Limpets are molluscs widely used in food diet and much appreciated in many regions. The consumption of fishery products rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids has been increasing through filleted products and restructured products. Since food oxidation is the major cause of nutritional quality deterioration in fish products, the interest in the replacement of synthetic antioxidants with natural sources, namely in the preparation of restructured animal products such as burgers, sausages and pâtés, has been increasing. Phenolic compounds from fruits and vegetables have recognised antioxidant properties and are therefore currently considered as good alternatives to synthetic antioxidants in the food industry. In this study, the effects of the extracts of Arbutus unedo fruits, at two concentration levels (3% and 6%), on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, oxidative stability and safety of limpets pâté, during 90 days at refrigerated storage, were investigated. After processing, the addition of 3% and 6% of A. unedo extracts into limpets pâté contributed to an increase of 18% and 36% in the total phenolic content and 5% and 36% in the antioxidant capacity, respectively. During storage, the enriched limpets pâté with A. unedo fruit extracts at 6% was more efficient as an enhancer of oxidative stability, with 34% inhibition of lipid oxidation, highlighting the potential use of A. unedo fruits as a functional ingredient in the fish industry. Overall, the limpets pâté with 6% of A. unedo fruit extracts proved to be more efficient regarding microbial control, and had the lowest changes in the quality parameters such as in colour, texture and pH during 90 days at refrigerated storage.

Abstract Objective This study was aimed at evaluating the toxicity and the antioxidant property of Cassia fistula stem bark extracts in zebrafish. Materials and Methods Crude aqueous and ethanol extracts of C. fistula stem bark were obtained following a standard solvent-based extraction method. The toxicity of these extracts on zebrafish embryonic development was determined and the LC50 values were calculated. Finally, the antioxidant property of C. fistula stem bark extracts was determined in arsenic-induced oxidative stress models of zebrafish. Results The aqueous extract of C. fistula stem bark showed a slightly larger LC50 value (213.6 ppm) compared with the ethanol extract (LC50 = 63.5 ppm), suggesting a lower toxicity of the aqueous extract. A significant reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) signal was observed in arsenic-exposed embryos treated with the aqueous extract, but not the ethanol extract, indicating that the antioxidant activity is present only in the aqueous extract of C. fistula stem bark. Conclusion Identification of antioxidants from natural sources is desirable because of increasing safety concerns associated with synthetic antioxidants. This study demonstrated that aqueous extract from C. fistula stem bark possesses antioxidant properties, which can be further characterized for mechanism of action and potential applications.

Flaxseed oil cake (FOC) was evaluated as a potential substrate for the production of a novel kefir-like fermented beverage. Three variants containing 5%, 10%, and 15% (w/w) of FOC were inoculated with kefir grains and incubated at 25 °C for 24 h. After processing, beverages were stored in refrigerated conditions (6 °C) for 21 days. Changes in microbial population, pH, acidity, levels of proteins, polyphenolics, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, and reducing sugars were estimated. Additionally, viscosity, firmness, color, and antioxidant properties were determined. Results showed that lactic acid bacteria as well as yeast were capable of growing well in the FOC without any supplementation. During refrigerated storage, the viability of the microorganisms were over the recommended minimum level for kefir products. As a result of fermentation, the beverages showed excellent antioxidant activity. Because of the functional characteristics conferred to the FOC beverages, the use of kefir grains showed adequate potential for the industrial application. Therefore, this beverages could be used as a new, non-dairy vehicle for beneficial microflora consumption, especially by vegans and lactose-intolerant consumers.

Background: Research on medicinal plant antioxidants has emerged as a potential therapeutic to prevent free radical generated damage in the human body. Hammada elegans Botsch (popularly known as “Ajram”) is a xerophytic plant widely found in Laghouat region, but there are only a few reports about the biological or chemical properties of these species. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant and the antihemolytic activities of hexanic, acetonic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Algerian Hammada elegans Botsch by employing different in vitro assay systems. Methods: The total phenolic content, the flavonoid content and the condensed tannin amount were analyzed using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride and vanillin assays, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by CUPRAC, iron chelating, ABTS•+and antihemolytic assays, and was expressed as EC50 values. Results: Among the analyzed extracts, the aqueous extract had the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents. Also, this extract displayed the highest antioxidant capacities compared to the other extracts and standards. Its EC50 value for ABTS radical-scavenging activity was 0.265 ± 0.003 mg/L. Moreover, this extract showed high iron (II) chelating ability (EC50 = 0.958 ± 0.001 mg/L), and good antioxidant activity in the cupric ion reducing activity (CUPRAC) in a concentration dependent manner (EC50 were 0.709 ± 0.002 mg/L). Additionally, this extract had the best antihemolytic activity against AAPH-induced hemolysis (EC50=0.090 ± 0.004 mg/L). Conclusion: Our study revealed that the aqueous extract of Hammada elegans Botsch, is a potential source of antioxidants which possess a high protective effect of membrane against free radical.

Aim: This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and in vitro antioxidant properties of methanol and aqueous leaf extracts of Geophila obvallata using standard methods. Materials and Methods: The in vitro antioxidant assays carried out were 1, 1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, Nitric oxide (NO•) radical scavenging activity assay, 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS•+) radical cation scavenging assay, ferric reducing properties and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, saponins, terpernoids and cardiac glycosides in both extracts. Relative to the aqueous extract, the methanol extract contained a higher amount of the secondary metabolites. However, both extracts exhibited appreciable and dose-dependent capacities for quenching DPPH, ABTS•+ and NO• free radicals, and potent ferric reducing ability to levels comparable to those of ascorbic acid. The crude methanol extract showed significantly increased (P<0.05) antioxidant activity than the aqueous extract. Conclusion: It was concluded that the extract possesses strong antioxidant properties due to its content of phytochemicals, and provides scientific basis for its ethno medicinal applications.

