Background : Propolis is a resinous hive product collected by bees ( Apis Mellifera ) from tree buds and mixed with secreted bee wax in order to avoid bacterial contamination in the hive, and also to seal it. Propolis is employed for the treatment of various infectious diseases because it is wellknown that is has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Calcium hydroxide was introduced to the dental profession in 1921 and has been considered the “gold standard” for direct pulp capping materials   in the past decades. Aims :This research is to investigate the development of new blood vessels ( angiogenesis ) in rat's dental pulp following application of propolis extract and calcium hydroxide. Methods : There was 43 Strain Wistar rats  of 8–16 week old and 200–250 grams in weight were used in this study. The rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Pulp exposures were performed on the occlusal surface of right maxillary first molars. At the 1st and 4th groups, as the control group, without pulp capping paste. At the 2rd and 5th groups, pulp exposure was applied with propolis extract. And at 3th and 6th groups pulp exposure was applied with calcium hydroxide ,and the 7th group is negative control is a normal teeth. Pulp exposure was applied with propolis extract. After that, all of the cavities were filled with light cured glass ionomer cement as a permanent filling. Animals on the 1st, 2rd, and 3th groups were decaputed after 7x24 hour  post  pulp capping material application and were sent for histological examination which new blood vessels ( angiogenesis )  cells were present. And at the 4th, 5th, 6th groups were culled after 7x 24 hour post  pulp capping material application and were sent for histological examination which new blood vessels ( angiogenesis ) evaluated were present. Result : All sample were histopathological examinated and data was statiscally analysed using one way ANOVA the histological analysis revealed that the development of the new blood vessels  occurred in all group. The new blood vessels ( angiogenesis ) of propolis extract group was milder compared to the control and calcium hydroxide group, with statistical analysis showed significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The development of new blood vessels is earlier happened in group capping material containing propolis and which show with reduce the amount of the new blood vessels in days 7 and 14 than the other group.

Background: Propolis is a natural biocompatible material that has been widely studied in dentistry because of its inflammatory, anti-microbial and immunomodulatory properties. One of the active components is caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE). CAPE is effective in stimulating collagen as well as inhibiting the inflammation and degeneration of dental pulp. Purpose: To investigate the post-administration of propolis extract as pulp capping material enhances odontoblast-like cell thickness and type 1 collagen expression in Wistar rats (Rattus Norvegicus) Methods: This research was a true experimental design with a posttest-only control group design. Sixty-three Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups, with each group consisting of 21 rats: Group I: Positive control; no capping material was administered; Group II: CAPE was administered; Group III: 11% of the propolis extract was administered. All samples were filled with glass ionomer cement. Seven rats from each group were sacrificed after days 7, 14 and 28 of post-pulp capping administration, and their afflicted teeth were subsequently extracted for histologic analysis. Results: No significant difference was seen in odontoblast-like cell thickness after the application of CAPE and propolis on days 7 and 14 (p > 0.05). However, a significant difference was noticed on day 28 (p < 0.05), with the thickness of odontoblast-like cell in CAPE being thinner than that in propolis. A significant difference in the expression of type 1 collagen was observed on days 7, 14 and 28 after the application of the propolis extract compared with CAPE (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The post-administration of propolis extract as a pulp capping material could enhance odontoblast-like cell thickness and type 1 collagen expression in Wistar rats.

Background: Pulp inflammation can be treated with pulp capping by calcium hydroxide as the gold standard. Pulp capping by calcium hydroxide could causing tissue necrosis followed by inflammation. Calcium hydroxide combined with propolis which have anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of the Nf-kB pathway and pro-inflammatory cytokines. That process will inhibit the increase of vascular permeability and neutrophil chemotaxis. Inflammatory process can accelerate by controlling the amount of neutrophil cells as a acute phase marker, so the healing process occurs more quickly. Therefore it is necessary to study the amount of neutrophil cells in the pulp perforation of Wistar rats after applicated by combination of calcium hydroxide-propolis. Purpose: To analyze the difference amount of neutrophil cells on the Wistar rats pulp perforation after applicated by calcium hydroxide-propolis combination compared with calcium hydroxide-aquadest Method: M1 tooth perforated for all groups with three types tratment: no medication (control group), calcium hydroxide-aquadest 1: 1 (P-1 group), and calcium hydroxide-propolis 1: 1.5 (P-2 group) and closed with cention. Observations were made on the 1st, and 3rd day with HE staining. Results: One Way ANOVA shown a significant difference (p <0.05) of the average amount of neutrophil cells between all treatment groups on 1st day (p=0,000) and 3rd day (p=0,000). The amount of neutrophil cells in the calcium hydroxide-propolis (P-2) combination group was lower than control group and calcium hydroxide-aquadest (P-1) group on the 1st and 3rd day. Conclusion: The amount of neutrophil cells after application of calcium hydroxide-propolis is lower than calcium hydroxide-aquadest application.

