In this article, we discuss the roles users play in political conversations on Twitter. Our case study is based on data collected in three dates during the former Brazilian president Lula’s corruption trial. We used a combination of social network analysis metrics and social capital to identify the users’ roles during polarized discussions that took place in each of the dates analyzed. Our research identified four roles, each associated with different aspects of social capital and social network metrics: activists, news clippers, opinion leaders, and information influencers. These roles are particularly useful to understand how users’ actions on political conversations may influence the structure of information flows.

SOCIAL CAPITAL AND SOLIDARITY TOURISM: THE DISCOHESION OF COHESION IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT POLICY FOR SERRO Abstract: For the creators of the Programa Turismo Solidário – PTS (Solidarity Tourism Program), cooperation is the master key of sustainable development. It results from a kind of social capital that consists of bonds of mutual trust among the actors involved in the collective action. Therefore, the complete fulfillment of the program's objectives demanded a sufficient supply of social capital circulating through the social networks of the localities in the Serro area included in the PTS. This paper aims to analyze the connections between the relational perspective of social capital and the problem of collective action in this sociospatial context in Minas Gerais. Resorting to the theoretical and methodological framework of Social Network Resorting to the theoretical and methodological framework of Social Network Analysis in order to clarify these connections allowed us to see that the formulation of PTS and how it was implemented in São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras, Milho Verde e Capivari contributed to the lack of cohesion in the tourism social networks and, as a result, the failure of PTS. Keywords: Social Capital. Collective Action. Solidarity Tourism. Sustainable Development. Social Network Analysis. Turismo solidario. Desarrollo sostenible. Análisis de redes sociales

Food waste (FW) is always considered as one of the main challenges for the planet Earth in terms of ethical and social impacts as well as economic and environmental ones. In September 2015, the UN launched the Agenda for 2030 for sustainable development, establishing the 50% reduction in FW at the retail and consumer levels by 2030, as well as food loss along food supply chains. However, there are some concerns about the possibility of concretely reaching this target. One is surely due to the fact that more targeted strategies are more oriented towards logistic/marketing functions than social ones, losing the importance deriving from the reconfiguration of social networks in food redistribution. In this context, the aim of this paper is to improve understanding about how social innovation models can enhance FW reduction, building new relations inside the stakeholders network, and involving new actors usually not actively participating. To do this, the authors present a case study of an Italian non-profit project, named Avanzi Popolo 2.0, adopting this type of approach. The results highlight the importance of building the sense of community and of creating social capital in local food redistribution networks for tackling the issue of FW reduction.

Different views exist regarding the relationship between international aid donors and recipient organisations. International donors are either seen as essential actors for democratising societies or as external interventions that further advance the interests of certain groups. Using Serbia as a case study, this paper argues that by analysing the structure of donor-recipient relationships, a more nuanced understanding emerges based on an analysis of the formal and informal mechanisms that link donors and actors. To reach this understanding, an initial case study of a donor organisation, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), is conducted. By undertaking a network analysis of donorrecipient relationships on UNHCR funded programmes, the agenda setting power of donor organisations is demonstrated. This initial analysis demonstrates how financial capital first links these groups. Over time, financial capital crystallises into social capital that sustains non-governmental organisation (NGO) ?cliques?. Advancing this initial analysis, a second stage of network analysis demonstrates how NGO cliques interact with an organisation capable of influencing government social inclusion and poverty reduction policy. In reflecting on these actor networks, it is demonstrated how social capital constituted through both formal and informal linkage, remains crucial for the UNHCR to implement its objectives, for NGOs to ensure their continued relevance and for government actors to obtain policy advice.

This paper addresses the fields of social and service design in development contexts, practice-based and constructive design research. A framework for social design for services will be explored through the survey of existing literature, specifically by drawing on eight doctoral theses that were produced by the World Design research group. The work of World Design researcher-designers was guided by a strong ethos of social and service design for development in marginalised communities. The paper also draws on a case study in Namibia and South Africa titled ‘My Dream World’. This case study presents a good example of how the social design for services framework functions in practice during experimentation and research in the field. The social design for services framework transfers the World Design group’s research results into practical action, providing a tool for the facilitation of design and research processes for sustainable development in marginal contexts.