IntroductionThe present study investigated the anti-acute myeloid leukemia effects of Ziziphora clinopodides Lam leaf aqueous extract conjugated cadmium nanoparticles.Material and methodsTo synthesize CdNPs, Z. clinopodides aqueous extract was mixed with Cd(NO3)2 .4H2O. The characterization of the biosynthesized cadmium nanoparticles was carried out using many various techniques such as UV-Vis. and FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, FE-SEM, and EDS.ResultsThe uniform spherical morphology of NPs was proved by FE-SEM images with NPs the average size of 26.78cnm. For investigating the antioxidant properties of Cd(NO3)2, Z. clinopodides, CdNPs, and Daunorubicin, the DPPH test was used. The cadmium nanoparticles inhibited half of the DPPH molecules in a concentration of 196 µg/mL. To survey the cytotoxicity and anti-acute myeloid leukemia effects of Cd(NO3)2, Z. clinopodides, CdNPs, and Daunorubicin, MTT assay was used on the human acute myeloid leukemia cell lines i.e., Murine C1498, 32D-FLT3-ITD, and Human HL-60/vcr. The IC50 of the cadmium nanoparticles was 168, 205, and 210 µg/mL against Murine C1498, 32D-FLT3-ITD, and Human HL-60/vcr cell lines, respectively. In the part of in vivo study, DMBA was used for inducing acute myeloid leukemia in mice. CdNPs similar to daunorubicin ameliorated significantly (p≤0.01) the biochemical, inflammatory, RBC, WBC, platelet, stereological, histopathological, and cellular-molecular parameters compared to the other groups.ConclusionsAs mentioned, the cadmium nanoparticles had significant anti-acute myeloid leukemia effects. After approving the above results in the clinical trial studies, these cadmium nanoparticles can be used as a chemotherapeutic drug to treat acute myeloid leukemia in humans.

Background: Chronic alcohol intake is related to hypertension. In the present work, we investigated the effect of Allablanckia floribunda Oliver (Clusiaceae) aqueous extract in alcohol-induced hypertensive rats and on related oxidative stress damages. Methods: Alcohol-induced hypertensive rats (AHR) was obtained by oral administration of ethanol (3 g/kg/day during 8 weeks). Blood pressure and heart rate were evaluated using the direct cannulation method. The effects of the extract on lipid profile as well as kidney and liver functions were studied. Free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties of the extract were evaluated by colorimetric method. The effects of A. floribunda were evaluated after 4 weeks of treatment with alcohol. Results: At the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, A. floribunda significantly decreased the mean blood pressure of AHR by 14.06 and 23.25 % respectively. Administration of the plant extract lead to the reduction of total cholesterol by 41.50% and 43.06%, HDL-cholesterol by 22.16 and 30.15% and artherogenic index by 69.78 and 74.43%, respectively at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg, as compared to untreated hypertensive rats. A. floribunda (200 and 400 mg/kg) decrease bilirubine (12.98 and 16.88%), urea (23.32% and 32.26 %), ALT (10.73 and 27.97%) and AST (29.80 and 42.22%) of treated AHR, respectively. The plant extract also reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase and increased the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration in aorta, heart, kidney and liver of AHR. Conclusion: These results suggest that the aqueous extract of A. floribunda possesses antioxidant and hypotensive activity in alcohol-induced hypertension

Abstract Background: The chicken egg is one of the nature’s flawlessly preserved biological products, recognized as an excellent source of nutrients for humans. Selenium (Se) is an essential micro-element that plays a key role in biological processes. Organic Se sources have shown many advantages over inorganic Se in poultry and can be produced biologically by microbial reduction of Se. Therefore, the possibility of integrating Se enriched bacteria as a supplement in poultry feed can provide an interesting source of organic Se, thereby increase egg Se concentration, improve oxidative stability and offer health-related advantages to humans. The objective of this study was to examine the effects inorganic and different organic Se sources on egg yolk colour, antioxidant profile, oxidative stability, and storage effect in relation to the treatments for fresh and stored egg yolk at 4±2 0C for 14 days. Results: The results reveals that dietary Se supplementation, especially the organic (ADS18 > Se-Yeast) sources influence (p < 0.05) egg yolk colour. Dietary inorganic Se and organic Se were noted to significantly improves egg yolk and breast meat antioxidants profile (total carotenoid and phenol content). There was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in total cholesterol in fresh, stored egg yolk and breast muscle of Se treated groups compared with control. Whereas for breast muscle, only hens with organic Se supplementation (ADS18 > Se-Yeast) showed lower (p < 0.05) cholesterol compared to inorganic and control hens. The oxidative stability parameters of the eggs, breast and thigh muscle, and plasma showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in primary oxidation products (MDA) concentrations with hens supplemented with ADS18. However, the MDA content increased (p < 0.05) with an advanced storage period in egg yolk. It should be noted that, compared to inorganic Se and basal diets, egg yolk from hens fed with organic Se remain fresh for 2 weeks.Conclusions: Dietary Se organic supplementation (ADS18 > Se-Yeast) improves egg yolk colour, antioxidant profile, and oxidative status of egg yolk and tissue. For egg enrichment and antioxidant properties, the source of supplemented organic Se is essential. Thus, ‘’functional eggs’’ enriched with organic selenium becomes possible to produced.
