of infectious diseases with the most dangerous pathogenic bacteria.

In this study, femtosecond laser-induced sub-micrometer structures are generated to modify polyethylene (PE) surface topographies. These surfaces were subjected to bacterial colonization studies with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as test strains. The results reveal that the nanostructures do not influence S. aureus coverage, while the adhesion of E. coli is reduced.

Тhe article presents the results of studies to determine the amount of bacterial ATP in pure and mixed cultures of microorganisms. The level of ATP-bioluminescence was determined using the HY-LiTE®2 (Merk, Germany) luminometer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions using special test systems. In the course of the experiments, the numerical values of bacterial ATP of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus have been determined. It was found that at the concentration of E. coli (1,5 ± 0,1)∙102…(2,1 ± 0,2)∙106 CFU / cm3, the level of ATP was 323,9 ± 16,2…22666,8 ± 906,7 RLU. At equal number of bacteria, the level of ATP St. aureus exceeded the level of ATP escherichia by 1,4…1,8 times. It was noted that in mixed cultures of Escherichia coli and staphylococcus, the values of ATP were average values between ATP escherichia and staphylococcal ATP and were within 423,4 ± 29,6…28334,1 ± 2550,1 RLU with the number of microorganisms (1,75 ± 0, 1) ∙ 102…(1,5 ± 0,1)∙106 CFU/cm3. It was found that in pure and mixed cultures of microorganisms between the level of bacteria and the parameters of ATP there is a linear dependence: the more the number of bacteria, the higher the level of ATP.

Objective. To compare the in vitro tensile strength of sutures used in implant surgery according to the type of thread and the immersion time in artificial saliva. Methods. For the development of the study, three suture materials were used: polyglactin 910 (PG), black silk (BS), and Teflon (PTFE) 4-0; 150 samples were used, which were divided among each type of suture and then subdivided into five groups of 10 according to the various immersion times (baseline, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days) in artificial saliva. A universal test machine was used to measure the tensile strength at a speed of 25 cm/min, stretch each sample until the material fails, and record the maximum strength in Newtons (N). Finally, the failure point of the samples was evaluated at 10× increase using a stereromicroscope (Leica Biosystems). Results. When analyzing the tensile strength of the various groups of sutures, it was evidenced that PG maintained its strength, which was lowest at baseline and highest at 21 days. When performing the statistical inference of PG and PTFE, it was found that the force necessary to achieve detachment was not statistically significant (p<0.05). However, it was shown that the force necessary to achieve rupture in the BS group was statistically significant (p=0.001). Conclusion. To sum up, when comparing the in vitro tensile strength of PG, BS, and PTFE sutures at baseline and 3, 7, 14, and 21 days, there was no statistically significant difference. This indicates that all sutures used present sufficient performance that remains resistant as time progresses.

This study was undertaken to determine if broiler chicken parts without skin are less contaminated with Campylobacter than those with skin. Samples were taken in a commercial plant from defeathered carcasses before evisceration. Bacterial counts from rinse of aseptically removed meat samples were lower than those from stomached skin samples. No Campylobacter were recovered from meat collected from the breasts or thighs, and only 2 of 10 drumstick meat samples had detectable levels of Campylobacter. However, 9 of 10 breast skin, 10 of 10 thigh skin, and 8 of 10 drumstick skin samples were positive for Campylobacter, with between 2 and 3 log10 CFU/g of Campylobacter. Breasts, thighs, and drumsticks were removed from broiler carcasses following evisceration before entering the chill tank. There was a significant difference (50 to 90%) in the levels of Campylobacter on breasts, thighs, and drumsticks with and without skin. Similar trends were noted for coliform, Escherichia coli, and total aerobic bacterial counts from samples collected in the plant. Broiler part samples were also collected at retail outlets. These samples were either skin on and skinned in the laboratory or skin off at purchase. Aseptic removal of skin from broiler breasts, thighs, and drumsticks did not cause change in Campylobacter, coliform, E. coli, or total aerobic counts recovered from the skinned part. Likewise, parts purchased without skin did not have different bacterial counts than paired parts purchased with the skin on. Consumers should not expect to significantly lower the number of bacteria present on a chicken breast, thigh, or drumstick by removing the skin.

