Many social media users rely on photo editing techniques in order to receive more positive attention (i.e., likes/comments) online. This study used a mixed methods approach to conduct a descriptive analysis of #nofilter use by Instagram users. By using #nofilter users are making a point that they did not edit/manipulate their images. Of particular interest were those who used #nofilter but did filter their images. A text analysis of 18,366 images was conducted using Netlytic, reveling the largest content category as ‘appearance'. A content analysis was used to examine authors of #nofilter images whom did use a filter, and photo-coding scheme for this group of images was implemented. Of 18,366 images collected that used #nofilter, 12% (N=1630) did in fact use a filter. Listwise deletions were conducted and 1344 images remained. Results suggest the majority of accounts were personal, and belonged to females and of the images, majority had people in them. People using #nofilter do in fact filter their images and research into the reasons for deceit on social media is needed.

Using what social media has to offer: pre-teens’ online self-presentation practices The current study explores pre-teens’ self-presentation on social media and investigates to what extent they capitalize on social media’s opportunities to reflect on, visually alter, and receive feedback on their self-presentations. We conducted an online school-based study among 600 8-12-year olds in the Netherlands. The majority (55%) of pre-teens had a social media account and this percentage increased with age. Most pre-teens with a social media account shared messages and pictures, thought carefully about what (not) to post, and received (positive) feedback. Photo editing was less popular, but more common among girls. Receiving negative feedback was also uncommon, but more frequent among boys and younger pre-teens. Younger pre-teens were also less likely to reflect before posting. Pre-teens thus practice self-presentation on social media and become more skilled at this with age. Social media may help pre-teens develop impression management skills, which are central to pre-teen development.

Abstract This article applies Paul Tillich's existentialist analysis of the human predicament, particularly what it means to exist and to be fallen, to social media. I argue that social media heightens feelings of alienation and estrangement, supporting this claim with evidence from empirical research in psychiatry and communication studies. Thus, I offer an application of a Tillichian approach to an area of culture previously unexamined in this way. I identify three primary ways in which social media exacerbates existentialist emotional states: (1) social media allows us to construct artificial versions of ourselves through the use of filters and photo editing software; (2) it provides the means to quantify social approval in groups the size of which the human brain has not evolved for; (3) it extends the size of our social networks but decreases the quality of interactions. Social media is yet to receive significant philosophical or theological engagement despite its prevalence, particularly within younger generations. I argue that this is a mistake – philosophy has a duty to engage with such a ubiquitous feature of modern life.

Graphic Design is currently one of the few software that has been widely used for the development of knowledge because it is very easy to use in various aspects of work. Jobs by utilizing graphic design have a very large opportunity to be used by students with the current pandemic conditions, because apart from being easy to use in basic work for students, many social media users such as Instagram and Facebook want good Instagram and Facebook feeds. For this reason, it is inevitable that many social media users need photo editing services such as graduation photo editing and travel photo editing so that it can be used as a business opportunity among students to take the job because the work can be done anywhere with easily accessible tools. In today's world of work, if human resources (HR) do not have additional abilities or skills, it will be difficult to compete in obtaining work. Through this introduction, students are also expected to get to know the tools that exist in Photoshop software. With the introduction of Photoshop, it is hoped that it can provide new insights and knowledge to the students of Budi Agung Medan Private High School about making graphic design as a business opportunity.

Abstract Background The utilization of the smartphone and social media have introduced paradigm shifts to cosmetic surgery. Much has been studied regarding social media and its influences in plastic surgery; however, little is known about facial editing applications and how these relate to plastic surgery practices. Objectives The authors sought to discover if face-editing applications influence patients’ pursuit of plastic surgery, who utilizes these applications, and why. Methods An anonymous survey was administered between September and December 2019, including questions about demographics, familiarity, and utilization of face-editing applications, motivations in utilization and influences towards pursuing cosmetic procedures, and attitudes towards applications. Results Seventy patients completed the survey and 32.9% admitted to utilizing face-editing applications. Patients utilizing applications were significantly younger (36.9 years) than those who did not (54 years [P < 0.001]). Among those familiar with applications, women were significantly more likely than men to utilize them (100% vs 78.6%, respectively [P = 0.047]). Social media was the most common influence for utilizing apps (87%). The majority confirmed that these applications played a role in pursuing cosmetic procedures (56.5%). Most patients did not regret their utilization of these applications (87%). Conclusions Face-editing applications serve a role regarding patient decision-making to pursue cosmetic surgery. Several motivators exist for application utilization, the largest of which is social media. Younger females are the most likely demographic to utilize applications and generally do not express regret in doing so. Plastic surgeons would benefit by understanding patient motivations and expectations created by utilizing these applications.
