Employees’ level of career intention plays an important role in organizational readiness and dynamism to achieve success. Several studies were conducted on career adaptability and career intention, however, only a few were able to find evidence on the influence of position and years in service to government employees in the Philippines. This study aims to determine the significant differences in career adaptability and career intention of government employees based on years of service and job level. Results showed a significant difference in career intention when grouped according to job level and years in service and no significant difference in career adaptability when grouped according to job level and years in service.

The purpose of this study is to determine the mediating and moderating factor of organizational climate on the relationship of career adaptability and career intention. A total of 991 employees from a government institution participated in the study. The results showed that there are significant relationships between organizational climate, career adaptability, and career intention. The organizational climate was found to mediate the relationship between career adaptability and career intention. However, the organizational climate has no moderating effect on career adaptability and career intention. The result will be useful in providing guidance in the design and development of programs that will strengthen the employees’ career intention and the overall perception of the organizational climate.

The relationship between locus of control and occupational level was investigated for middle-management ( n = 20) and nonmanagement ( n = 41) women employed at a financial services company. No significant difference was found between the groups for locus of control or for social desirability. Significant correlations were found for the nonmanagement group between externality and schooling ( r = –.39), years of service ( r =.42), and social desirability ( r = –.47), but none were found for women in middle management. A significant moderate correlation of –.39 was obtained between locus of control and social desirability for all 61 women.

Urban agriculture comprises a variety of farming systems, ranging from subsistence to fully commercialized agriculture. Pollution from automobile exhaust, industrial and commercial
activities may affect humans, crops, soil, and water in and around urban agriculture areas. The research aimed to investigate the level and distribution of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in white cabbage (Brassica rapa L.), soil, and irrigation water taken from urban sites. The research was conducted in Las Piñas and Parañaque, Metro Manila, Philippines. The field area was divided into three sections based on its distance from the main road (0, 25, and 50 m). Irrigation water was taken from canal (Las Piñas) and river (Parañaque). Pb and Cd contents of the extract were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Combined analysis over locations was used. The relationship between distance from the main road and metal contents was measured by Pearson’s correlation. Based on combined analyses, highly significant difference over locations was only showed on Cd content in white cabbage. Cd content in white cabbage grown in Parañaque was higher than that cultivated in Las Piñas, while Cd content in the soil between both sites was comparable.
The average Pb content (1.09 µg g-1 dry weight) was highest in the white cabbage grown right beside the main road. A similar trend was also observed in the soil, with the highest concentration being recorded at 26 µg g-1 dry weight. There was a negative relationship between distance from the main road and Pb and Cd contents in white cabbage and the soil. Level of Pb in water taken from the canal and river was similar (0.12 mg l-1), whereas
levels of Cd were 0.0084 and 0.0095 mg l-1, respectively. In general, the concentrations of Pb and Cd in white cabbage and soil as well as irrigation water were still in the acceptable limits. In terms of environmental hazards and polluted city environment, it seems that big cities in Indonesia especially Jakarta and Surabaya have the same problem with the Philippines. Therefore, it is suggested that the study on heavy metal contamination
in several crops, especially those grown along the main road, should be conducted.

Night shift workers may have a disrupted circadian rhythm, which may contribute to the development of skin disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the prevalence and severity of self-reported skin disease between “regular” day shift workers compared to “graveyard” night shift workers. We conducted surveys from 630 call center agents in Manila, the Philippines, and they were analyzed regarding demographics, medical history, dermatologic history, lifestyle, and sleep. No difference was found in the prevalence of skin disease between shifts. However, night shift workers were worse sleepers. When compared to good sleepers, poor sleepers had a higher prevalence of skin disease with worse severity. Graveyard shift workers with poor sleep may have increased skin disease severity.

AbstractTurnover intention is a negative outcome for an organization. The purpose of this article is to examine the relationships among work passion, subjective well-being, career adaptability, and turnover intention for Chinese government employees. The article consists of an empirical study with a sample of 472 government employees in Shandong Province, China. Participants completed a series of questionnaires in three waves. The results indicate that harmonious passion is negatively related to turnover intention and that obsessive passion is positively related to turnover intention. Additionally, the relationship between harmonious/obsessive passion and turnover is mediated by subjective well-being, and career adaptability moderates the relationship between harmonious/obsessive passion and subjective well-being. Implications are discussed.

