The world is currently battling the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that has been declared as a global pandemic since mid-March 2020. The pandemic has inevitably impacted social and economic activities of the nation, including those in the education sector. As the governments have mandated universities to close their campuses, learning activities has been forced to move online. In this difficult situation, many university administrators, lecturers, as well as students may find it difficult to adapt to the so-called “new normal” ways of learning.   Hence, as this is an unprecedented situation, this study explores the challenges faced by universities as academic institutions, lecturers, and students. This study starts by conducting a literature review concerning the challenges in e-learning in context of a pandemic. Data collected are then analyzed qualitatively using inductive thematic analysis technique, resulting in a taxonomy of e-learning challenges during a pandemic. Our analysis shows that students are challenged by connectivity, e-learning system support, and technological and self-regulation issues. On the other hand, lecturers are being challenged by competency, operational, self-regulation, and isolation issues. Meanwhile, institutions identify financial support and change management as challenging issues. This study highlights the need for further investigation to address the aforementioned challenges in e-learning.

While universities have been trying to focus their resources and attention on improving e-learning, many universities seem to be lagging behind students' increasing demands and expectations. In order to sustainably grow in an increasingly competitive e-learning environment, it is clear that universities must provide e-learning students with high quality services. To do this, universities are required to understand the attributes that e-learning students use to evaluate service quality. Unfortunately, little research on e-learning service quality has been conducted. This study developed and validated an instrument to measure student perceived e-learning service quality. Based on the relevant literature review and using responses from 1,232 e-learning students, the authors validated a three-factor e-learning service quality instrument involving e-learning system quality, e-learning instructor and course materials quality, and e-learning administrative and support service quality. Among these three factors, e-learning system quality makes the highest contribution to overall e-learning service quality, followed by e-learning instructor and course materials quality, and e-learning administrative and support service quality. This scale provides a useful measurement for researchers who wish to measure e-learning service quality and for university administrators and managers who want to enhance universities' e-learning servie quality.

Aim/Purpose: This study focuses on the learners’ success toward learning management systems in higher education in Morocco and also proposes a theoretical model to better understand the determinants of learners’ satisfaction, self-regulation and continuance intention to use these systems. For this purpose, variables which may have a positive or negative influence in our model are examined. Background: The latest version of the technology acceptance model, expectation–confirmation model, DeLone and McLean Information systems success model and self-regulated learning theory, have been used. This study proposes a causal model named e-learner success assessment model or e-LSAM. Methodology: In this study, a structural equation model (SEM) approach was used for the empirical validation and testing of correlation hypotheses between e-LSAM constructions. Contribution: This research extends previous literature on the factors that can contribute to learners’ use, engagement, satisfaction and success in an e-learning system, we also propose a causal model named e-learner success assessment model (e-LSAM). Findings: The results indicate that, learner’s success in an e-learning system could be explained by self-regulation and learners’ intention to continue using LMS, which is explained by learners’ satisfaction. The results also show that the system quality, course and information quality, course flexibility, diversity in assessments and social interactions can improve learners’ satisfaction with LMS platforms Impact on Society: This study will enable the university and higher school in Morocco to better understand the critical factors to be undertaken to improve student performance and educational levels. Future Research: This document is a general overview of factors that help to understand learner’s success in an eLearning system; it is not without limitations. Our research did not take into account the effects of demographic attributes such as gender, age, level of education and others. More specifically, Morocco, like any other country, has its own traditions and culture, future research should explore how these aspects influence the success of learners in an e-learning system.

