This study mainly investigates the motivational characteristics of Chinese college students learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP). By critically examining and comparing Gardner’s (1985) Integrative-Instrumental model and the Self-determination Theory (SDT) by Deci and Ryan(1985), the researcher finds out that the latter one is more comprehensive and applicable to the case of Chinese college ESP learners (the subjects). Thus the researcher develops a questionnaire within the SDT framework to analyze the subjects’ motivations. Drawing upon a follow-up statistical analysis, the research discovers the motivational propensities of the subjects. A discussion of corresponding motivational methods to help improve the subjects’ ESP learning is provided at the end of the article.

The World Health Organization Quality of Life-100 (WHOQOL-100, Power, Harper, Bullinger, & WHO1QLG), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (Zhang, 1993), and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (Zhang, 1993) were used to determine whether Chinese college students from only child and sibling child families rated perceptions of their quality of life differently. Small to moderate significant differences were found when comparing only students to sibling students on the WHOQOL-100 with no significant differences on measures of anxiety and depression. These results suggest that only students do not differ greatly from sibling students in terms of their overall perceptions of their quality of life. A unique characteristic of this study was that it targeted older college students born after implementation of the one-child-per-family policy in China. Also, self-rating instruments were used to gain a greater holistic understanding of the emotional well-being, physical state and social functioning of students. Several psychosocial and economic reasons, including methodological issues related to this study's findings, were discussed.

This concept paper discusses the issues and challenges faced by Chinese teachers in teaching the Malay language at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC). In accordance with the functionality of the Malay language as the national language, the Malay language should not only be mastered by the Malays but for all races in Malaysia. Good command of the Malay language can foster the self-esteem of every citizen in this country. The Malay language is also a compulsory subject that should be studied by every student, including students at SJKC. Teaching the Malay Language by Chinese teachers in SJKC is not an easy job because Chinese students are not native speakers of the Malay language. It is much different from their native language, the Malay language is only used by Chinese students during lessons and they seldom use it in their daily life. Chinese students are lack interest in learning the Malay language because it seems that learning the Malay language is very difficult for them. Therefore, the Chinese students’ achievement in the Malay language is still not satisfactory. Thus, the main focus of this concept paper is to analyse the issues and challenges faced by Chinese teachers in teaching the Malay language. These challenges make it difficult for teachers in ensuring satisfactory achievement among pupils. Various methods should be taken to improve the quality of teaching the Malays language in SJKC and thus to produce Chinese students who are fluent in speaking the Malay language. Therefore, the Chinese teachers who teach the Malay language in SJKC have to bear this responsibility by taking various initiatives to enhance the achievement of Chinese students in Malay language learning. Through this concept paper, it is hoped to reveal the issue of teaching the Malay language by Chinese teachers in SJKC to various parties.

Abstract Background Employee personality is an important factor that affects healthcare service delivery. It appears from the literature that customers perceive employees with personality traits of conscientiousness and agreeableness as more reliable and empathetic and therefore will rank higher service quality. Relationships between team members also affect the perception of service quality. The research examined whether healthcare employees' personality traits (conscientiousness and agreeableness) are related to their perception of service quality, mediated by the quality of team relationships (trust among team members, peer support, and participation in decision-making). Methods First, 35 nurses (Israeli college students completing their BA) were asked to rate 22 items based on the Big Five Personality Traits, that most influence employee relationships. The two prominent personality traits were conscientiousness and agreeableness. Next, 174 self-administered questionnaires were completed by nurses who are college students completing their BA (72% return rate). The questionnaire examined personality traits (conscientiousness and agreeableness), service quality, and employee relationships (trust among team members, peer support, and participation in decision-making). Results The mediation model was significant [F(4, 169)=35.03, p < 0.001, R Square=0.45]. However, only trust among team members was found as a mediator between employee personality and perceptions of service quality. Conclusions Employee personality characterized by conscientiousness and agreeableness encourages trust-based employee relationship, which in turn positively affect the quality of service provided. Healthcare organizations should consider this in their human resources policies and procedures, in order to improve healthcare services. Key messages Employee's personality traits are relevant to healthcare service quality. Nurturing trust among healthcare employees may result in improved healthcare services.
