Abstract In the last decade, the interest in software-defined ultra-wideband (UWB) and tunable radio frequency (RF) apparatuses with low size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP), has grown dramatically, pushed by the new 6G vision where, RF equipment shall enable a large number of fundamental applications as UWB communications, robot localization mapping and control and high precision radars, all of them contributing in revolutionizing our life style. Unfortunately, the coexistence of ultra-wideband and software-defined operation, tunability and low SWaP represents a big issue in the current RF technologies. In this article, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of a complete tunable software-defined RF transmitter with low footprint (i.e. on photonic chip) is presented exceeding the state-of-the-art for the extremely large tunability range of 0.5-50 GHz without any parallelization of narrower-band components and with fast tuning (<200micros). This first implementation, represents a breakthrough in microwave photonics.

The research and use of positioning and navigation technologies outdoors has seen a steady and exponential growth. Based on this success, there have been attempts to implement these technologies indoors, leading to numerous studies. Most of the algorithms, techniques and technologies used have been implemented outdoors. However, how they fare indoors is different altogether. Thus, several technologies have been proposed and implemented to improve positioning and navigation indoors. Among them are Infrared (IR), Ultrasound, Audible Sound, Magnetic, Optical and Vision, Radio Frequency (RF), Visible Light, Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR)/Inertial Navigation System (INS) and Hybrid. The RF technologies include Bluetooth, Ultra-wideband (UWB), Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and Near Field Communication (NFC). In addition, positioning techniques applied in indoor positioning systems include the signal properties and positioning algorithms. The prevalent signal properties are Angle of Arrival (AOA), Time of Arrival (TOA), Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), while the positioning algorithms are Triangulation, Trilateration, Proximity and Scene Analysis/ Fingerprinting. This paper presents a state-of-the-art survey of indoor positioning and navigation systems and technologies, and their use in various scenarios. It analyses distinct positioning technology metrics such as accuracy, complexity, cost, privacy, scalability and usability. This paper has profound implications for future studies of positioning and navigation.

In order to resolve automatic measurement, automatic monitoring and control of heat energy, a new type IC Card heat energy meter with automatic monitoring and control is designed. Software and hardware design of the heat instrument is introduced. Solutions of these problems are proposed throng analysis of engineering design problems. Lower power consumption and high precision requirements of heat measurement are met by collecting lower consumption components and intelligence design manners. Automatic measurement, monitoring and control functions are realized through gathering heat parameters of end-users on time, and analysis, comparing on the gathered data and data from standard meter by microcomputer. Preliminary tests show that the heat energy meter has functions of high precision, lower power consumption, strong intelligence and can achieve automatic Measurement, automatic monitoring and automatic control.

Reducing the energy consumption of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems while ensuring users’ comfort is of both academic and practical significance. However, the-state-of-the-art of the optimization model of the HVAC system is that either the thermal dynamic model is simplified as a linear model, or the optimization model of the HVAC system is single-timescale, which leads to heavy computation burden. To balance the practicality and the overhead of computation, in this paper, a multi-timescale bilinear model of HVAC systems is proposed. To guarantee the consistency of models in different timescales, the fast timescale model is built first with a bilinear form, and then the slow timescale model is induced from the fast one, specifically, with a bilinear-like form. After a simplified replacement made for the bilinear-like part, this problem can be solved by a convexification method. Extensive numerical experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of this model.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used in many challenging and diversified applications. These applications belong to the civilian and the military fields. To name a few; infrastructure inspection, traffic patrolling, remote sensing, mapping, surveillance, rescuing humans and animals, environment monitoring, and Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations. However, the use of UAVs in these applications needs a substantial level of autonomy. In other words, UAVs should have the ability to accomplish planned missions in unexpected situations without requiring human intervention. To ensure this level of autonomy, many artificial intelligence algorithms were designed. These algorithms targeted the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of UAVs. In this paper, we described the state of the art of one subset of these algorithms: the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques. We made a detailed description of them, and we deduced the current limitations in this area. We noted that most of these DRL methods were designed to ensure stable and smooth UAV navigation by training computer-simulated environments. We realized that further research efforts are needed to address the challenges that restrain their deployment in real-life scenarios.

The home network is one of the emerging areas from the last century. However, the growth of the home network market is stationary at present. This paper describes the limitations of the home network system and the requirements for overcoming the current limitations. Also described is a new home network service system known as COWS and its easy installation and scalable operation. COWS consists of power consumption monitor and control devices along with a service server that is a complementary combination of Open Service Gateway initiative (OSGi) and web services. A home network system has a dynamic, heterogeneous, distributed, and scalable topology. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has been proposed as a solution that satisfies the requirement of a home network, and OSGi and web services are two successful SOA-based frameworks. An included service server has a flexible architecture that consists of a core and extendable service packages. A power consumption monitor and control function provides useful context information for activity-based context-aware services and optimizes the power consumption. The system can be installed easily into existing and new houses to solve the current barrier of the popularization of home network services.

This paper presents an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the design of tendon-driven manipulators. A special characteristic associated with tendon-driven manipulators is that tendons can only exert tension but not compression. Based on this unique characteristic, the fundamental mechanics associated with the design of tendon-driven manipulators are reviewed. The review includes structure classification, kinematics, statics, dynamics and control.

For the precision rotor position control of stream selector, a control system based on direct current motor (DC motor) has been constructed. The DC motor, with a high-precision incremental encoder used as the driving force, was assembled with the stream selector rotor through a shaft coupling. Following the motor rotation, the encoder generated two-channel quadrature pulses and one channel index pulses. An ultralow-power consumption microcontroller (msp430f2232) received theses pulses and calculated them. The position of the slot was determined by the number of pulses counted from the index pulse. Operator can set and monitored the slot positions of five stream selectors simultaneously through the program which was written with LabVIEW on the host computer. This module featured high reliability and low power consumption compared with the one driven by step motor. Beyond that, it was much smaller and lighter.
