Early childhood development relies on various micronutrients. We recently reported that home fortification of complementary foods using spirulina reduced the time to attain motor milestones in Zambian infants. The objective of this study is to estimate the long-term associations between spirulina supplementation during the first 1000 days and child gross motor development, fine motor development, language, and personal–social skills at preschool age. We used longitudinal data from a randomized trial conducted in Zambia. In 2015, 501 infants (age, 6–18 months) were provided daily supplements of maize-soy-based porridge with spirulina (SP) and without spirulina (CON). Supplementation period lasted for 16 months. In January 2018, children who participated in the initial trial were resurveyed (CON: 182 children; SP: 188 children; now aged 36–48 months). We assessed the infants’ gross motor development, fine motor development, language, and personal–social skills using a modified version of Malawi Development Assessment Tool. The initial clinical trial registration number was NCT03523182. Children in the SP group had higher scores in gross and fine motor development, language, and social skills than those in the CON group. Home fortification of complementary foods using spirulina during the first 1000 days improved development among Zambian children at preschool age.

To determine the impact of the Olympic Games the Sydney Sexual Health Centre database was accessed for demographic, health care utilization, and morbidity variables for two periods of interest: 15-29 September 2000 (the 'Olympic period'), and 1-30 September 1999 ('1999 comparison period'). Differences were tested by chi-square statistics and by calculation of odds ratios (ORs) using SPSS. During the Olympic period twice as many of the new patients had arrived in Australia that year (35% c.f. 18%: OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.49-4.05, P=0.0002). Per attendance the proportion with symptoms or a known sexually transmitted infection (STI) contact was higher during the Games (29% c.f. 16% OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.1.27-2.21, P=0.0002) and there was a marginally higher yield of bacterial STIs (6% c.f. 3%: OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.06-3.13 P=0.03). The normal clinic population was replaced by an increased proportion of symptomatic patients who were recent arrivals in Australia.

Background: One Indicator of successful health development are toddlers free from stunting. The cause of stunting is a lack of macro and micro nutrients and chronic infectious diseases. Micronutrients such as zinc have  a role in growth which affects the  hormones that play a role in bone growth. The role of zinc in motoric development indirectly is in arranging  and releasing neurotransmitters that can affect nerve stimulation in the brain. This neurotransmitters will deliver nerve stimulation so that motor motion occurs. Motor development is a motion that involves muscles, brain and nerve that are controlled by the central part of the motor that is brain. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between adequacy of zinc intake and motoric development in stunted and non-stunted toddlers. Methods: This type of research is an observational study with cross sectional design. The sample size was 50 toddlers, consisted of 25 stunting toodlers and 25 non-stunting toddlers and lived  in Puskesmas Wilangan, Nganjuk District, chosen by simple random sampling technique. Adequacy of zinc intake data was assessed using the Food Recall Form 3x 24 hours. Measurement of motoric development using the Pre-Screening Development Questionnaire (KPSP). Descriptive and inferential data analysis using Chi Square Test. Results: The result showed that there was a correlation between the level of zinc adequacy and motor development in the stunting toddler group (p=0.04) and non-stunting toddlers group (p=0.031).Conclusions: The level of adequacy of zinc has enough motor development better than the level of zinc sufficiency is less in the group of non-stunting toddlers.ABSTRAKLatar Belakang: Salah satu indikator keberhasilan pembangunan kesehatan adalah balita  terbebas dari stunting.

The health problems are frequently arise in Islamic boarding school (pesantren) such as the multiple occurrence of infectious diseases. This condition is due to poor hygiene behavior and is exacerbated by the condition of the students’ dormitory environment. One of the alarming health problems in pesantren is Leuchorrea. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between vaginal hygiene behavior and the presence of Candida sp on bathroom water of Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya. This study was an observational study with cross sectional design. The study participants were 100 students selected by using simple random sampling. The correlation between vaginal hygiene behavior and Leucorrhea was analyzed by using Chi-Square Test (α=0,1). The presence of Candida in bathroom water was analyzed descriptively. The result of this study showed that 48 students (48%) were suffering from pathological leucorrhea. Vaginal hygiene behaviors associated to pathological leucorrhea were including of the frequency of changing underwear, p value = 0,014 < α(0,1); the habit of wearing underwear alternately, p value= 0,012 < α(0,01);  student’s way to wash the vagina, p value= 0,001 < α(0,01), the use of tissue after washing the vagina, p value= 0,097 < α(0,01); and the frequency of changing sanitary pads, p value = 0,001 <α(0,1). Candida sp, Candida krusei, and Candida Parapsilosis were found in the bathroom water. The conclusion of this study is some of the vaginal hygiene behaviors were significantly correlated with to pathological leucorrhea, and the presence of Candida sp in bathroom water had a potential to be one of the risk factors of pathological leucorrhea of the boarding school’s students.
