Aim. To study the prevalence of abdominal obesity in young people aged 25–44 years in Novosibirsk, as well as the prevalence of diseases and pathological conditions in individuals with abdominal obesity.Materials and methods. We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based study of the population of Novosibirsk aged 25–44 years. The screening examined 1,415 people, including 670 men and 745 women. For all individuals, we evaluated the presence of such conditions as abdominal obesity (AO), arterial hypertension (AH), increased body mass index (BMI), coronary heart disease (according to validated epidemiologic and functional criteria with ECG findings classified according to the Minnesota Code), diabetes mellitus (DM), reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), chronic bronchitis (CB), increased blood levels of total cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia).Results. The prevalence of AO in the population of Novosibirsk aged 25–44 years was 42.4%: in men – 42.7%, in women – 42.1%. We found that AO had a significant direct effect on the development of AH (odds ratio (OR) = 2.550, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.899–3.422, p = 0.0001), CB (OR = 1.830, CI 1.326–2.527, p = 0.0001), hypercholesterolemia (OR = 1.486, CI 1.193–1.851, p = 0.0001), hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (OR = 1.527, CI 1.222–1.907, p = 0.0001) and a reverse effect on reduced GFR (OR = 0.603, CI 0.427–0.852, p = 0.004). In the male population under 45 years of age, AO had a significant direct effect on the development of AH, CB, hypercholesterolemia, and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia. In the female population under the age of 45, AO had a significant direct effect on the development of DM, AH, CB, and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia and a reverse effect on the reduced GFR development.Conclusion. Therefore, in the young Siberian population under 45 years of age, abdominal obesity is associated with the development of common diseases and pathological conditions.

Abstract Background: Considering the importance of the hand hygiene behaviors for the prevention of COVID-19 transmission, the current study was conducted to investigate the changes in hand-washing behaviors and its related factors among the northern Iranian population during the first peak and subsidence of COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during two periods in Guilan (Northern provinces of Iran). First period conducted at the first peak of COVID-19 pandemic in Iran (between 03/23/2020 and 03/30/2020), and second period conducted at the first subsidence of COVID-19 pandemic in Iran (between 05/3/20 and 05/10/2020). The questionnaire was completed by 571 adult participants. Data on frequency, procedure and circumstances of hand-washing and obsessive-like behaviors were collected. Potential correlates of reduction in frequency of hand washing were analyzed by multiple logistic regression.Result: Compared to peak of COVID-19 pandemic, frequency and procedure of hand-washing and obsessive-like behaviors were significantly reduced at the subsidence of COVID-19 pandemic (all p<0.05). Females with negative family history of coronavirus disease had greater odds (Adjusted Odds Ratio = 2.19, P =0.03) of reduction in the frequency of daily hand-washing. Younger than 50 years old males and males who reduced the procedure of hand-washing had greater odds (AOR = 1.71, P =0.02 and AOR = 2.16, P =0.001, respectively) of reduction in the frequency of daily hand-washing. Conclusion: Northern Iranian populations were found to decrease their frequency and quality of hand washing and obsessive-like behaviors over time from the first peak to first subsidence of COVID-19 pandemic. Here, the factors that independently predicted reduction in frequency of hand washing in male population were younger age and reduction in procedure of hand-washing and in female population was a negative family history of coronavirus disease. Thus, special attention should be paid to maintaining the general population’s perceived susceptibility to illness, especially in younger men during the pandemic.

Aim To study blood adipokines spectrum in people aged 25–44 years with early ischemic heart disease (IHD), including that associated with abdominal obesity (AO).Material and methods A cross-sectional study was performed on a random sample of the population aged 25–44 years in Novosibirsk. 1457 subjects (653 men, 804 women) were evaluated. This study included 123 people divided into four study subgroups: subgroup 1, with IHD associated with AO (n=24); subgroup 2, with IHD and without AO (n=25); subgroup 3, without IHD and with AO (n=44); and subgroup 4, without either IHD or AO (n=30). Concentrations of serum adipokines were measured simultaneously by multiplex assay with a Luminex MAGPIX flow fluorometer and by immune enzyme assay with a MULTISCAN analyzer. Results Subjects with early IHD had lower blood concentrations of adipsin and visfatin than subjects without IHD. Subjects with early IHD associated with AO had higher blood concentrations of adipsin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and leptin and lower concentrations of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and visfatin compared to subjects with early IHD and without AO. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that lower blood concentrations of MCP-1 were associated with a likelihood of early IHD.Conclusion In young people aged 25–44 years, lower blood concentrations of MCP-1 were associated with a likelihood of early IHD, including that associated with AO.

Purpose:Weight status-referenced pedometer step-count guidelines for young people have been developed for populations from high-income countries and may not be applicable to middle- and low-income countries. The objectives of this study were 1) to develop cut-off points for pedometer-determined step count in young Brazilians using waist circumference (WC) as a reference criterion, and 2) to analyze the capacity of previous recommendations to discriminate abdominal obesity in the sample studied. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,044 schoolchildren (456 boys) aged 6–17 years from Northeastern Brazil. WC was measured and daily step counts were determined with a pedometer. Results:The area under the curve (AUC) of step count was significant for boys (AUC = 0.55; 95%CI: 0.50–0.59) and girls (AUC = 0.57; 95%CI: 0.53–0.61). Our cut-off points (14,414 and 11,355 steps for boys and girls, respectively) were more balanced in terms of sensitivity and specificity compared with previous recommendations. The use of previous guidelines to classify step count in the sample provided very low sensitivity or specificity and wide variation in the prevalence of insufficient physical activity (39.3–77.0%).Conclusions:A universal step-count recommendation for young people may not be adequate and specific guidelines seem to be necessary for different countries or regions.

