AbstractThe objectives of this study are to measure levels of students’ anxiety and to see whether anxiety affects academic their performance. The participants of the study were drawn from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Addis Ababa University (AAU). The study used primary and secondary data and descriptive and inferential statistics. The inferential statistics was made in terms of one-way ANOVA. The results of the study showed that freshman students were anxious, and the level of anxiety affected the performance of the students. It was also found that anxiety and achievement have curvilinear relationships. Ameliorating strategies implied from the findings were also suggested

Some aspects of teaching effective reading to first-year students studying English as their major at faculties of foreign languages in universities are considered. A broad range of blended extensive and intensive reading strategies, techniques and exercises are suggested at the pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading stages, which makes it possible to develop learners’ skills not only in reading for gist, but also for detailed comprehension. The main focus of the research is on reading techniques such as making predictions about the content of the text based on the title, subtitles and keywords; removing barriers to students’ understanding the text by using such monolingual ways of presenting vocabulary as matching words to their definitions, synonyms or opposites, guessing from context, explanation and others. Tasks directed at extracting some information from the text and analyzing its structure as well as exercises designed to use the extracted information in speaking and writing, which are connected with reading as a communication skill, are presented in the article. Some aspects of using techniques of expeditious reading, skimming and scanning, which enable first year students to vary the speed of reading and help them use reading materials effectively are treated.

The article is made in the framework of the study of psychological and pedagogic factors of adaptation of students who have started to attend a higher education institution. These include ceremony of initiation in the student life, that is still little considered in pedagogic theory and practice. In our research we realised identification implicitly of the academic traditions presented in activity of higher education institution.. On an experimental basis, it is proved that the organised introduction of students into academic traditions leads to an improvement, compared with students with whom such work is not carried out, adaptation to environment of a higher education institution, situational anxiety, subjective satisfaction with learning at a higher education institution, and academic success.

Objective. This study assessed the initial experiences, symptoms, and actions of patients in Ethiopia ultimately determined to have breast cancer.Methods. 69 participants in a comprehensive breast cancer treatment program at the main national cancer hospital in Ethiopia were interviewed using mixed qualitative and quantitative approaches. Participants’ narratives of their initial cancer experience were coded and analyzed for themes around their symptoms, time to seeking advice, triggers for action, and contextual factors. The assessment was approved by the Addis Ababa University Faculty of Medicine Institutional Review Board.Results. Nearly all women first noticed lumps, though few sought medical advice within the first year (average time to action: 1.5 years). Eventually, changes in their symptoms motivated most participants to seek advice. Most participants did not think the initial lump would be cancer, nor was a lump of any particular concern until symptoms changed.Conclusion. Given the frequency with which lumps are the first symptom noticed, raising awareness among participants that lumps should trigger medical consultation could contribute significantly to more rapid medical advice-seeking among women in Ethiopia. Primary care sites should be trained and equipped to offer evaluation of lumps so that women can be referred appropriately for assessment if needed.

This publication is a detailed lesson plan on the topic “Power and Money” within the course of the English language taught as the second foreign language to the first-year students majoring in the oriental languages. The lesson focuses on enhancing topical vocabulary through practicing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. It also aims at developing students’ skills of reasoning and evaluative judgment. The tasks are introduced in the plan in accordance with the principles of the contemporary communicative student-oriented approach to teaching foreign languages.

<p>In line with the increasingly waning of the State borders in trade and business, then currently many trade and business agreements in Indonesia are made or entered into inforeign languages. The law has in principle governed the language of the agreement, in which the Law requires the use of the Indonesian language as the primary language of the agreement, while the secondary language may use language understood by those who do not understand the Indonesian language. The problems a rise when the parties to the agreement do not understand the language arrangements provided for by this law and use Foreign languages as the primary language even further as the only language used in an agreement. This is certainly contrary to the provisions of the law and vulnerable to create new legal problems. The method used is jurical normative, amethod that examines the application of principles or norms in positive law, which examines the legal force of agreement made in private form in a foreign language. The data used are secondary data consisting of primary, secondary and tertiary legal materials. With regard to data analysis was done by using juridical qualitative analysis method. The legal theory used is the legal certainty theory according to Jan Michiel Otto and Substantiation Theory. The results of this study is an agreement made or entered into ina foreign language has no legal substantiation before a Courtof law as they are contrary to the provisions of Article 31 of Law Number 24 of 2009. There fore the legal consequences of an agreement made in private form in a foreign language is considered to be null and void, and as a consequence, such agreement is considered never to exist.</p>

Knowledge of foreign languages constitutes one of the key competencies amongst graduates of the Bachelor of Economics. In the era of globalisation, the importance of a high level of proficiency in foreign languages has become self-evident. The empirical part of this article is devoted to the analysis of the most common language mistakes committed by first-year students of the B1 group of Marketing and Management at the University of Economics in Krakow. A portion of the final exams submitted by a group of 13 students has been analyzed. The study focuses on the identification and classification of errors and presents the frequency distribution, as percentages, of errors in individual categories. The author's intention is not to indicate the causes of errors and their assessment, but to present the problems faced by students of the Bachelor of Economics, who learn ‘business language’, which a specialism within the German language studies. The results of the study might act as a starting point for the development of appropriate educational materials to support the process of teaching a wide variety of German language courses.

The transition to college is associated with significant changes in social support networks and concomitant increases in depressive symptoms. First-year students who are more socially engaged within their new academic settings may experience greater overall wellbeing. Behavioral activation (BA) is an evidence-based intervention which promotes individuals’ engagement with valued activities and has been examined as a possible primary prevention for depressive symptoms among first-year students. Yet, the important role of social adjustment, and its impact on students’ activity level, has not yet been considered. The current study is a secondary data analysis of research evaluating a BA-based intervention embedded into a first-year orientation course. The aim of the project was to evaluate the efficacy of BA on improving social adjustment and the effect of social adjustment on subsequent depressive symptoms. A diverse sample of college students ( n = 71) attending a state university in the mid-Atlantic region reported on their levels of depression, behavioral activation, and social adjustment. Students then received either BA or standard programming. Results suggest that improved engagement in valued activities at mid-intervention was associated with increases in students’ perceptions of their own social adjustment. This, in turn, predicted steeper decreases in rates of depressive symptoms post-intervention. Findings also indicate that greater social adjustment improved the efficacy of a BA-based intervention in reducing depressive symptoms, but had no impact on depressive symptoms for students receiving the standard orientation programming.

Learner autonomy plays a vital role in the success of language education. The specific purpose of this study is to investigate the views English majored first year students regarding the students‟ awareness of the importance of learner autonomy as well as the practice of autonomous activities inside and outside the classroom at Faculty of Foreign Languages ( FFL) of Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City ( IUH). This study was conducted with two instruments: questionnaire and interview. The questionnaires were completed to elicit responses from 100 participants who were English majored freshmen at FFL. At the same time, the writer also made two interviews with teachers who were teaching freshmen. There are four conclusions that are obtained from the findings and discussion. First of all, the majority of the participants in the research have intrinsic motivation when practicing autonomous activities for their learning. Secondly, most of them are aware of the importance of learner autonomy in learning English. And the third finding is about students‟ strategies in their own learning English. The result indicates that most of the students usually practice listening when they practice language outside the classroom. Finally, it is found that both of the two teachers in the research suppose that 90% of English major freshman at IUH have good perception of learner autonomy, which is a very positive signal for the language learning process.
