SEMANTIC GESTALT OF THE KERNEL OF LANGUAGE CONSCIOUSNESS OF BURYAT-BILINGUALS

The article is devoted to the experience of the comparative analysis of language consciousness content of the Buryat-bilinguals on the example of a semantic Gestalt of basic fields of people, home, life presented in the Buryat and Russian languages. The main aim of the research is identification of ethnocultural specifics and transformation of language consciousness of modern Buryat-bilinguals, knowing Russian and the Buryat language. The analysis is carried out on the basis of the associative dictionary made by the author of the article. The results of the experiment show that semantic zones of both Gestalts in many respects are identical, consisting of five-eight zones of the same name, however their content and hierarchy of arrangement reveal essential differences in images of consciousness of the Buryat-bilinguals - the carriers of two languages. It was confirmed that for the Buryats in their native language a basic valuable dominant is the family. The main differences in the content of knowledge in different languages in many respects are defined by system and structural features of language and a discrepancy of semantic fields. Buryats’ active assimilating Russian led both to assimilation of new lexicon, and to assimilation of the corresponding lexical stereotypes. It is undoubted that foreign-language influence promotes changes in lexical structure and communicative standards of the Buryat language, it transforms its system of culture and valuable. The received results may be used in social-, psycholinguistic researches, linguistics of language contacts.

The article discusses the inscriptions on funerary monuments from the Croatian villages of Cunovo and Jarovce, located in the South of Slovakia, near Bratislava. These inscriptions reflect the complicated sociocultural situation in the region, which is particularly specific due to the fact that this territory was included to Slovakia’s territory only after 1946, while earlier the village was part of Hungary. In addition, the local Croatian ethnic group was actively in close contact with the German and Hungarian communities. At the same time, the orthographic norms of the literary Croatian, German, Hungarian, and Slovak languages, which could potentially be owned by the authors of the inscriptions, differ in many ways, despite the Latin alphabet used on all the gravestones. All this is reflected in the tombstones, representing a high degree of mixing codes. The article identifies the main types of fusion on the monuments: separate orthograms, writing the maiden name of the deceased in the spelling of her native language, the traditional spelling of the family name. In addition, the mixing of codes can be associated with writing feminitives, also order of name and surname within the anthroponym. Moreover, the settlements themselves represent different ethnic groups coexistence within the village. Gravestones from the respective cemeteries also differ from each other in the nature of the prevailing trend of the mixing codes. In Jarovce, where the ethnic groups live compactly, fusion is often presented as a separate foreign language orthograms. In Cunovo, where the ethnic groups constitute a global conglomerate, more traditional presents for a specific family spelling of the names on the monument.

Limited studies have been conducted on the effects on recreational reading in native language on foreign language learning, whereas no findings exist on the effects of recreational reading in Turkish as a native language (L1) on English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effects of recreational reading in L1 on the process of learning EFL. The sample group consists of 70 learners and a background questionnaire, interviews, oral presentations, classroom discussions, essay papers, and responses to examination questions were used for data collection. The results indicated that recreational reading in L1 has some significant contributions to EFL learning although it has some negative effects.

The paper analyzes the dynamics of changes in language attitudes and values of the modern family. The authors remark that under present-day conditions the ability of a family to raise a multilingual personality orientated to mastering and preserving native language is determined by its social well-being. The article presents a comparative analysis of the data of the conducted studies for a two-year period. The authors reach a conclusion that a high degree of openness of young generations to the powerful information flows of the multilingual world requires the multifunctional institution of the family to effectively implement the process of socialization in relation to the formation of language attitudes and values among young people.

The article deals with the method of comparative analysis of literary texts and their translations in course of learning foreign languages. Some of the typical lexical-semantic and syntactical differences between Italian and Russian languages are demonstrated based on the material from contemporary Italian writer A. Baricco’s works “Ocean sea” and “Novecento” and their Russian translations. Main conclusions consider the effectiveness of the comparative method in achieving student’s knowledge of lexical and syntactical differences between foreign and native language.

Abstract Providing adequate speech therapy services to Latinos who stutter can present challenges that are not obvious to the practicing clinician. This article addresses cultural, religious, and foreign language concerns to the therapeutic relationship between the Latino client and the clinician. Suggestions are made for building cross-cultural connections with clients and incorporating the family into a collaborative partnership with the service provider.

Abstract. Eye movements of children (Grade 5-6) and adults were monitored while they were watching a foreign language movie with either standard (foreign language soundtrack and native language subtitling) or reversed (foreign language subtitles and native language soundtrack) subtitling. With standard subtitling, reading behavior in the subtitle was observed, but there was a difference between one- and two-line subtitles. As two lines of text contain verbal information that cannot easily be inferred from the pictures on the screen, more regular reading occurred; a single text line is often redundant to the information in the picture, and accordingly less reading of one-line text was apparent. Reversed subtitling showed even more irregular reading patterns (e.g., more subtitles skipped, fewer fixations, longer latencies). No substantial age differences emerged, except that children took longer to shift attention to the subtitle at its onset, and showed longer fixations and shorter saccades in the text. On the whole, the results demonstrated the flexibility of the attentional system and its tuning to the several information sources available (image, soundtrack, and subtitles).

Subject This article deals with the issues of determining the level of financial literacy, identifying problems, and comparing the financial literacy rates of the population of different areas. Objectives The article aims to identify territorial differences in the overall level of financial literacy of the population of the Northwestern Federal District regions and study the prevalence of problems related to the family budget, using financial products, and risk. Methods For the study, we used a sociological survey and an original methodology for indexing the level of financial literacy of the population based on the methodology of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, taking into account the adults' financial competence system proposed by the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. Results The article determines the level of financial literacy of the Northwestern Federal District population and identifies similar problems for the District's regions. Conclusions A comparative analysis of the components of financial literacy of the four regions reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each of them. This will help adjust financial literacy programmes being implemented in some regions and developed in others.
