Twilight Series

The aims of the study are to analyze the translations of compliment in subtitle film Twilight Series between source text (English) and target text (Indonesian). To identify classifications of compliment in source text and target text, to identify shifting type of compliment, to identify the translations techniques, and to describe translation quality result in target text subtitle film Twilight Series.This study is a descriptive, qualitative research. Sources of the data are subtitle film Twilight Series in source text (English) and target text (Indonesian). The data are word, phrase, sentence, and clause forms which is contained compliment speech act discussed by informants to describe the translation quality. Techniques of collecting data are document analysis, and Forum Group discussion (FGD). Purposive sampling is applied in this research.Findings of this research show the followings. Classification form (reactive-unsolicited-direct-explicit) 1.5%, (reactive-unsolicited-indirect-implicit-presupposed) 1.5 %, (initiative-solicited-direct-explicit) 1.5 5%, (initiative-unsolicited-direct-explicit) 32.8%, (initiative-unsolicited-direct-implicit-presupposed) 12.5%, (initiative-unsolicited-direct-implicit-implied) 1.5%, (initiative-unsolicited-indirect-explicit) 1.5 %, (initiative-unsolicited-indirect-implicit-presupposed) 46.8 %. the translations techniques consist of establish equivalent, variation, reduction, literal, pure borrowing, linguistic compression, modulation, and discursive creation. Pragmatic Shifting type are meaning and classification form.The translation quality values score 2.75 for Accuracy, 2.94 for Acceptability, 3 point for Readability. The average value of translation quality of compliment speech act in subtitle film Twilight Series is 2.85, so it can be said that translation quality is good. Tindak tutur komisif merupakan salah satu aspek pragmatik yang harus diperhatikan oleh penerjemah ketika menerjemahkan teks. Hal itu dilakukan agar menghasilkan terjemahan yang berkualitas dari aspek keakuratan dan keberterimaan. Berdasarkan alasan tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan mendiskripsikan tingkat keakuratan dan keberterimaan terjemahan kalimat yang mengakomodasi tindak tutur komisif dengan pendekatan pragmatik. Data yang digunakan ialah tuturan komisif dan hasil penilaian kualitas terjemahan. Data bersumber dari novel Insurgent karya Veronica Roth dan informan. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara analisis dokumen, kuesioner dan Focus Group Discussion. Selanjutnya, data dianalisis dengan cara analisis domain, taksonomi, komponensial, dan tema budaya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terjemahan dalam novel Insurgent mempunyai nilai keakuratan dan keberterimaan yang cukup tinggi. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa tingkat keakuratan dan keberterimaan pada setiap jenis tindak tutur komisif memiliki dampak terhadap kualitas keseluruhan terjemahan kalimat yang mengandung tindak tutur komisif.Commissive speech act is one of the pragmatic aspects to regard by the translator in translating the text. It aims to produce a qualified translation in regarding accuracy and acceptability aspects. According to the aspects, this research aims to describe accuracy and acceptability of translation in sentences which accommodate commissive speech act using pragmatic approach. The data used is commissive speech and qualitative translation value result. The sources of the data are an Insurgent novel by Veronica Roth and informants. The data were collected through document analysis, questionnaire, and Focus Group Discussion then analyzed the domain, taxonomic, componential analysis, and cultural theme. The result shows that translation in the Insurgent novel has high accuracy and acceptability values. This research concludes that the accuracy and acceptability level in each commissive speech act has an impact on quality of whole translated sentences which contain commissive speech act.

This study investigates the technique of translating mechanical engineering terms from Indonesian to English in accredited national journal abstracts and the quality of the translation results. Qualitative descriptive is used as a research method. The abstracts taken as data are from the national journals accredited in 2019 and 2020, consisting of 59 articles. In collecting data, document analysis is used as a tool to collect data. The results showed that adaptation techniques, common equivalent techniques, literal translation techniques, calque techniques, and pure borrowing techniques are techniques used in translating mechanical engineering terms, and the average value of the quality of the translation results is good. This study aims at identifying conjunction shifts and their impact on the translation quality of Orwell’s Animal Farm in accuracy and acceptability aspects. This descriptive qualitative research is an embedded-cased study and oriented to translation products. The data were collected by document analysis and focus group discussion and then analyzed by Spradley’s data analysis method. The results show that 207 data of conjunction shifts in terms of form, expression, function, major classification meaning, categorical meaning, and sub-categorical meaning affect translation quality. The assessment of translation quality of conjunctions that shifted in the translation of the novel Animal Farm results in an average accuracy score of 2.09 and an average acceptability score of 2.84. Even though they are less accurate, the translation results of conjunctions that shifted in the translation of the novel are quite acceptable. This implies that translators should master on form, expression, function, and meaning of conjunctions so as to produce a good quality translation result.

