The article deals with the methods of teaching English for specific purposes to border guard officers. Ability to communicate English is one of the core competences of border guards in order to provide the State border protection. The aim of the article is to characterise peculiarities and aim of the English language training of “Military Administration” masters. Particular attention is paid to the structure of educational program of the second (master’s) level of higher education on specialty “Military Administration (by branches of Armed Forces)” and development of working curriculum “English for specific purposes”. Our hypothesis is that it is efficacious to use modern methods of learning during the lessons of the English language that was verified by the experiment which was conducted from July 2017 to July 2018 in the form of a survey of the first year officers (47 people) in the Faculty of Executive Staff Training who were studying according to the new educational program on the basis of the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Analysis of the results of graduation examinations of border guard officers has shown that due to the use of the modern communicative methods of teaching in the educational process of the Academy, the quality of officers’ knowledge increased significantly. The result of the experiment confirmed that the officers generally acquired a good level of texts reading and translation skills, knowledge of professional lexical material, military terminology, and ability to make decision according the current legislation in the professional situation. It has proved the effectiveness of the implementation of working curriculum of English for specific purposes especially due to use of modern learning methods, forms of compatible collective activity, friendly atmosphere, attentive attitude toward partners on a communication and mutual help.

Knowledge of English professional terminology is one of the predominant factors for border guards’ successful professional performance during both border and immigration control carried out at their national state border and inside the country and also joint operations organised and implemented by the European Border and Coast Guard at the EU external borders.  The present article suggests an overview of the results of the measures taken by the State Border Guard of Latvia in 2017-2020 to facilitate the improvement of Latvian border guards’ competence in English professional terminology. Based on the results of the survey the author puts forward suggestions for possible improvements in English language training and testing for border guards.

The article is devoted to the psychological and pedagogical substantiation of the expediency of learning foreign languages while studying in the institution of higher education. The authors analyse the current educational process in Ukrainian and identify the most important factors influencing the formation of qualified professionals and establish the role of foreign language in each of these factors. It was found that studying can be extremely intensified due to learning a foreign language. It is established that learning foreign languages increases a person’s ability to develop intellectually. The article is devoted to the outline and research of several topical critical questions related to the study of the role of the Ukrainian youth in the development of civil society in terms of the undeclared Russian-Ukrainian war and global crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the influence of the civilization borderland factor on the mentality and behavior of borderland residents. The article focuses on the fact that the concurrently multidirectional influences, such as geopolitical, cultural, religious and others, make the borderland a zone of attraction and rejection, as well as the space for large-scale manipulations. The formation of civil society in the borderland area has its own specifics, yet scantily explored in the academic research. Special attention is paid to the increase of the civil society’s significance in various spheres from the promotion of reforms at the state level to the voluntary assistance provided to the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the “Joint Forces Operation”, internally displaced persons, and other segments of the population. To successfully solve the problem of building the Ukrainian civil society, it is necessary to fundamentally comprehend the youth’s participation in the solution of various problems of modern Ukraine. Thus, it is important that young citizens be ready for active cooperation with the state and public organizations. The research emphasizes one of the popular ways to transform young people into active citizens of Ukraine, which consists in their encouragement to participate in the process of building civil society at all levels of the educational process in the educational establishments of our state, Ukrainian weekend schools abroad; involvement in the work of the Young Scholars’ Council and various public organizations. This all caused the need to search for fundamentally new approaches to preparing youth for an active life in the Ukrainian society. The author of the article has elucidated the work experience of the scholars of the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies regarding the effective forms and methods of increasing young people’s activity through the prism of academic, cultural, and educational work.


The article is devoted to the conceptual development of the Ukrainian language training for foreigners who get the higher medical education in Ukraine. The tasks of Ukrainian language training of the non-native speakers who study in English have features determined by the specific communicative needs of this contingent. In order to identify such needs, the methodological approaches of the educational paradigm, which are relevant for the training of students who get higher medical education, are analyzed. At the methodological level of paradigm axiological (value), acmeological (professionally oriented), educational, strategic and problem-based approaches are outlined. Intercultural, communicative-cognitive, effective educational space approaches are distinguished at the socio-cultural level taking into account the level of proficiency in a foreign language. The task of the approaches of linguo-didactic level of the paradigm is the implementation of the above mentioned approaches in the application of methods and the creation of teaching resources, taking into account the metalinguistic, semiotic, polygraphic aspects of educational materials. The methods, the application of which in the process of language preparation ensures the realization of the communicative needs of non-native speakers, the main of which is the conscious-practical method, have been defined. To determine the communicative needs on the basis of the principle of frequency, the cataloging of communicative situations in the educational and professional sphere of communication relevant for educational migrants who receive medical education in English in the Ukrainian-speaking world is carried out. The current status of the methodological support of the educational process is described. The recommendations for optimizing the educational process organization based on the results of the study are summarized.

