Abstract The prediction of children's adult height is a common procedure in childhood endocrinology. Through the prediction of children's adult height, it is possible to find abnormalities in children's growth and development. Many jobs in today's society have certain requirements for height, so the accuracy of children adulthood height prediction is important for children. Current methods for predicting adult height of children have some shortcomings such as inaccurate accuracy. To deal with these problems, this paper analyzes the data collected by the Chinese children and adolescents' physical and growth health projects in primary and secondary schools in Zhejiang Province, and proposes a method for predicting adult height based on back propagation neural network (BPNN) with the body composition of children and adolescents as input. Since the BP algorithm has the risk of falling into local optimization, and we propose LSALO-BP model that incorporates the ant lion optimizer (LSALO) into the BP algorithm as location strategy to avoid local optimization. The improvements achieved by the ant lion algorithm are mainly reflected in: improving the ant's walk mode, and enhancing the global search ability of the LSALO algorithm. The comparison experiment of 10 benchmark functions proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the location strategy. The LSALO-BP model is applied to the prediction of adult height of children and adolescents. The experimental results show that compared with other models, the LSALO-BP prediction model has increased the prediction accuracy by 6.67%~16.08% for boys and 4.67%~6.6% for girls, which can more accurately predict the adult height of children and adolescents.

Background: For children with retarded bone ages such as in constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) there are no specific methods to predict adult height based on bone age. Widely used methods such as Bayley-Pinneau (BP) tend to overestimate adult height in CDGP. Objective: We aimed to develop a specific adult height prediction model for teenage boys with retarded bone ages >1 year. Methods: Based on the adult heights of 68 males (median age 22.5 years) a new height prediction model was calculated based on 105 height measurements and bone age determinations at a median age of 14.0 years. The new model was adapted for the degree of bone age retardation and validated in an independent cohort of 32 boys with CDGP. Results: The BP method overestimated adult height (median +1.2 cm; p = 0.282), especially in boys with a bone age retardation ≥2 years (median +1.6 cm; p = 0.027). In the validation study, there was no significant difference between adult height and predicted adult height based on the new model (p = 0.196), while the BP model led to a significant overestimation of predicted adult height (median +4.1 cm; p = 0.009). Conclusions: The new model to predict adult height in boys with CDGP provides novel indices for height predictions in bone ages >13 years and is adapted to different degrees of bone age retardation. The new prediction model has a good predictive capability and overcomes some of the shortcomings of the BP model.

AbstractThe aim of this systematic review was to identify and summarize evidence for the association between muscle strength (MS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and MS and combinations of risk factors for MetS in children and adolescents. Five databases (Medline/PubMed, EBSCO, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge) were searched up to November 2019 with complementary reference list searches. Inclusion criteria were studies that investigated the relationship between MS and MetS or MS and combinations of risk factors for MetS in children and adolescents (≤19 years of age). Risk of bias was assessed using standard procedures. From the total of 15,599 articles initially identified, 13 articles were included, representing 11,641 children and adolescents. Higher MS values were associated with lower risk for MetS or combinations of risk factors for MetS (n=11/13 studies). Of the total of included studies, about 23.1% (03/13) were longitudinal and all included studies were classified as having a moderate risk of bias. This review provides preliminary evidence for a beneficial relationship between MS and MetS among children and adolescents. Additionally, although the body of evidence points to the beneficial relationship between higher MS and lower risk for combination of factors for MetS in children and adolescents, this relationship is inconclusive.

Overweight and obesity, as well as underweight in children and adolescents, pose a significant public health issue. This study aimed to investigate the secular trend of the incidence of underweight, overweight, and obesity in children from Ukraine in 2013/2014 and 2018/2019. The studies were conducted in randomly selected primary and secondary schools in Ukraine. In total, 13,447 children (6468 boys and 6979 girls) participated in the study in 2013/2014 and 18,144 children (8717 boys and 9427 girls) participated in 2018/2019. Measurements of body weight and height were performed in triplicate. Underweight, overweight, and obesity were diagnosed according to the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). In the group of girls, a significant difference between 2013/2014 and 2018/2019 measurements was found only among 7-year-olds. The percentage of girls at this age exceeding the body mass index (BMI) norm was lower in the 2018/2019 study. In boys, a significant difference was also found in 7-year-olds, and, as in girls, a lower share of overweight and obesity was found in 2018/2019. But for the ages of 12, 13, and 15, the significant differences had a different character—more overweight or obese boys were found in the 2018/2019 study. The proportion of underweight children was similar for the majority of age groups in both genders and did not differ in a statistically significant way.