ABSTRACT This research discusses about how a certain technique can impact on the quality of translation in the statements of responding toward arguing speech act. It aims to determine the impact of choosing a certain micro technique of translation toward the quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research can be classified as a descriptive qualitative research which focuses on a single case. The source data of this research is the novel Allegiant, its translation in Indonesian, and the two raters. Then, the data are collected from the statement that responds toward arguing. Furthermore, Focus Group Discussion that has been done by two raters and the researcher is used to assess the three aspects of translation quality and determine the micro technique that has been applied to translate the statement that responds arguing speech act. The result of this research is that the application of micro technique of translation that is mostly applied is established equivalent technique that has been applied 172 data 52,9 % that has been influenced the quality of translation because he total average of quality translation is 2,97 that is considered as a good translation. In other words, the establish equivalent has a good impact toward quality of translation toward statement that responds of arguing speech act.

This research aims is to describe: (1) kinds of positive politeness markers in The Host novel, (2) translation techniques are used in the sentence that represent speech act of positive politeness in The Host novel, (3) the effects of the translation techniques which used by translators in sentences which represent politeness positive against the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. The sources of data are the dialogues of The Host novel which represent positive politeness and also informants who assess the quality of the translation. Data were collected by the using analyzing of documents, questionnaires, and forum group discussion (FGD). Data are analyzed by using Spradley’s ethnography method.The result of this research shows that there are 15 kinds of positive politeness strategy markers on The Host novel. The most dominating positive politeness strategy of this data is sub-strategy of use in-group identity marker, as much as 22,49% of the data. In this research, the translation techniques consist of the application of single translation techniques as much as 102 times, 136 times as many as couplets varian, varian of triplets as many as 34 times, and varian of quartets 2 times. The translation quality from 263 data (95,64%) include as accurate translation and 12 data (4,36%) are less accurate translation, then 231 data (84%) includes as acceptable translation, and 44 data (16%) are less acceptable translation. The majority of translation techniques have contributed positively to translation quality of The Host novel.Keywords: positive politeness, translation tehniques, translation quality