OBJECTIVE To estimate the degree of educational inequality in the occurrence of abdominal obesity in a population of non-faculty civil servants at university campi.METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we used data from 3,117 subjects of both genders aged 24 to 65-years old, regarding the baseline ofPró-Saúde Study, 1999-2001. Abdominal obesity was defined according to abdominal circumference thresholds of 88 cm for women and 102 cm for men. A multi-dimensional, self-administered questionnaire was used to evaluate education levels and demographic variables. Slope and relative indices of inequality, and Chi-squared test for linear trend were used in the data analysis. All analyses were stratified by genders, and the indices of inequality were standardized by age.RESULTS Abdominal obesity was the most prevalent among women (43.5%; 95%CI 41.2;45.9), as compared to men (24.3%; 95%CI 22.1;26.7), in all educational strata and age ranges. The association between education levels and abdominal obesity was an inverse one among women (p < 0.001); it was not statistically significant among men (p = 0.436). The educational inequality regarding abdominal obesity in the female population, in absolute terms (slope index of inequality), was 24.0% (95%CI 15.5;32.6). In relative terms (relative index of inequality), it was 2.8 (95%CI 1.9;4.1), after the age adjustment.CONCLUSIONS Gender inequality in the prevalence of abdominal obesity increases with older age and lower education. The slope and relative indices of inequality summarize the strictly monotonous trend between education levels and abdominal obesity, and it described educational inequality regarding abdominal obesity among women. Such indices provide relevant quantitative estimates for monitoring abdominal obesity and dealing with health inequalities.

Aim. To establish associations of the frequency of detection of clusters and components of the metabolic syndrome (MS) with the prevalence of depression in open male population of moderately urbanized Siberian city.Material and methods. Cross-sectional epidemiological survey included 1000 individuals formed from the election list of males in one of the Tyumen administrative districts. The response rate was 85,0%. MS was assessed using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. A self-administered WHO MONICA-psychosocial questionnaire was used to assess the levels of depression. Statistical analysis was conducted using a package of software program for medical data IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0.Results. In the open population of moderately urbanized Siberian city in men (age 25-64) with depression the following clusters of MS are prevalent: abdominal obesity (AO) + hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) + decrease of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (hypoHDL-C) and AO + hypoHDL-C + arterial hypertension (AH); in the presence of a high level of depression AO + HTG + hypoHDL-C and AO + hypoHDL-C + AH are prevalent. A direct correlation was established between the prevalence of depression and abdominal obesity and hypertension, as well as the prevalence of a high level of depression with HTG and hypo-HDL cholesterol. In the open urban population in men (age 25-64) with high level of depression the following clusters of MS are prevalent: AO + HTG + hypoHDL-C and AO + HTG + hypoHDL-C + AH. We established an increase in the chances of developing a high level of depression with following MS clusters: AO + HTG + hypoHDL-C. According to IDF criteria, the prevalence of MS components in male population (age 25-64) in Tyumen was: AO — 42,6%; AH — 59,8%; hyperglycemia — 17,4%; HTG — 10,5%; hypoHDL-C — 4,6%. With a primary prevalence of MS components in men (age 25-64) with a low level of depression, the prevalence of HTG and hypoHDL-C in open population of moderately urbanized Siberian city prevails in men with high and mean levels of depression.Conclusion. The strategies for MS prevention in men of moderately urbanized city should contain measures to optimize nutrition regarding psychosocial determinants. This is due not only to the wide prevalence of overweight and obesity in Tyumen population but also to dyslipidemia associated with these factors.

To examine prevalence of verbal, physical, and sexual abuses in young elite athletes, a cross sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted during the World Athletics under 20 World Championships. This questionnaire aimed at distinguishing between abuses perpetrated in the context of Athletics from those which were unrelated to Athletics. Four hundred and eighty athletes (52.3%, male) from North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania took part in the electronic anonymous survey. Outside Athletics setting, no gender difference was found for the prevalence of verbal, physical, and sexual abuses. However, 45 males (18% of the male population) and 34 females (15% of the female population) athletes reported sexual abuse. Asian athletes reported a slightly higher rate of sexual abuse; three quarters of them being non-touching abuses. Inside Athletics setting, no gender difference was found for the prevalence of verbal, physical, and non-touching sexual abuses. However, 58 males (23%) and 47 females (21%) reported verbal abuses. Thirty-one males (12%) and 20 females (9%) reported physical abuses, whereas 30 males (12%) and 17 females (7%) reported sexual abuses. Physical abuses were slightly more frequent in Asia and in Africa and less frequent in South America. Sexual abuses inside Athletics also differed over regions, and were unexpectedly twice more frequent than expected in Asia and slightly less frequent than expected in Europe. Friends and partners were identified as the more frequent (>50%) abusers outside or inside the Athletics settings, whereas outside Athletics and inside Athletics, coaches were identified as sexual abuse perpetrators in 8 and 25% of cases, respectively. The prevalence of verbal, physical, or sexual abuses is high but consistent with what has been reported in United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, and Sweden at national level in recreational or elite athletes. Sexual abuse, including touching or penetrative abuses, occurred significantly more often in male athletes when compared to female athletes. This finding invites healthcare and social workers, and policymakers to also consider the risk of sexual abuse of young male athletes in Athletics. These results also call for longitudinal studies on young elite athletes.
