Abstract Background: To determine plasma ephrin-A1 and VEGF165 levels in a cohort of diabetic retinopathy patients. Methods: Plasma ephrin-A1 and VEGF165 levels in fifty-five subjects including 19 individuals without diabetes (non-DM), 16 patients with diabetes (DM) but without diabetic retinopathy, and 20 patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), were determined by ELISA. Serum creatinine, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c were also measured. One-way ANOVA , Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney U Test corrected by Bonferroni, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Spearman Correlation Coefficient Analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Ephrin-A1 expression could be detected in human plasma with an average of 1.52 ± 0.43 (mean ± SEM) ng/ml. In DR subjects, the plasma ephrin-A1concentration was 3.63 ± 4.63 ng/ml, which was significantly higher than that of the other two groups (non-DM: 0.27 ± 0.13 ng/ml, DM: 0.35 ± 0.34 ng/ml). The expression of VEGF165 in human plasma was 34.00 ± 42.55 pg/ml, with no statistical difference among the three groups. There was no correlation between ephrin-A1 and VEGF165 in human plasma, but there was a correlation between plasma ephrin-A1 and duration of diabetes. Conclusions: Plasma ephrin-A1 was highly expressed in patients with diabetic retinopathy, and there was no difference of plasma VEGF165 expression in patients with diabetic retinopathy compared to the other two groups, suggesting that changes of plasma ephrin-A1 may be a more sensitive biomarker than plasma VEGF165 in detecting diabetic retinopathy.

Fibulin-1, an extracellular matrix glycoprotein, is closely correlated with angiogenesis. The purpose of this investigation is to determine serum and vitreous fibulin-1 concentrations in diabetic retinopathy (DR). This cross-sectional investigation was carried out in a population of 154 diabetic patients (54 without DR, 42 with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and 58 with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)) and 49 control subjects. The diabetic group showed higher serum and vitreous fibulin-1 concentrations than the controls. Serum and vitreous fibulin-1 concentrations in PDR patients were significantly elevated compared with those in the other 3 groups. NPDR patients showed elevated levels of serum and vitreous fibulin-1 concentrations compared with patients without DR. Logistic regression analysis revealed that serum and vitreous fibulin-1 were risk factors for developing DR. Pearson correlation analysis showed that serum fibulin-1 was correlated with systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting plasma glucose and vitreous fibulin-1. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis showed that vitreous fibulin-1 was correlated with SBP, DBP, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum fibulin-1. Serum and vitreous fibulin-1 concentrations are elevated under DR condition.

Abstract Objectives To evaluate serum levels of zonulin and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients complicated by diabetic retinopathy and to investigate the effect of intestinal permeability on diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression. Materials and Methods Eighty-nine patients with T2DM and 30 healthy controls aged between 18 and 80 years were enrolled. T2DM patients were grouped as without DR (n=30), with non-proliferative DR (n=29), and with proliferative DR (n=30). Serum zonulin and IL-6 levels were measured with the ELISA method. Results Zonulin levels showed no statistical difference by pairwise comparisons of groups, but IL-6 levels were significantly increased in non-proliferative and proliferative DR groups compared to the HC and without DR groups. Zonulin level was correlated with body mass index and IL-6 level; IL-6 level was correlated with duration of diabetes, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. While duration of diabetes and serum IL-6 levels had an independent effect on DR development, zonulin had no effect. Conclusions Serum zonulin levels cannot be used as a biomarker for the progression of the diabetic retinopathy complication.