Fifty Shades Of Grey

This research is aimed to: (1) identify the kinds of euphemism sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel, (2) identify the translation techniques used by the translator in translating sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, (3) describe the impact of translation technique which applied by the translator toward translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. Sources of data are Fifty Shades of Grey novel and also informans who assess the quality of the translation. Data were collected by using document analysis, questionnaires, and focus group discussion (FGD). Data were analyzed by using Spradley’s ethnography method.The result of this research shows that there are 10 kinds of euphemism in sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel . The most dominating euphemism sexual organ of this data is general for specific with the percentation as many as 47.14%, while in sexual activity, the most dominating euphemism is hyperbole with percentation 29.37%. In this research there are thirteen techniques which used by the translator to translate sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, the technique which dominates is established equivalent with the percentation 47.43%. For the translation quality, 117 data (59,7%) were accurately translated, 66 data (33,7%) were less accurately translated 13 data (6,6%)were not accurately translated and there were 112 data (57,1%) identified as acceptable translation, 74 data (37,8%) are less acceptable translation, and 10 data (5,1%) are not acceptable translation.The conclusion of this research shows that lots of euphemisms were found in Fifty Shades of Grey novel and some of translation techniques have negative impact towards the translation quality of Fifty Shades of Grey novel. This research only uses euphemism sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel. The other reference of euphemism can be used as the data for further research. The aims of this study are to identify the type of address terms found in an English novel entitled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The lightning thief, to identify translation techniques used by the Indonesian translator to translate the address terms, and to describe translation quality of address terms in the novel entitled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The lightning thief.It is a qualitative study of which data are words and phrases accommodating address terms in English as source text and it’s translation as target text. The data were collected through content analysis and focus group discussion. The collected data were then analyzed based on data analysis model which is proposed by Spradley.There are 15 types of address term found in the novel. The translator uses established equivalent to translate type of address terms in the novel, such as title, generic first name, mockery name, etc. She also uses pure borrowing to translate first name, diminutive name, last name, etc. The accuracy and the acceptability of the translation of the address terms are quite high. It is a result of the application of established equivalent technique and pure borrowing.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi fungsi pertanyaan retoris dan mendeskripsikan kualitas terjemahan, khususnya pada tingkat keberterimaan dalam novel Five On A Treasure Island karya Enid Blyton dan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Indonesia Lima Sekawan Di Pulau Harta yang diterjemahkan oleh Agus Setiadi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu kualitatif deskriptif melalui analisis konten dan focus group discussion (FGD). Hasil temuan pada penelitian ini terdapat 14 fungsi pertanyaan retoris dari 177 data yang ditemukan, yaitu memastikan (71 data), menunjukkan rasa heran/kaget (36 data), menekankan fakta yang sudah diketahui (12 data), menyarankan (11 data), mengajak (10 data), menunjukkan keragu-raguan/ketidakpastian (8 data), menunjukkan kekaguman (8 data), memerintah (6 data), meminta (4 data), menunjukkan rasa marah (3 data), menunjukkan kebingungan (3 data), mengeluh (2 data), memperkenalkan topik baru (2 data), dan mengingatkan (1 data). Terdapat 9 fungsi baru pertanyaan retoris yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini yang sebelumnya belum disebutkan oleh Larson (1998) dan hasil FGD menunjukkan bahwa kualitas terjemahan pertanyaan retoris, khususnya tingkat keberterimaan, menghasilkan terjemahan dengan kualitas yang cukup baik atau berterima. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pertanyaan retoris merepresentasikan banyak fungsi dalam sebuah percakapan dan untuk penerjemah, dalam menerjemahkan pertanyaan retoris sebaiknya memahami maksud pertanyaan retoris pada teks bahasa sumber dengan baik. Kata kunci: pertanyaan retoris, penerjemahan, kualitas terjemahan, keberterimaan AbstractThis study aims to identify the function of rhetorical questions and to describe the quality of the translation in terms of acceptability on the novel of Five On A Treasure Island by Enid Blyton and its Indonesian translation Lima Sekawan Di Pulau Harta translated by Agus Setiadi. The research method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative with content analysis and focus group discussion (FGD). The findings are: there are 14 functions of rhetorical questions from 177 data identified, namely: to confirm (71 data), to show surprise (36 data), emphasize a known fact (12 data), to suggest (11 data), to persuade (10 data), to show uncertainty (8 data), to show amazement (8 data), to command (6 data), to request (4 data), to show angry (3 data), to show confusion (3 data), to complain (2 data), to introduce a new topic (2 data), and to admonish (1 data). There are 9 new functions of rhetorical questions that have not been identified from Larson’s concept (1998) and from FGD shows the quality of rhetorical questions translation in terms of acceptability of the novel is high quality translation. The results of this study is rhetorical question represents many functions in conversation and the translator should be wisely in understanding the intention of rhetorical questions in the source text. This research discusses about the types of responding of requesting speech act used in the novel the Heroes of Olympus Series, describes the translation techniques usage and assess the translation quality in terms of acceptability. This research can be classified as a descriptive qualitative research which focuses on a single case. The source data of this research are the documents and persons, i.e. the novel The Heroes of Olympus series and those called raters who have competencies in assessing translation quality. The methods to collect and analyze the data of responding of requesting speech act were applied content analysis and Forum Group Discussion. The result of this research shows the discovery of 11 types of responding of requesting speech act such as agreeing, commenting, informing, explaining, committing, etc. Based on the techniques that are proposed by Molina Albir (2002), there are 17 translation techniques found in this research, which is, from the analysis of 89 data of responding of requesting speech act in source text and target text, found 564 times the use of its translation techniques. And, in general, the resulting of translation quality in the form of acceptability assessment in this study tends to be good because the average is 2.86, with the majority of applying Establish equivalent technique that gives a positive impact on the translation quality.

This research discusses the quality of questioning response utterances found in the novel Me Before You and its translation. This aims to describe (1) the types of questioning response utterances, (2) the translation quality of questioning response utterances based on accuracy and acceptability aspects. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative research which focuses on a single case. The source data of this research is the novel Me Before You and the Indonesian translation version. The data focus on questioning response utterances. The data are collected with using document analysis, questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion. Furthermore, the data is analyzed the domain, taxonomic, componential analysis and cultural theme. The results of this research is the types of question response utterances based on Searle’s theory is variation such as assertive, directive, commissive and expressive. Then, the quality of questioning response utterances is accurate and acceptable.
