The share of private and NGO schools in primary education has substantially increased over time, though the public sector is still a major player in this area. The present study analyses the factors determining the quality of education offered by the three types of schools and draws policy recommendations for improving primary education in Pakistan. The study compares learning achievement of Class 4 students enrolled in 50 public, private, and NGO schools located across six districts of Pakistan and in Azad Kashmir in terms of their scores in Mathematics, Urdu, and General Knowledge tests. The analysis shows that, practically, there is no gap between public and NGO schools in terms of the test scores of their students. However, a significant test score gap was found between the students enrolled in public and private schools. This gap was largely explained by family background and school-related variables, including teachers’ qualification and student/teacher ratio. However, the performance of private schools was not uniform across districts. In some districts public schools performed even better than private and NGO schools. The findings of this study highlight the need for improving the quality of education in public schools by recruiting more qualified teachers and improving overall supervision. Teacher training is the area where the public and private sectors can benefit by pooling their resources and expertise.

This study examines the experiences of female teachers working in private schools in Islamabad, Pakistan. These schools were divided into two categories: elite schools and non- elite schools. This differentiation was made based on fee structure, location of schools and salaries offered to teachers. Thirty-six in-depth interviews were conducted, including 24 interviews from teachers and 12 from school principals. Additionally, the responses of 96 teachers were taken through a survey in the selected schools. The data reveals that female teachers in both elite and non-elite schools encountered numerous constraints. The major issues highlighted by the teachers included low wages, lack of support from administration, disrespectful behaviour from students and job dissatisfaction. The majority considered teaching as a temporary arrangement while they waited for better employment opportunities in other sectors. This study recommends that to rescue the profession of teaching, the state can play a role by safeguarding the rights of teachers. The focus should not be merely on privatization of the education sector but due accountability of private schools is needed not only in terms of quality of education provided, but also workplace ethics and resources provided to teachers.

Background:This article describes policies, practices, and facilities that form the physical activity climate in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota metro area middle and high schools and examines how the physical activity climate varies by school characteristics, including public/private, school location and grade level. Methods:Surveys examining school physical activity practices, policies and environment were administered to principals and physical education department heads from 115 middle and high schools participating in the Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer-Identifying Determinants of Eating and Activity (TREC-IDEA) study. Results:While some supportive practices were highly prevalent in the schools studied (such as prohibiting substitution of other classes for physical education); other practices were less common (such as providing opportunity for intramural (noncompetitive) sports). Public schools vs. private schools and schools with a larger school enrollment were more likely to have a school climate supportive of physical activity. Conclusions:Although schools reported elements of positive physical activity climates, discrepancies exist by school characteristics. Of note, public schools were more than twice as likely as private schools to have supportive physical activity environments. Establishing more consistent physical activity expectations and funding at the state and national level is necessary to increase regular school physical activity.

The text focuses on national policies for Distance Higher Education (DHE) and aims to analyze the trajectory of policies under this modality and to reflect on the challenges that its growth poses for ensuring the quality of education. It is a documentary and bibliographic research, supported by a careful search of the legislation that rules and organizes the offer of distance higher education in Brazil, complemented by a careful review of the literature from authors who discuss the subject. The DHE regulation at the national level was consolidated with the approval of Federal Law No. 9.394 of December 20, 1996, Ley de Directrices y Bases de la Educación Nacional –LDBEN- (law on guidelines and bases of national education), giving way to a period of incentive for the implementation of this modality. In 2017, Federal Decree No. 9.057 of 25 May, supplemented by Portaria Regulation No. 11 of 20 June 2017, significantly altered the legislation and standardization of the Brazilian DHE with a strong favoring towards the accelerated expansion of distance higher education. Brazil has considerable challenges to be faced with regard to DHE, among which the quality of the education offer stands out, including service provision, access and permanence of students in higher education, the use of digital technologies and the expansion of this modality.

The Programme International for Student Assessment (PISA) has become a tool in determining the quality of education in a certain country. Unfortunately, Indonesian students still have difficulties in solving PISA problems. In an effort to improve students' ability in Indonesia to solve PISA questions, we need to analyze their difficulties in solving contextual problems. In this study, we have developed PISA-like problems by taking into account the contextual environment of students and current Indonesian curriculum. Forty-eight PISA-like math problems in Bahasa Indonesia have been developed consisting of sixteen questions level one, sixteen questions level two, and sixteen questions level three. Then, those PISA-like math problems were used to assess the students’ ability (case study in SMPN 8 Banda Aceh, Indonesia). Our study revealed that the ability of students is very low in understanding the information given in the problems. The students’ ability in the mathematical process and decoding are also quite low. Students should practice the PISA-like problems in the teaching-learning process in order to improve their abilities in PISA.