This study investigates multilevel differences in safety climate (SC) perception dimensions between management and laborers on Taiwanese construction sites. With Taiwan’s high rate of construction site safety incidents, implementing successful safety strategies requires understanding differences in SC perceptions between management and laborers. This study used a structured SC questionnaire with responses from 74 managers and 261 laborers. The analysis of collected data includes (1) descriptive statistics comparing the selected dimensions; (2) Pearson correlation analysis examining relationships between SC perception dimensions; (3) t-test and one-way ANOVA to assess relationships between the respondent’s background and SC perception dimensions; and (4) Post-Tukey comparison analysis to compare the SC perception differences between management and laborers. The results indicate that management-level staff show a higher degree of SC perception than laborer-level staff. This level of SC perception varies between individual dimensions. The strongest convergence between the two groups is observed in the dimension of ‘workmate care of each other’, and the greatest divergence is found in ‘risk decision making’. Previous studies regarding SC perception in Taiwan specifically focus on construction workers and neglect the differences in perception between management and laborers. The outcomes of this study contribute to the understanding of multilevel SC perceptions, which can be used in the development of targeted strategies to improve SC on construction sites.

This study aims to clarify whether tax knowledge of individual taxpayers motivates tax compliance in Malaysia. Studies with similar topics express the fact that there still exists a gap in profiling the demographic characteristics of knowledgeable taxpayers and better compliant taxpayers in Malaysia. Age, gender, income groups, and education level were the demographic variables used to study the association. The study applied a survey method for data collection. The population targeted was the individual taxpayers across Malaysia, whereby a sample of 419 respondents involved in this study. T-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis had been employed to analyse the data. The outcome of the study reveals that knowledgeable taxpayers are not better tax complaining of taxpayers in Malaysia. Further, the relationship between tax knowledge and tax compliance is negative and insignificant. This paper studied the association of tax knowledge with tax compliance level, which attempt to contribute to the literature and aids tax administration to intensify not only tax law educations but also tax penalties for tax evaders.

AbstractCorrelation analysis is a fundamental technique to determine potential relationships within biological processes. However, many biological processes have been shown to function in a periodic manner. When modeling correlations, the fluctuations that are associated with periodicity cause significant issues. We have implemented a Phase Shift Correlation (PSC) algorithm, with a corresponding value PSCrho, to address the periodicity and phase variance associated with features that vary with the same frequency -- but are phase shifted. The phase shift could well indicate causality with one feature’s quantitative change leading to the change in the other feature. We applied the PSC algorithm to Ulcerative Colitis (UC) microbiome data and compared the resulting feature relationships with the equivalent Spearman correlation function results. PSC located many instances of higher phase shifted correlations, where the corresponding Pearson correlation was low.

This research aims to investigate the frequencies of single-clause sentences (SS) and multi-clause sentences (MS) used by IELTS test-takers in writing task 2 and the relationship between their use of single-clause sentences and band score in this section. The researcher used the descriptive comparative research design and the quantitative method design with convenient sampling with fifty (50) sample essays mainly sourced from the set of Cambridge English IELTS Academic books. After collecting the data, the researchers analyzed the data using statistical and descriptive analysis. The result shows that the percentages of single-clause and multi-clause sentences in the range between 0 and 6.0 bands are relatively equal. On the other hand, these percentages in the range of 6.5-9.0 have a significant difference. Additionally, the results of Pearson Correlation Analysis show that the frequency of single-clause sentences has an insignificant negative relationship with the IELTS writing task 2 band score. Therefore, IELTS writing task 2 compositions with more single-clause sentences are potentially graded with a lower band score.

SummarySephadex gel filtration of human plasma gave results suggesting the presence of two proactivators of plasminogen, termed proactivators A and B.Activity resembling that of proactivator A was found in rabbit plasma, but not in guinea pig plasma.Plasminogen activators produced by the interaction of proactivator A of human plasma with streptokinase had no caseinolytic or TAMe esterolytic effect.Proactivator A can be separated in a form apparently free from plasminogen, as shown by the heated fibrin plate test and by immunological analysis. On the other hand, proactivator B concentrates prepared so far are contamined with plasminogen.Human proactivators appear to be far more susceptible to streptokinase than are rabbit proactivators.Inhibitors of the fibrinolysin system were observed in the plasmas of all 3 species. These inhibitors are not present in the euglobulin fraction of plasma. Sephadex fractionation of euglobulin fractions results in proactivator preparations that do not contain inhibitors.
