Dual banking system in Indonesia provides an excellent opportunity for the growth of Islamic banking industry in Indonesia. Islamic banking industry in Indonesia has improved in number of banks and branches but the performance of Islamic banks has decreased in recent years. This paper measures the efficiency of Islamic banking in Indonesia using the intermediation approach and the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) on quarterly reports of 10 Islamic Banks (BUS) and 15 Islamic Business Units (UUS). The results showed that Islamic Banks (BUS) and Islamic Business Units (UUS) in Indonesia has not been operating efficiently in its intermediation function. The estimation results of data panel regression model showed total financing and CAR have positive and significant impact, whereas the deposits have negative and significant impact to the efficiency of BUS and UUS in Indonesia.

The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect of macroeconomic factors toward efficiency in Islamic and Conventional Banking. Banking as one of components in financial system that highly contributes to the growth and development of the economy in a country, especially after establishment of the first Islamic bank in Indonesia at the year of 1992. Afterwards, Islamic banking began to develop and start to compete with conventional banking. Hence, in order to survive and do fair competitiveness, Islamic and Conventional banking have to maintain its efficiency. This study uses the methodology of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This study also analyze the macroeconomics factors namely inflation, interest rate of Bank indonesia and the growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which affects the bank efficiency. Our data is obtained from annual financial statement published by each islamic and conventional bank and Bank Indonesia starting from 2007 to 2016. This study shows that conventional banks have higher efficiency than Islamic banks, while crisis in 2008 had no significant effect on the efficiency of Islamic and conventional banking. However, a decrease in the level of efficiency that occurs in conventional banking indicates that conventional banking is more sensitive to the crisis.

Abstract According to The Act No. 21 of 2008 concerning Islamic Banking in Indonesia, the conventional banks are obligated to spun-off their Islamic business units after achieving a certain set of requirements. The spin-off requirements are: (i) reach 50% market share asset of its parents; or (ii) 15 years after the implementation of the Islamic Banking Act. This study emphasizes the impact of Islamic banks' spin-off on market share. The method used in this study is a difference in difference analysis. This technique is a quasi-experiment separate into two groups, such as the treatment groups (four spin-offs' banks) and control group (two fullfledged Islamic banks). This study used quarterly data from 2005 until 2016. The results show that, first, there is a difference in the Islamic banks' market share between pre- and post-spinoff. Second, there is a difference in the market share of spin-offs' banks between pre- and postspin- off. Third, there are there external factors that can affect the Islamic banks' market share, i.e., inflation rate, interest rate, and economic growth rate. The paper is a useful source of information that may provide relevant guidelines in helping the future development of spin-off activity in Islamic banking industry. The finding could be helpful for policymakers to create a supporting strategy to accelerate the development of Islamic banking industry. This result also could be of use for Islamic banking industries in other countries.

This study aims to examine the effect of CAMEL framework on depositor’s fund of Indonesian Islamic banks. The study uses a sample of 11 Islamic commercial banks and 24 Islamic business units’. It used depositors fund as the endogenous variable, and some components of CAMEL such as capital adequacy, assets quality, operational efficiency, profitability, and liquidity as exogenous variables. An econometric model was established and parameters are estimated based on the secondary data obtained from Islamic banking statistics-Bank of Indonesia database for five years (2010-2015). The results of the paper conclude that capital adequacy ratio and liquidity are significant and positively correlated to Islamic deposits, while nonperforming financing is significant but negatively related to the Islamic depositor’s fund. On the other hand, profitability and operational efficiency are not to be significant influence on the depositor’s fund. Finally, the statement of theory proved that good Islamic banks performance provided positive image and confidence in Islamic banking system.

Indonesia is among the few countries that adopts dual banking system where Islamic banks run in parallel and compete with conventional banks. Although under such a system banking competition would be expected to be high, data tend to show the opposite case, as three Islamics banks acquired 65 percent of market share in Indonesia. This study, therefore, attempts to determine the degree of banking competition in Indonesia by employing the Panzar-Rosse Model for 2003-2008 period. The study also analyses the competitive behaviors of Islamic banks and compares it with those of its conventional counterparts. The estimated model suggests that monopolistic competition exists in the overall banking industry—the degree is even slightly higher for Islamic banking, where the market is characterized by aggressive competition for funding, quality human resources, and financing. Such competition occurs due to, among others, small market size, low consumer base, lack of product variations, and lack of competent human resources. These should be a major concern for all Islamics banking stakeholders for developing a better Islamic banking industry, particularly in Indonesia.

This study measures and compares the efficiency of Islamic banks in Malaysia and Indonesia using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is a non-parametric and deterministic methodology for determining the relative efficiency. The intermediation approach will be applied. This study identifies the sources and the level of inefficiency of the inputs and outputs. The results show that the Islamic banking in Indonesia is more efficient than the one in Malaysia in all three measurements; the technical, the scale, and the overall efficiency. Technically, financing is one of the sources of inefficiency in Malaysia, while human resource is one of the sources of inefficiency in Indonesia.Islamic windows should be encouraged to convert to subsidiaries or Islamic full branches to improve the scale and the overall efficiencies in Malaysia. Furthermore, the accelerated expansion both organically and inorganically is needed to improve the scale and the overall efficiencies of the Islamic banking in Indonesia.JEL Classification: C14, G21, G28Keywords: Islamic banking, performance, efficiency, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).

This paper examines the efficiency performance of the Islamic banks that consist of 14 countries namely Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, and Yemen during the period of 2004-2011 with 44 Islamic banks involved. The efficiency estimates of individual banks are evaluated using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. The empirical findings suggest that during the period of study, pure technical efficiency outweighs scale efficiency in the global Islamic banking sector implying that the Islamic banks have been managerially efficient in exploiting their resources to the fullest extent. The empirical findings seem to suggest that the global Islamic banks have exhibited high pure technical efficiency. During the period of study it is found that pure technical efficiency has greater influence in determining the total technical inefficiency of the Global Islamic banking sectors.

The Law No. 21 of 2008 about Islamic banking, requires every Islamic business unit to spin-off if they have met the criterion. There are two spin-off’s methods can be selected by Islamic banks. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of spin-off method to profitability. The profitability indicator that used in this study is the return on asset. This study is using panel regression with random effect model. The result showed that spin-off method doesn’t have a significant impact on the Return On Asset (ROA) Islamic Banks from spin-off effect. Only BOPO and Non-Performing Finance (NPF) had a significant effect on Return On Asset (ROA). These results indicate that the Islamic business units that want to do the spin-off can choose one of two methods of the spin-off. The decision depends on the internal condition of Islamic business unit and the internal policies of conventional commercial banks.