Objective: The type of suture material affects the quality of scars. The aim of this study was to find the superior suture material for reduction mammoplasty between Prolene and Monocryl based on the comparison of scars. Method: A prospective observational study was conducted at a university-based hospital in Mashhad, Iran between October 2015 and September 2017. Monocryl and Prolene suture materials, used for closing the outermost layer in mammoplasty, were compared. Patients' incision scars were assessed objectively according to the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment (POSAS) criteria. The relevant CONSORT guideline was used for reporting this study. Results: Seventy-eight women with a mean age of 36.8±9.5 years were entered into the study. The frequency of wound healing in both groups was 97.4% 1 month after surgery and by the third visit, 3 months after surgery, only one patient had a stretched scar. Moreover, wound inflammation in the first two visits was less frequent in the Prolene group that healed completely 3 months after surgery (after excluding the one patient with wide scar inflammation). The frequency of itching of the wound in the Monocryl group was 24.4%, 11.5% and 12.8% in the three follow-up visits, respectively, and the values for the Prolene group were 24.4%, 9.0% and 6.4%, respectively. No significant difference was seen between the two groups in terms of wound healing, inflammation and itching (p>0.05). Overall, 94.8% of patients were satisfied with the surgery. Conclusions: Our study revealed that there was no significant difference between Monocryl and Prolene. Hence, either of the two suture materials can be used for wound closure in reduction mammoplasty.

A variety of suture materials are available for primary wound closure following oral surgical procedures. The aim was to review the tissue reactions to the various suture materials used in oral surgical interventions. Databases were searched using the following keywords: cotton, nylon, polyglecaprone 25, polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), Polyglactin 910, polyglycolic acid (PGA), polylactic acid, silk, surgery, suture, and tissue reaction. Articles published only in English language were included. Seventeen studies were included. Two studies reported that polyglecaprone 25 had positive effects on wound-healing as compared to silk. Six studies reported that silk elicits more intense tissue inflammatory response and delayed wound healing as compared to other suture materials (including ePTFE, polyglecaprone-25, PGA, and nylon). Polyglactin 910 sutures were associated with the development of stitch abscess in one clinical study. Eight studies reported that tissue reactions are minimal with nylon sutures. Tissue reactions to suture materials used for oral surgical interventions may vary depending on the surface properties and bacterial adherence properties of the material.

Purpose: Antibacterial-coated sutures have been reported to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections both in experimental and clinical studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of coated polyglactin 910 suture with triclosan (Vicryl Plus) and traditional polyglactin suture (Vicryl) with regard to surgical abdominal wound infections following abdominal sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture. Methods: Twelve Wistar rats weighing 285±15g were randomly distributed on Vicryl plus group (n=6) and Vicryl group (n=6). The variables to be evaluated were: (1) tensile strength of the tissues at the site of the suture (2) the histopathological aspects with counts of inflammatory cells; (3) bacteriology - growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Results: On the fifth postoperative day bacterial cultures of the secretions collected from abdominal wounds revealed growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella sp. A significant difference was observed in the mean colony forming units of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in wounds sutured with noncoated (Vicryl) versus triclosan-coated sutures (Vicryl Plus). In the Vicryl group, the average tensil strength was 533.8±75.8 gf/mm2, significantly lower than in Vicryl Plus group (854.0±51.7 gf/mm2). Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference (p<0.0001). The density of the inflammatory reaction was significantly higher (p=0.003) in the Vicryl group rats (1033.26±153.97) than the in Vicryl Plus group (723.29±96.5). Conclusion: This study demonstrated the in vivo efficacy of Coated Vicryl Plus suture, that prevented bacterial colonization and reduced the inflammatory response, allowing tissue healing even in infected wounds.

The objective of this study was to investigate the food safety status of street foods in the city of Can Tho, Vietnam. A total of 410 consumers was interviewed to get an insight into the popular street foods in the studied area. Vietnamese sandwich (34.63%) and sugarcane juice (24.51%) were consumed popularly according to the survey. A total of 263 street food samples (i.e.Vietnamese sandwich, n = 131 and sugarcane juice, n = 132) were collected from different locations such as schools, hospitals, markets, and other locations in four districts (i.e. Ninh Kieu, Cai Rang, Phong Dien and O Mon) of Can Tho city for microbiological analysis. Total aerobic mesophilic counts (TMC), yeast and mold, coliform, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus were assessed. Microbial contamination of Vietnamese sandwich was 5.7-9.2 log CFU/g (TMC), 2.0-7.4 log CFU/g (yeast and mold), 2.5-7.9 log CFU/g (coliform), 1.0-5.9 log CFU/g (E. coli), and 1.7-6.6 log CFU/g (Staphylococcus aureus). There was a significant difference in Vietnamese sandwich sampling among districts (p<0.05). In contrast, the contamination of sugarcane juice samples with regards to total aerobic mesophilic counts, yeast and mold, coliform, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus were 7.53±0.74, 5.56±0.71, 6.02±1.21, 2.26±1.31, 1.47±0.77 log CFU/mL, respectively. No statistically significant difference (p>0.05) was observed in sugarcane juice samples among districts and locations. The observation of the handling practices of street food vendors showed inadequate hygiene practices, assessment of the street foods safety showed that they do not satisfy the Vietnam hygiene standard of specific foods. These findings give an insight into the safety status of sampled street foods and may provide needed information for Vietnam’s authorities to further improve the safety of street food and create food safety awareness among consumers and handlers, thereby preventing risk to public health.
