The research sought to identify key qualities associated with successful licensed retail managers, defined as effective, efficient and profitable operators. Through semi-structured in-depth interviews, managers’ views on success criteria, and problems associated with this type of employment, were elicited. The greatest assets were considered to be personal stability, mobility, good health and support from relatives/family. Physical and mental stamina, well-developed interpersonal skills, anticipation, vigilance and attention to detail were also cited. Prior academic attainment was not considered to be crucial to success; hard biodata from application forms did not allow successful managers to be identified.. The greatest problems in the job centred on people management. Reasons for choosing the job included variety, challenge, the need to be with, enjoyment from talking to, entertaining, pleasing and developing others and delivering a service. Elements of emotional intelligence, including commitment and hardiness, were identified as primary success indicators.

PurposeThe customer as an active and engaged value co-creator raises new challenges for theory and practice, especially in the hospitality industry. However, the connection between engagement and co-creation is little studied in the hotel/tourism literature. This paper proposes a connection between customer engagement (CE) and value co-creation frameworks to ascertain and depict the internal actors' activities and factors that foster or hinder guests' co-creation and destruction of value.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers used qualitative methods (35 in-depth interviews, document analysis and four observation sessions) in seven regions of Ghana to explore the customer's perspective. Data were analyzed with NVivo11 within a thematic analysis framework.FindingsThe findings suggest that positive and negative engagement fosters or hinders guests' interactions, which lead to value co-creation or destruction. The research also discovered that negative interactions occasioned by any factor or actor trigger value destruction at multiple stages of the experience journey.Practical implicationsIndustry players can use the framework developed to assess their businesses, explore and reflect on the proposed value they aim to generate, and thus be more aware of how they can better facilitate value co-creation with their consumers and avoid value destruction.Originality/valueThis research proposes a novel connection between customer interactions, engagement and value co-creation to ascertain and depict the internal actors' activities and factors that foster or hinder customers' experience in the hotel/tourism industry.

The aim of this research is to identify the expectations offered by small retail businesses towards local online selling platforms as an innovative tool to ensure their future and the urban sustainability. Based on the previous findings obtained from an analysis of trends, actors and marketplaces operating in the retail sector, sixty semi-structured in-depth interviews have been carried out to Spanish local retail managers and owners. Opportunities and risks faced by local online marketplaces are presented from the perspective of small retail stores. Different attitudes towards online shopping platforms have been identified depending on their size, presence and experience in the online world, which has allowed us to categorize local retail businesses in six groups. Despite the perceptual and attitudinal differences between them, it is concluded that merchants have assumed that the current and future business model goes through the digitalization of their businesses and the selling on e-commerce platforms. The coexistence of the e-marketplace and the physical stores, conducted by the same retailers, could have a positive effect on the urban sustainability: on the one hand, with the economic strengthening and renovation of the historical centers and, on the other, with the maintenance of the population and traditional social relationships.

Abstract This chapter investigates the ways in which tourism planning and policies in Bhutan promote, reinforce and constrain sustainability. The scope of this work covers food and beverage purchasing decisions, human resources, transportation and souvenir sales in the tourism and hospitality industry in Bhutan. To achieve these research objectives, 19 in-depth interviews were conducted with hotel general managers in the main tourism areas of Thimphu and Paro. The findings reveal that, while the controlled nature of tourism in Bhutan certainly protects its residents from the negative excesses of global tourism, numerous policies also impede tourism and hospitality from spreading their benefits more widely. Policy makers in Bhutan would rather adhere to the precautionary principle than allow detrimental practices or risk irreversible impact on Bhutanese culture.

Purpose This study examines the level of awareness about high blood pressure and the role of librarians in the dissemination of health information among residents in Lagos State, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The population comprised high blood pressure patients at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital in Lagos State, Nigeria. A sample of 900 patients was taken from the existing population of high blood pressure patients comprising male and female aged 15-55 years and above. Data for the study were collected through the use of a structured questionnaire. Few in-depth interviews were also conducted to enrich the data from the structured questionnaire. Some descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze the data obtained from the structured questionnaire, while the data obtained from the in-depth interviews were subjected to content analysis. Findings The findings revealed that awareness about high blood pressure was generally low among the study population. It was also discovered that the librarians working in the medical and public libraries in Lagos State provided information services to members of the communities. However, the librarians affirmed that their role in the dissemination of information to the public was inadequate. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to the high blood pressure patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, while the patients attending other hospitals in Lagos State were not included as a result of time factor and lack of funding for the research. The views of the excluded category of patients on the level of awareness of high blood pressure may vary. Originality/value Good health is the bedrock of human development, and awareness is the first step in the battle against the scourge of ill-health. Recognizing the need for increased level of awareness and the value of disseminating useful information are vital to patients in the management of high blood pressure.

Research dedicated to prevention in health matters, specifically that related to the worker in the company and that related to the care of the mother and the child in the framework of family planning. In-depth interviews and surveys were applied to the general, administrative and financial managers of a sample of representative companies of their sector that had a considerable female population. It was sought to determine the perception of managers regarding social benefits, health prevention, family planning and the current offer of prevention services. An attempt was also made to evaluate the current situation of preventive health services in companies. Among other findings, it is found that managers do not have internalized the concept of prevention as a way to avoid the deterioration of the health of workers and, therefore, to increase their productivity. Regarding family planning, they do not conceive it as a form of prevention nor do they manage to clearly establish the relationship between income, nutrition and good health. They are more interested in disease prevention than in well-child control, gynecological control, pregnancy and childbirth.

Abstract Secretion of cortisol in humans peaks in the morning, reflecting robust circadian rhythms, which are essential for homeostasis. To examine the hypothesis that free cortisol levels in the morning can predict general health status, free cortisol and cortisone in urine samples collected from 7813 Japanese older adults upon waking were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS). The ratio of cortisol to cortisone in 5298 urine collected between 6 and 11 AM showed consistent correlations with favorable personal attributes linking to good health. The odds ratio of poor health, as defined by multiple clinical criteria (BMI ≥25, SBP ≥140 mmHg, C-reactive protein ≥0.5 mg/dL, and HbA1c ≥5.6%) or cardio-cerebro-vascular disease history, robustly showed negative associations with the cortisol/cortisone ratio. The free cortisol/cortisone ratio in urine samples collected upon waking is a promising biomarker of good health and might be applicable to a wide range of research and medical settings.

ABSTRACT Rh-isoimmunization still remains an important preventable cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. The improved perinatal outcome in sensitized patients is mainly attributed to application of color Doppler ultrasonography as a noninvasive method of detecting and monitoring fetal anemia and fetal wellbeing, improvement in ultrasonography machines and fetal interventional techniques and better neonatal intensive care facilities. Here, we present a case G3P2L1D, Rh negative with previous lower segment cesarean section (LSCS), diagnosed to be indirect Coomb's test (ICT) positive (1:64) at 9 weeks. She was followed up with serial ICT titers every 2 weeks along with ultrasonography (USG) and Doppler. Fetal anemia was detected with middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler at 27 weeks and same treated with intrauterine transfusions twice. She was diagnosed to have gestational diabetes mellitus and treated for the same. Patient then delivered at 36 weeks and 5 days by emergency LSCS in labor, a healthy girl baby, 3.07 Kg. Postnatally, baby developed jaundice and was treated with double light phototherapy. Baby also developed anemia subsequently 3 days after birth and was treated with one dose of intravenous (IV) immunoglobulin. Baby with mother were discharged on postoperative day 5 in good health.
