This paper studies the development of economic ties between professional sports and media in the past ten years by the example of the Olympic Games media coverage. The main purpose of the research is to identify the regularities that are formed in the communicative environment of elite sports. The paper is focused on the Olympic Games as the global sports events that include several types of sports competitions. The subject of the study is the sport as a product. The object of the study is the sport entertainment products in the media sphere. The relevance of the research is that the interconnections between sports and media expand and change rapidly and are influenced not only by the development of new technologies but also by a coronavirus situation. The systematization of literary sources on the selected matter indicated the need for further studies to reflect the rampant evolution of sports media and the lack of unified terminology for viewing professional sports through the prism of mass media as a media product. The methodology of the research is based on the analysis of open-source statistical data and a set of empirical materials (official websites of sports organizations, TV channels, and social media pages). The author viewed these materials from four perspectives: the audience, the marketing approach, the sports themselves as a source of information, the mainstream and the new media. The results allowed identifying the main trends of the information space formation around the object under study. These trends prove that the structure of the «Elite Sports» media product is becoming more complex, and the number of communicative links and broadcasting opportunities of sports events has increased. Finally, the author proposed a conceptual model of representing professional sports as a media product on the example of the major sports events, through defining its communication links. The findings of the research could be useful for setting vectors for studying mainstream and new media in the chosen area. Culture – Society – Education no 2(16) 2019, Poznań 2019, pp. 203–224, Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300–0422. DOI 10.14746/kse.2019.16.13. This study concerns the online sports media coverage, a topic that has not been previously analyzed in Poland. In recent decades many studies (in Anglo–Saxon countries in particular) indicated the major underrepresentation of women’s sport and different framing of sportswomen andsportsmen. Those studies showed that the media plays important role in upholding gender stereotypes in sport and hindering empowerment of sportswomen. This study analyzes media coverage of three sports disciplines (gymnastics,swimming and weightlifting) during Rio Olympics on five websites. Findings revealed underrepresentation of women’s sport and setting the trend to write about women’s sport in disciplines consider as appropriated for women. The qualitative analysis did not indicate gender–specific descriptors in materials about sportspeople.

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the book, which is written in three parts. Part I focuses on how digital technology is changing sport experiences from a wide range of perspectives, while also providing some of the philosophical underpinning to the book. It examines how the logic of gaming provides a unifying theory for digital culture, sport, and the Olympic Games. Part II draws together these analyses and focuses on the broad ways in which digital technologies have affected elite and amateur sports experiences, along with considering how they have re-constituted the spectator’s proximity to the action. Part III focuses on the Olympic Games, as an exemplar of digital media innovation in sports. It documents the rise of citizen journalism and alternative news production practices that occur around sports events, notably the Olympic Games from Sydney 2000 to Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Abstract. Background: Several studies found a significant relationship between important sport events and suicidal behavior. Aims: We set out to investigate whether there is a significant relationship between the raw suicide rate and the most important international sports events (Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship) in such an achievement-oriented society as the Hungarian one, where these sport events receive great attention. Method: We examined suicide cases occurring over 15,706 days between January 1, 1970, and December 31, 2012 (43 years), separately for each gender. Because of the age-specific characteristics of suicide, the effects of these sport events were analyzed for the middle-aged (30–59 years old) and the elderly (over 60 years old) generations as well as for gender-specific population groups. The role of international sport events was examined with the help of time-series intervention analysis after cyclical and seasonal components were removed. Intervention analysis was based on the ARIMA model. Results: Our results showed that only the Olympic Games had a significant effect in the middle-aged population. Neither in the older male nor in any of the female age groups was a relationship between suicide and Olympic Games detected. Conclusion: The Olympic Games seem to decrease the rate of suicide among middle-aged men, slightly but significantly.

In the last decades, sports journalism has become one of the most rapidly growing parts of the media world. The reason is simple — right now sport holds the unique position in contemporary society. Governments, transnational companies, businesses — all are interested in promoting sports events. With this, coverage of tournaments and games has reached the global level. One of the main drivers of this hype is the mutual interest in hundreds of dozens of sports events that is shared all over the world. And the second driver is vast technical possibilities for transmitting information in all forms. Nowadays, new channels of mass communication are taking away significant part of the audience from the traditional sports broadcasting leader — television. News programs that once were a main source of the relevant sports information now are giving way to internet portals and digital media feeds. In this paper we thoroughly explore factors that have led to such drastic changes. Firstly, compared with the new media sources of information (e.g. Internet media) the core flaws of the television news are the following: loss of efficiency, delayed timing, an abundance of themes, format limits, expensive newsroom, high competition, almost zero feedback. Yet, experts in the sports news departments are relentlessly seeking for a new way to represent information. What sports news can give to the audience? It may be some unique content, original insights, “story behind story”, deep analysis, and, of course, high professional qualities of the sports news team.