Background: Calcium hydroxide is a dental material used as a gold standard for pulp capping materials. However, calcium hydroxide has several weaknesses which cause many researchers to look for alternative ingredients that come from nature. Propolis in the field of dentistry has long been used because of its ability as an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and can cure scars. The combination of calcium hydroxide and propolis is proven to have good biocompatibility and anti-bacterial properties. One of the requirements of pulp capping material is to have sufficient compressive strength. Therefore, a research to test the compressive strength value of the combination of calcium hydroxide with propolis is needed. Purpose: To find out the difference in compressive strength of the combination of calcium hydroxide-propolis with a ratio of 1: 1, 1: 1.5, and 1: 2. Methods: The study used 4 treatment groups with each group consisting of 6 replications. Group 1 is a combination of calcium hydroxide-propolis with a ratio of 1: 1, group 2 with a ratio of 1: 1.5, group 3 with a ratio of 1: 2, and a positive control group using calcium hydroxide - sterile aquadest. Calcium hydroxide powder and propolis extract liquid is mixed according to comparison and printed on a cylindrical mold with the size of 4 mm x 6 mm. Then, the compressive strength was tested using an Autograph test instrument. Result: Compressive strength was smaller in group 3 compared to group 2, group 2 compared to group 1, and group 1 compared to the control group. Conclusion: In calcium hydroxide-propolis combination, the more propolis extract used in the combination the lower the compressive strength of the combination will be.

Background: One purpose of operative dentistry is the maintenance of healthy pulp by reducing the need for root canal treatment and the possibility of undesirable scenarios such as tooth loss. Propolis is a plant-derived substance that contains a resin produced by honeybees belonging to the Apis mellifera species. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a combination of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and propolis extract on odontoblast-like cell proliferation in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: This research constituted a true experimental laboratory-based investigation with post-test control group design. Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups. The first molar pulp of each sample was perforated on occlusal surfaces using a low speed round bur. On day 3, the samples were divided into six groups (n=10): Group I: control; Group II: Ca(OH)2 + 11%; propolis extract; Group III: Ca(OH)2 + aquadest, and on day 7: Group IV: control; Group V: Ca(OH)2 + 11% propolis extract; Group VI: Ca(OH)2 + aquadest. All samples were filled with restorative material. They were subsequently sacrificed after 3 and 7 days post-pulp capping administration and the afflicted tooth extracted for hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The resulting data was subjected to statistical analysis to ascertain the proliferation of odontoblast-like cells. The significance of differences between the groups was determined by a one-way ANOVA test followed by a post hoc Tuckey HSD. A p-value <0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: On day 3, a significant difference existed between group II (Ca(OH)2–propolis) and group I (control group) and group III (Ca(OH)2–aquades), whereas Ca(OH)2–propolis revealed that the proliferation of odontoblast-like cells was higher. Meanwhile, on day 7, there was a significant difference between all groups whereas, with regard to Ca(OH)2–propolis, the proliferation of odontoblast-like cells in group V was higher. Conclusion: Application of combination of Ca(OH)2-propolis extract can increase the proliferation of odontoblast-like cells in pulp tissue on days 3 and 7.

Background: Reversible pulpitis is an inflammation of dental pulp caused by the opening of the pulp due to cavities. One of the procedures in exposed pulp treatment is direct pulp capping using calcium hydroxide. However, this material has side effects, its high pH can cause necrosis, and due to that, a safer alternative material is needed. Karamunting leaf extract contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins which have immunomodulatory properties that play an important role in healing exposed pulp. Objective: To determine the effect of karamunting leaf extract on the number of macrophages in pulp inflammation. Methods: This was a true experimental research with posttest-only group design, using simple random sampling that consist of 24 male Wistar rats which later be divided into 3 groups. The perforated rat dental pulp was then treated with karamunting leaf extract as a treatment group, calcium hydroxide as a positive control group, and not given any application (without drug) as a negative control group. The samples were analyzed histologically on the 3rd to 7th day after the application, inflammatory response occurred in all groups. Results: The two-way ANOVA results showed that there was a significant difference between the karamunting leaf extract group, the group that was not given drug, and the group given calcium hydroxide with a value p<0.05. Conclusion: Based on the research conducted, it is concluded that the administration of karamunting leaf extract can reduce the number of macrophages in pulp inflammation. Keywords: calcium hydroxid, exposed pulp, karamunting leaf, macrophages, pulp inflammation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of two experimental pastes containing propolis extract associated with calcium hydroxide against polymicrobial cultures collected from 16 necrotic and fistulae root canals in primary molars of 4-8-year-old children of both sexes. The agar-well diffusion technique was used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the following pastes: 11.0% ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) + calcium hydroxide; and 11.0% extract of propolis without ethanol (EP) + calcium hydroxide. EEP, EP and the association of calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol (CHP) was used as the positive control groups, and propylene glycol was used as a negative control group. Friedman and Wilcoxon tests were used to compare the data from the microbial growth inhibition zones (p<0.05). Paste 1 and Paste 2 showed larger growth inhibition zones against microorganisms from root canal samples than CHP (p=0.021 and 0.003, respectively). Paste 2 tended to have larger growth inhibition zones than Paste 1 (p=0.053). The association between propolis and calcium hydroxide was effective in controlling dental infections in vitro.