The article considers the issues of continuity in foreign language teaching in the process of continuing professional education in the system «school» – «university». The essence of continuity as a didactic principle is clarified and its components have been determined. The task of continuity in the content of teaching a foreign (English) language to students of non-language specialties of universities and the factors that complicate its implementation are outlined. The importance of adhering to this principle for optimizing the educational process at all levels and stages of learning is emphasized. The importance of adhering to the principle of continuity in the transition from school to university education system is emphasized. It is shown that continuity in foreign language learning covers all components of the learning process and is complex. Some technologies for ensuring the continuity of foreign language learning are proposed, which helps to improve the quality of language training for future professionals. The authors state that the concept of continuity is actively used in the national educational space as a designation of one of the prerequisites for optimizing the study of English at the stage of transition from the school stage to the system of higher education. The essence of continuity as a pedagogical principle is that at each higher stage of education in determining the content of education takes into account everything that was learned at earlier stages. It is stated that one of the technologies to ensure the implementation of the principle of continuity directly in the educational process is the use of a leveling course, the possibilities of which to improve the knowledge of freshmen and eliminate the possible gap between the starting level of English and the requirements of the university program were demonstrated.

Knowledge of the English language is very important not only for civil but also for the military personnel because there are a lot of changes in defense relations all over the world and English is the operational language. So, we should focus on high quality training of specialists who are able to work not only under standard conditions, but also to solve professional problems. According to the Ukrainian current legislation, one of the professional competences of border guards is to speak in English while accomplishing duties on the state border. So there is a necessity to analyze methods and ways of organizing the educational process of this category. The article reflects the key issues connected with the educational program of border guards; investigates integral, general and professional competencies and program learning outcomes. The main attention is paid to peculiarities of English for Specific Purposes and its aim to form foreign professional communicative competence according to the NATO Standards at the 2nd level. The hypothesis of our article is that the development of the national security masters’ communicative language ability depends on use of up to day learning methods at the English language lessons. The discipline ESP for border guards training includes such themes: “Conceptual bases of politics and public administration in the sphere of national security and defense of Ukraine”, “Border security of Ukraine”, “Border Security of the USA and EU country-members” and “Conceptual bases of politics and public administration in the sphere of national security and defense of the USA and EU country-members”. The organization of the lesson “Land navigation: map reading” has been discussed and its five-stage plan (introduction, input, practice, production, and conclusion) has been investigated. The information obtained from this paper could be of interest for English for Specific Purposes teaching material developers and foreign language instructors.

AbstractThe process of European and international integration has led to an increase of the English language use, turning it into the main means of communication at a global level. Thus, having a good command of the English language has become a necessity for every person, being a student’s first option. It is a priority both for the military personnel and undergraduates. In this context, the curricula of the military higher education have included English as a foreign language (EFL) as a compulsory discipline. In addition to this, it has gained in importance with the introduction of an international semester for the cadets attending the Military Leadership program of study, where all the subjects are taught in English. The main issue in using English as a medium of instruction in the teaching of particular subject matters is that this must be done in a correct manner so that it does not result in failure in the educational process. This paper points to the way English is used in the Land Forces Academy and offers some guidelines for specialists in producing their own teaching materials. Some examples are provided from teaching English for specific purposes, in our case military basic English.

The relevance of the study is dictated by the demand of the state for training competitive specialists who are ready to maintain an intercultural dialogue in their professional field. The main goal of modern language education is the development of innovative integrated courses that enable students to enrich their subject knowledge and to master the ability to use this knowledge at the international level. This article considers Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to be promising ways of implementing the integrative approach into the education system. Many methodologists and linguists have proven the effectiveness of interconnected teaching foreign languages and cultures, resulting in the selection of a culture-based course designed in English as an object of the research. With a view to developing students’ professional foreign language competence and enriching subject knowledge, the educational process includes using digital tools provided by museums around the world (the State Hermitage Museum, the Louvre Museum, the British Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Uffizi Gallery, The Vatican Museums), as well as the tasks based on these authentic resources. The study reveals that digital archives, online art collections, ‘Virtual Visit’, audio and video resources are valuable sources of authentic materials that can be used in the process of professionally oriented English teaching.

Inthearticletheauthorsconsiderthe concept of flipped learning method, its features and constituent compo-nents.Flippedlearning (FL) is a pedagogical method aimed at traditional education system transformation. FL method implies the shift of activities performed in group and in individual space (activities previously done in class, now students do outside of class). Due to insufficient level FL application study in homeland education system, authors focused on studying of FL effectiveness in the process of English language teach-ing as a foreign language at universities of 5 countries: Russia, Egypt, Ecuador, Thailand and Indonesia. The universities selection for study was carried out according to such criteria as: level of education, English language study as a foreign language, FL elements implementation in students training, using feedback at the end of the course study.According to the carries out analysis, all participants of educational process demon-strated positive attitude to FL use at5 universities, among leading positive points were mentioned the follow-ing: improvement in language proficiency level, increase in the level of students’independent work in organ-izing their studies, possibility of digital technologies wide implementation in educational process.As the re-sults of performedanalysis at foreign universities in the field of FL method implementation in language train-ing, the authors carried out SWOT analysis, which makes it possible to determine presence of opportunities, difficulties and threats for FL implementation in the process of foreign language training at homelanduniversity.

Ability to communicate in English is one of the prior competences border guards are required to have in order to ensure qualitative border control and border checks on the state border. Being aware of the importance of knowledge of English for border guards in fulfilment service duties on regular basis the State Border Guard of Latvia tried and tries to find optimal solutions for organising English language training for its staff. The present paper is a summary of the results of research carried out with the aim to work out suggestions on the measures to be taken in order to provide the SBG officials with the possibility to acquire and maintain English language knowledge and skills required for qualitative fulfilment of service duties. In the course of the research the assessment of border guards’ level of knowledge of English and analysis of English language courses provided by the SBG to border guards was carried out.