Analysis of Ukrainian athletes’ results at the XXXII Olympiad Games allows pointing out the factors of the weak performance of Ukrainian athletes in women's individual saber and epee competitions, as well as men's team epee competitions, despite the possibility of winning medals in these sports events according to many analysts including those of Infostrada Sports and other sports statistics experts. These, in our opinion, include an unsatisfactory level of efficiency of the process of reaching the peak of readiness for the Olympic Games; lack of psychological stability of athletes at the competitions; weak tactical preparation of some athletes. Based on the performances of athletes of the Ukrainian fencing team in Tokyo, a conclusion was made about the unsatisfactory level of athletes’ preparation for the XXXII Olympic Games. Only 20% of the national team members were able to realize their potential at the XXXII Olympic Games. The dynamics of the athletes’ results at the World Championships 2017 – 2019 indicates the need to use in the new Olympic cycle the planning, which is focused on our athletes reaching the peak of readiness for the Olympics: at first, the training should be aimed at the maximum stimulation of the growth of sportsmanship, whereas at the final stage it should be focused on its realization in the major competitions. It is shown that despite the unsuccessful performance of the Ukrainian fencing team in the Olympic Tokyo, this type of martial arts has significant potential for improving sports achievements at the XXXIII Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. It is noted that in the new Olympic cycle it is of crucial importance to identify candidates for the XXXIII Olympic Games as soon as possible and to create all the conditions for their full-fledged preparation. Thus, to ensure further winning medal places at the Olympic Games, it is necessary to improve the system of sports training in the Olympic cycle, which envisages participation in numerous competitions during the year to achieve a high level of readiness in the major competitions of triennial – the Olympic Games.

Abstract The aim of the article is to highlight the key elements related to the implementation of new technologies in education from the perspective of the opinions and experiences of educators in the field in Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Finland, Poland, Turkey, and Uruguay. The text compares issues related to attitudes towards the use of new media in education, experiences with different forms of e-learning, and the level of restrictions on the use of smartphones in school. These variables are juxtaposed with the self-assessment of digital competence and how cyberspace is used. The survey was conducted using a standardised survey questionnaire translated into the relevant national languages in the first half of 2019, and involved a sample of 873 teachers representing eight countries. On the basis of the pilot studies it was noted that: 1) Teachers from LAC and EU like to use digital media - this is a constant trend independent of geographical location; 2) Teachers note that new technologies are not always better than analogue didactic aids; 3) Teachers from selected countries (the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Turkey, and Uruguay) have much greater techno-optimism in themselves than teachers from Bolivia, Poland, Finland and Turkey in terms of the impact of ICT on student motivation and engagement; 4) In all countries teachers prefer free online courses (the different forms of e-learning are used most often by those in the Dominican Republic, and the least often in Bolivia and Poland); 5) In each country teachers who highly value their own digital competences and have a positive attitude towards new media use ICT much more actively; 6) There is also a global trend in that the extensive use of cyberspace (typical e-services) appears in combination with the extensive use of various forms of e-learning; 7) Teachers from Ecuador are most likely to want to ban the use of smartphones in schools. The most liberal approach in this respect is taken by the Uruguayans; 8) The knowledge of the conditions related to restricting the use of smartphones goes beyond the analyses related to the style of use and attitude towards new media. This article is the result of pilot studies conducted within the framework of the SMART ECOSYSTEM FOR LEARNING AND INCLUSION project carried out in selected Latin American, Caribbean (LAC) and European (EU) countries.

During the last Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Polish female representatives won sig-nificantly more medals compared to men. This fact made the authors examine whether female athletes received proportionate media coverage compared to men. In the course ofresearch, articles from the two largest Polish dailies were analysed (“Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Fakt Gazeta Codzienna”). With the use of content analysis, 197 articles were analysed in order to check whether any quantitative and qualitative differences can be observed in describing women's and men's sport. The results show underrepresentation of press coverage regarding women's sport. The results of qualitative analysis also point to a number of differences when portraying women's and men's sport.

Sport training process has its own problems related to different sport disciplines, thus, it is essential effectively to employ sport scientists’ and coaches’ initiatives as well as their researches and gained experience. The most important sport science function is to accept and share new technologies and good practices through sport training theory and didactics alongside to the new challenges for high performance sport that settle new requirements for coaches’ competency. Such tendencies are already reflected in present scientific studies and training modes of high performance athletes. Coaching more and more appears to come as many-angled process for athletes, who strive for elite level and must be prepared to stay at this level for many years ahead; and this involves not only coach’s specific, profession-related, and general competencies but also other parties-scientists, medics, managers-alongside to national support. When planning athletes’ training process for the Olympic Games, it is necessary to take into consideration the tendencies of sport and event perspectives as well as tendencies to anticipate results. The data of athlete’s main characteristics analysis, changes in sport training methods and its strategy, the development of increasing training loads, material facilities and technical equipment must be considered too. After analysing this, the training and participation in competitions of athletes and other participants has to be acquainted and summarized; then coach’s insights that are prognostic for sport results can be welcomed. Eventually, qualitative criteria for training evaluation must be settled, considering its scientific relevance, originality, influence to new scientific researches as well as scientists’ public behaviour, tolerance, and proper area-related growth stimulation.

The present article examines the question of organization of official fan zones in Kyiv and other cities of the world during the Olympic Games, World Cup, UEFA European Championship, and other sports events, their location indoors and in open areas. The paper identifies specific features and sets of elements for formation of fan zones, examines scholarly works on the issue of organization of fan zones in the urban environment, describes the methodology of the scientific research, presents pilot projects of design of fan zones for watching sports contests in the course training design.
