This paper aims to review research that determines the influence of outsourcing on knowledge management and learning, a process which will help identify new research opportunities and contribute to the further development of outsourcing theory. The study consists of a review of 34 refereed articles on outsourcing in relation to knowledge management and learning. The findings were summarised in a number of hypotheses and two conceptual models which highlight the contribution of outsourcing to either competitive advantage or disadvantage. This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all peer reviewed articles in the field of outsourcing in relation to learning and knowledge management. Yet, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large share of studies available. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no literature review on this topic has previously been published in academic journals.

Soft System Methodology (SSM) is common guidance to conceptualise Knowledge Management (KM) model since its benefit to handle complex situations. This study highlights SSM implementation on KM conceptual model using Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to produce insights about current implementation and promising chances in the future. This study also concerns on KM conceptual models as created without certain features in many case studies. Many various interpretation can arise to understand how system should work. This situation affected more spending time to validate KM conceptual model with stakeholders. Using SLR, this study criticises the importance of features as provided in eligible articles. Out of 144 articles from 2009 until 2019 as delivered from Scopus query, this study selected 12 articles about SSM on KM. It classified them into several criteria: published year, sector, and related KM life cycle. By mapping them to solve research questions, this study promoted actors, activities, and sequential order of activities as recommended features. By implementing them, KM conceptual model creation can be faster and accepted by stakeholders.

In today's uncertain environment, companies should develop solutions to meet the global competition trends and the rapidly changing customer demands. In fact, to gain a competitive advantage, organizations should be equipped with knowledge, which is considered as an essential resource, rather than with traditional resources, such as durable assets or material/technical resources. In other words, investing in intangible assets that are difficult to imitate, such as social capital, promotes dissemination and exchange of accessible knowledge used by organizations. Such knowledge management processes enable firms to enhance their capacity of innovation as well as their creativity skills. The objective is therefore to develop a literature review that helps enrich and in-depth understanding the dynamics of social capital within an industrial cluster (i.e., a common geographical area).

In the search for sustainable competitive advantage, managing knowledge is critical not only for large organizations but also for Small and Medium sized Tourism Enterprises (SMTEs) where limited resources and the lack of the strategic direction are prevalent. Findings from the literature review suggest that, in relative terms, SMTEs are less ready for implementing knowledge management projects than are large organizations. It is also suggested that SMTEs are in need of practical strategic guidance if they are to make the most of the, often under-exploited, knowledge within and available to their organizations. For the support of SMTEs’ initial needs for knowledge management, this paper proposes a strategy aimed at harnessing explicit knowledge and strategic activities based on an extensive analysis of the literature. The proposed strategy contains actionable steps with timelines and milestones that can be implemented and modified iteratively by SMTEs, with in-built assessment and measurement mechanisms. The results of our study suggest that implementation itself can be flexible as well as iterative with no need for all the steps outlined for an improvement of the knowledge management process to be followed.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the business imperatives characteristic of an organisation that will benefit from the use of Big Data, to give business managers, knowledge workers and librarians guidance as to whether their business will benefit from the use of this technology. Design/methodology/approach A literature review was conducted to identify and categorise Big Data benefits into four overall benefit categories. This provided a basis to identify the business imperatives distinctive of an organisation that would be able to benefit from the use of Big Data. As a final step, the degree of impact of each of the benefit categories was concluded to assist business managers in the better understanding and evaluation of whether Big Data would be a suitable technology for their specific organisation. Findings The competitive advantage that a business can gain from the use of analysing large amounts of data (Big Data) is because it is equipped to utilise the information obtained through analysing the data in such a way that it provides better knowledge management within the organisation. The business imperatives and benefits identified in this study will assist organisations in evaluating whether Big Data will be a suitable technology for their organisation. Originality/value This paper provides a better understanding of business imperatives distinctive of organisations that can benefit from the use of Big Data.