Differences in understanding emotion in autism are well-documented, although far more research has considered how being autistic impacts an understanding of other people’s emotions, compared to their own. In neurotypical adults and children, many emotions are associated with distinct bodily maps of experienced sensation, and the ability to report these maps is significantly related to the awareness of interoceptive signals. Here, in 100 children who either carry a clinical diagnosis of autism ( n = 45) or who have no history of autism ( n = 55), we investigated potential differences in differentiation across autistic children’s bodily maps of emotion, as well as how such differentiation relates to the processing of interoceptive signals. As such, we measured objective interoceptive performance using the heartbeat-counting task, and participants’ subjective experience of interoceptive signals using the child version of the Body Perception Questionnaire. We found less differentiation in the bodily maps of emotion in autistic children, but no association with either objective or subjective interoceptive processing. These findings suggest that, in addition to previously reported differences in detecting others’ emotional states, autistic children have a less differentiated bodily experience of emotion. This does not, however, relate to differences in interoceptive perception as measured here. Lay abstract More research has been conducted on how autistic people understand and interpret other people’s emotions, than on how autistic people experience their own emotions. The experience of emotion is important however, because it can relate to difficulties like anxiety and depression, which are common in autism. In neurotypical adults and children, different emotions have been associated with unique maps of activity patterns in the body. Whether these maps of emotion are comparable in autism is currently unknown. Here, we asked 100 children and adolescents, 45 of whom were autistic, to color in outlines of the body to indicate how they experienced seven emotions. Autistic adults and children sometimes report differences in how they experience their internal bodily states, termed interoception, and so we also investigated how this related to the bodily maps of emotion. In this study, the autistic children and adolescents had comparable interoception to the non-autistic children and adolescents, but there was less variability in their maps of emotion. In other words, they showed more similar patterns of activity across the different emotions. This was not related to interoception, however. This work suggests that there are differences in how autistic people experience emotion that are not explained by differences in interoception. In neurotypical people, less variability in emotional experiences is linked to anxiety and depression, and future work should seek to understand if this is a contributing factor to the increased prevalence of these difficulties in autism.

The proven relationship between the frequency of influenza and acute respiratory infections in children with vitamin D deficiency and the data on the relationship between a high mortality rate from SARS-CoV-2 in patients with low levels of vitamin D in the body under conditions of a forced sharp decrease in the level of insolation in the period from March 11, 2020 dictated the relevance assessing the vitamin D supply of children and adolescents in educational organizations of the city of Ulan-Ude. Purpose of the study: to assess the vitamin D supply of children and adolescents living in the city of Ulan-Ude. Methods: in a non-randomized, single-center, transverse (one-stage) uncontrolled comparative study, the concentration of 25(OH) vitamin D – 25(OH)D – in the blood serum of children and adolescents in Ulan-Ude was studied from May 22 to May 24, 2020. Moderate vitamin D deficiency (deficiency) was determined when the content of 25(OH)D was in the range of 20–30 ng/ml, the deficiency was within the limits, and the severe deficiency was <10 ng/ml. Results: assessment of vitamin D provision was carried out in 60 children aged 10 to 17 years (15 [11; 16] years), of which 19 boys, 41 girls. Children were divided into 2 groups depending on age: 10–11 years old (grade 5) (n=27) and 15–17 years old (grades 9–11) (n=33). Deficiency of vitamin D was found in 4 (15%), 11 (33%); deficit – in 19 (70%), 18 (55%); severe deficiency – in 2 (7%), 4 (12%), respectively. Along with low indicators of the provision of children and adolescents in the city of Ulan-Ude, an even lower provision of children and adolescents of Buryats was noted. The concentration of vitamin D in Buryat children and adolescents below normal (less than 30 ng/ml) was found in 35 (100%) children and adolescents, deficiency – in 8 (23%) children, vitamin D deficiency – in 21 (60%) children and severe deficiency – in 6 (17%). A statistically significant difference in the content of 25(OH)D between children and adolescents of Russian nationality and Buryats was revealed (p=0,0056). Evaluation of the diet showed that the frequency of consumption of fish as a source of vitamin D by children and adolescents is low. Conclusion: there is a high incidence of vitamin D deficiency and deficiency, which amounted to 97% in the examined children and adolescents living in the city of Ulan-Ude, more pronounced in Buryat children and adolescents, which requires organizational measures to replenish the vitamin D deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity in a representative sample of children and adolescents from a Brazilian region with low economic development. METHODS: A total of 982 girls and 986 boys, aged seven to 17 years old and assisted by Segundo Tempo Program, from Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were included in the study. Low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity were defined based on body mass cut-off indexes recommended by the International Obesity Task Force. The prevalence of the nutritional status according to sex and age was compared by chi-square test. RESULTS: In girls, the frequency of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity was 4.1, 18.4 and 3.8%, respectively; in boys, these percentages were 6.3, 13.2 and 2.9%, respectively. The low body weight/thinness for girls raised from 2.7% (7-10 years old) to 5.5% (15-17 years old); the body weight excess (overweight and obesity) decreased from 30.1 to 16.2% for the same age groups. In boys, the corresponding trends were from 3.2 to 9.4% for low body weight/thinness, and from 23.4 to 9.2%, for body weight excess. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that, even in a region with low economic status, the body weight excess was the main problem associated with nutritional health. The high overweight and obesity prevalence rates indicate the need of public policies for promoting healthy feeding behaviors and physical activity.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate agreement of the body adiposity index (BAI) and paediatric body adiposity index (BAIp) in estimating body fat compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and to propose cut-off points for these indices to classify excess adiposity in Brazilian children and adolescents.DesignCross-sectional study. Measures of weight, height, hip circumference, BMI and body fat percentage (%BF) assessed by DXA were taken, and BAI and BAIp were calculated. The Bland–Altman plot was used to estimate agreement between the methods, and the receiver-operating characteristic curve to determine the cut-off points for BAI and BAIp per age and sex in comparison with DXA.SettingViçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil.SubjectsChildren and adolescents aged 8–19 years (n 1049).ResultsOf the children and adolescents, 52·4 % were girls. BAI and BAIp had satisfactory performance by the receiver-operating characteristic curve, except for the 18–19 years age group, whose BAIp had better predictive capacity than BAI. The agreement analysis showed that BAI overestimated %BF by 2·64 %, on average, using DXA; while BAIp underestimated %BF by 3·37 %.ConclusionsBAI and BAIp showed low agreement with the body fat obtained by DXA, requiring caution when interpreting body composition data in children and adolescents.