There is a spurt in online learning worldwide, particularly in Asian and African countries, after the COVID-19 pandemic. Outcomes Based Education (OBE), the new paradigm in Africa, India and elsewhere in the world promotes e-Learning as part of its Lifelong learning attribute. Design of such e-Learning system should incorporate features of autonomous learner’s characteristics (like African higher education students) for their preparedness and progression phases of e-Learning. This is due to the fact that the learning environment and learner characteristics, may differ from place to place and cultures. As per literature, principles of constructivist theory have been successfully adapted for e-Learning. Meta-cognition is a new addition to the OBE paradigm besides cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains, that plays important role in e-Learning. This paper attempts to construct metrics for meta-cognition using constructivist’s learning parameters, for analyzing three phases of e-Learning. Literatures are limited on meta-cognitive studies of e-Learner characteristics. The novelty of the paper is the adaptation of certain principles of ecological system on meta-cognition with literature support. Inductive research with appropriate methodology is applied for studying the effectiveness of e-Learning. Ecological factors in the meta-cognition aspects of the constructivist’s theory have been considered. Two parts are treated by the paper: i. Comparative study between Indian and African scenario; ii. Detailed study of selective African countries on the preparedness and progression phases of e-Learning. Survey methods have been chosen for obtaining feedbacks on scientifically designed questionnaire. Three hypotheses on the meta-cognitive aspects of self-regulation and a null hypothesis for the comparative study, have been constructed. Observations on the three phases of e-Learning have been documented and inferences drawn. Conclusions made out our research study along with the results presented will be of immense use to e-Learning system designers, particularly for the African scenario.

In 2020, the global pandemic of COVID-19 significantly affected most human activities, including education. Many countries took anti-epidemic measures to reduce or eliminate the pandemic, which often included reduction or cancellation of full-time face-to-face school education. This, of course, went hand in hand with a number of technical, organizational, and pedagogical-didactic issues that had to be solved instantly. The presented study analyzes the behavior of more than 1000 secondary school teachers in the e-learning system named Techambition for mathematics education developed by the company with the same name. In the study, data from the spring and autumn 2020 waves of the pandemic are analyzed and presented (the period from 1 March 2020 until 18 March 2021). The main outcome of the study is a description of the basic types of approaches to teaching, based on cluster analysis of the collected data. The collected data show three basic types of teachers’ behavior during spring 2020 that were identified based on their characteristics: organized, hardworking, and seekers and three basic types of teachers’ behavior during autumn 2020: organized, seekers, and experimenters. As part of the findings, we present an interpretation of the data through the description of individual groups and monitor the changes in teachers’ behavior between the spring and the autumn 2020 period of the pandemic.

PurposeInterest is currently growing in open social learner modeling (OSLM), which means making peer models and a learner's own model visible to encourage users in e-learning. The purpose of this study is to examine students' views about the OSLM in an e-learning system.Design/methodology/approachThis case study was conducted with 40 undergraduate students enrolled in advanced programming and database management system courses. A Likert-type questionnaire and open-ended questions were used to obtain the students' views. System usage data were also analyzed to ensure the richness and diversity of the overall data set.FindingsThe quantitative data of the students' views were analyzed with descriptive statistics; the results are presented as graphics. The qualitative data of the students' views were examined by content analysis to derive themes. These themes are organized into four subtopics: the students' positive views, their negative views, their improvement suggestions and their preferences about using similar OSLM visualizations in other e-learning systems. The students' subjective views are discussed in the context of their recorded interactions with the system.Research limitations/implicationsCompetition due to seeing peer models was considered by participants both as positive and negative features of the learning system. So, this study revealed that, the ways to combine peer learner models to e-learning systems that promote positive competition without resulting social pressure, still need to be explored.Practical implicationsBy combining open learner models with open peer models, OSLM enhances the learning process in three different ways: it supports self-regulation, encourages competition and empowers self-evaluation. To take advantage of these positive contributions, practitioners should consider enhancing e-learning systems with both own learner and peer model features.Originality/valueDespite increasing interest in OSLM studies, several limitations and problems must be addressed such as sparsity of data and lack of study of different contexts and cultures. To date, no published study in this area exists in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap by examining OSLM features in an e-learning system from the perspectives of Turkish students by using both their system interaction data and their subjective views.