Abstract BackgroundThis study compared the effect of Biodentine (BD) and Tech Biosealer Capping (BS) on the pulpal tissue response after pulp capping in dogs, teeth.MethodsThree mongrel dogs were enrolled in this study. Class V cavities with pulp exposure were performed on the buccal surface of 30 teeth (2 experimental groups) and left without pulp exposure in 15 teeth (control group). The cavities of experimental groups were capped with either Biodentine (BD Group, N= 15 teeth) or Tech-Biosealer Capping (BS Group, N= 15 teeth). All cavities (experimental and control groups) were restored with resin-modified glass ionomer. Dentine bridge formation, architechecture of the odontoblastic layers and signs of inflammation were assessed after 1, 2 and 3 months using the computer image analyzer (Leica Qwin 500).ResultsBD group showed a thick newly formed reparative dentin bridge completely closing the exposure site with cell inclusions and mineralization, variable amount of odontoblast-like cells, preserved pulp tissue, marked numerous collagen fibers and blood vessels. While BS group showed an incomplete newly formed reparative dentin bridge with tunnel defect, vacuolated odontoblasts, complete pulp degeneration with multiple edematous spaces, hyperemic blood vessels, extravasated RBCs, multiple calcified structures scattered just beneath the dentin bridge and through the pulp tissue, and newly ill-defined odontoblasts.ConclusionFor pulp capping, Biodentine has better dentine bridge formation and pulp preservation than Tech Biosealer Capping.

Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate if hyperhomocysteinaemia is a contributive risk factor for the pathogenesis and the activity of Behçet's disease (BD).Design and Methods. Fifty four patients fullfiling the criteria of the International Study Group for BD were enrolled. Fifty healthy volunteers matched for age and sex with the BD group were included as a negative control group. Patients, with any condition that might affect plasma homocysteine concentration, were excluded.Results. Mean serum homocysteine concentration was significantly higher in patients with BD than in the healthy controls (), in patients with active disease (), and in masculine gender (). There was no significant difference between homocysteine level and clinical involvement.Conclusions. We demonstrated that plasma total homocysteine level (tHcy) is increased in BD and correlated with disease activity. No association was found between homocysteine levels and clinical involvement.

Background: The process of wound healing is influenced by various factors such as age, hormones, and wound care. Wound care is done to accelerate wound healing which can be done by various methods, one of them is traditional care. Traditional wound care can use medicinal plants. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa is a medicinal plant that has an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antibacterial content. Thus this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the antiseptic solution of the Rodhomyrtus tomentosa leaf extract on wound healing in male Wistar rats. Method: this research is pure experimental research with post test only control group design. Thirty male white rats were divided into five groups, namely negative control, positive control, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaf extract 15%, 30%, and 60%. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaf extraction was carried out by maceration method with 70% ethano solvent. The extraction results are divided into 3 concentrations (15%, 30% and 60%). The wound healing process was evaluated by measuring the length of the wound manually from 0 to 10 days in each group. Meanwhile, the number of fibroblast cells was calculated through hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining and observed using an Olympus CX41 microscope with a 10x magnification and objective lens magnification in 3 fields. Result: There was a significant difference in the reduction in wound length (p =< 0,000) between the five experimental groups (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaf extract solution 15%, 30% and 60%, negative control and positive control. Solution of rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaf extract accelerated the increase in the number of fibroblasts compared to the negative control group (p = 0.003), but did not make a difference (p = 0.403) with the positive control group. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaf extraction solution had the same microscopic effect on the number of fibroblasts with a positive control group given 0.9% NaCl solution. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the number of fibroblasts between all groups, but no difference in wound healing length.

Lunula is the white, half-moon shaped area seen in proximal ends of some nails. Though a few studies have described the nail changes that can occur in association with HIV infection, none of these paid much attention to lunula. Aims and Objectives. To study the lunula in fingernails among HIV infected patients. Materials and Methods. An observational, cross-sectional study to record presence of lunula in 168 HIV-positive patients and compare it with age and sex matched 168 healthy HIV-negative control. Anolunula (absence of lunula) in HIV-positive patients was correlated with CD4 counts, stages of HIV infection, time since patient was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and status of antiretroviral therapy. Results. Anolunula was present in significantly more fingernails in HIV-positive patients compared to HIV-negative controls. There was a highly significant difference for total anolunula (anolunula in all fingernails) in study and control group. Incidence of total anolunula was directly proportional to the stage of HIV infection, increasing progressively as the HIV infection advances from stage 1 to stage 4. Conclusion. Absence of lunula is related to not only HIV infection per se but also the stages of HIV infection.