Orientation: The call centre is recognised as being a stressful work environment that affects the general wellbeing of call centre agents.Research purpose: This study explored whether call centre agents’ sense of coherence significantly influences their career adaptability and whether their burnout levels significantly moderate the sense of coherence–career adaptability relationship. The research also investigated whether age, gender and years of service (as control variables), along with sense of coherence, predicted career adaptability.Motivation for the study: The positive psychological construct of career adaptability and its association with call centre agents’ sense of coherence, burnout, age, gender and years of service have not yet been investigated in the call centre environment.Research design, approach and method: A cross-sectional quantitative survey design was used. The Orientation to Life, Career Adapt-Abilities Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory General Scale were administered to a non-probability purposive sample of 409 early-career Black staff employed in three of the largest outsourced financial call centres in Africa.Main findings: Multiple regression analyses revealed that age, gender and meaningfulness significantly predicted call centre agents’ career adaptability, but that their burnout levels do not significantly moderate the sense of coherence–career adaptability relationship.Practical/managerial implications: Enhancing call centre agents’ sense of meaningfulness will increase their levels of career adaptability and career wellbeing.Contribution/value-add: This research is the first to investigate the construct of career adaptability in the call centre environment and adds new knowledge and insights to the existing wellness and positive psychology literature.

With the diversity of learners, identifying their multiple intelligences and vocabulary levels has a significant contribution to the academe. The study, which employed mixed methods, aimed to determine the multiple intelligences and the vocabulary level of the teacher education students enrolled in a state university in the Philippines. The quantitative data were obtained using the MIDAS-24 and the validated vocabulary test; while the qualitative data were obtained from interviews and some documents. The numerical data were processed considering the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and ANOVA, using the SPSS software. The text data were subjected to qualitative analysis, such as documentation, and coding and categorization. The findings revealed the following: (a) considering the multiple intelligence(s) they possessed, the students were grouped into seven clusters, where the most number of them had interpersonal intelligence; (b) when considered as a whole and when classified according to their multiple intelligences, they had an “average” vocabulary level, or they had a limited vocabulary; and (c) no significant difference existed in their vocabulary levels when grouped according to multiple intelligence classification. The results then served as bases on the development of instructional materials designed to complement the students' multiple intelligences and to improve their vocabulary. Keywords-Education, multiple intelligences, vocabulary level, teacher education students, mixed methods, Philippines

Occupational stress has been attracting the attention of the researchers since very long now. Decline in performance and productivity as well as an undesirable shift in the work attitude of the employees are just few of its undesirable outcomes. Bureaucracy in India comprises of a fleet of government officials who are employed at both Central and State level. The purpose of the present study was to empirically investigate occupational stress in Indian Bureaucracy and to compare the same on the basis of length of service. Job satisfaction, Resilience and Emotional Intelligence of Indian bureaucrats were also analyzed and compared on the said basis. A sample of 120 civil servants was taken for this study. Four different psychometric scales were used to measure the four variables. Occupational stress levels, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Job Satisfaction were compared across three levels of administrative hierarchy, i.e. Short (less than 10 years of service), Medium (10 to 20 years of service), and Long (more than 20 years of service). Significant difference was found in stress levels across three levels of administrative hierarchy, wherein officers in Short service category exhibited the least amount of stress, while those in Long service category showed the highest amount of stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand in depth the various factors contributing to the occupational stress in Indian bureaucrats.

The Philippines is one of the major producers of tilapia, the most cultured fish and widely consumed in the world. Although fishes in general is said to be adapted to various stressful conditions, the effect on several cellular immune parameters may be of interest to determine the capacity of the organism to withstand stressors. In this paper, the effect of unleaded petroleum on the splenic macrophage aggregate (MA) formation was studied. This was done to have an overview of the immune response of Tilapia or fishes in general when an oil spill, which almost occur annually at different parts of the world, happen. Histological analysis assessed the area occupied by splenic MA 24 hours after introduction of unleaded petroleum to the aquatic system. To determine whether Mabuhay balls, a technology that claims to be beneficial in terms of improving water quality, was added to one tank (T1) to be able to compare it with another tank (T2). There is a strong statistically significant difference between the groups at day1 (p=0.000) opposite the result of day 6 (p=0.155). Thus, unleaded petroleum increased MA formation, a sign that may indicate a high immune activity as an initial positive response to stress. Mabuhay ball have lessen the mortality but has no effect on splenic MA formation.
