 Objective: The objective of the present work is to study the in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of medicinal plants. The extent and correlation between anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity have been studied.Method: Methanolic and aqueous extracts of five medicinal plants, namely, Ficus racemosa, Aloe vera, Cannabis sativa, Datura stramonium, and Calotropis gigantean have been taken for in vitro anti-inflammatory and total antioxidant activity.Result: The study showed that the inhibition of protein (albumin) denaturation was maximum in aqueous extract of A. vera with 97.55±1.45%. Proteinase inhibitory action of different plant extracts showed significant action and was found to be maximum in aqueous extract of D. stramonium with 87.89±2.58%. Heat-induced hemolysis showed that maximum inhibition was with aqueous extract of F. racemosa with 90.72±3.33%. When hypotonicity-induced hemolysis activity was done it was found maximum in methanolic extract of C. gigantea with 90.58±3.04%. Anti-lipoxygenase activity was found maximum in methanolic extract of F. racemosa with 94.05±4.24%. When total antioxidant activity was done, it was found highest in F. racemosa (4.38±0.546 mM equivalent of ascorbic acid/g tissue).Conclusion: An overall strong positive correlation between anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity was observed, indicating that antioxidant activity of the plant species studied might be responsible for their anti-inflammatory property. Further work needs to be undertaken to fully elucidate the antioxidants responsible for anti-inflammatory action and to develop better herbal drug formulations.

Aims: To determine the phytochemical composition and evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of methanolic and aqueous extracts from Ampelocissus africana (Lour) Merr rhizomes. Study Design: Phytochemical content and screening, in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory assays. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Traditional Pharmacopoeia and Pharmacy (MEPHATRA / PH) of the Institute for Research in Health Sciences (IRSS) and Laboratory of Applied Biochemistry and Chemistry (LABIOCA), University Joseph KI-ZERBO in Ouagadougou between April and August 2020. Methodology: The antioxidant activity of both extracts of the plant was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS+ radical cation decolorization, ferric ion reduction and lipid peroxidation inhibition in rat liver assays. The anti-inflammatory activities in vitro were measured on the ability of the extract to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as 15-lipoxygenase, phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2). Results: This study revealed that the total phenolic contents of the extracts varied from 471.79 ± 1.71 mg GAE/g to 173.88 ± 1.71 mg GAE/g for methanolic and aqueous extract respectively. The extracts were also rich in flavonoids and tannins. The methanolic extract possessed better antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 2.32 ± 0.18 µg/ml for the ABTS, 1.71 ± 0.05 µg/mL for the DPPH, a reducing power agent of 87.44 ± 0.5 mmol AAE /100 g and a percentage inhibition of lipid peroxidation of 52.21%. The methanolic and aqueous extract of A. africana has an inhibitory action on activity of lipoxygenase with IC50 values of 26.09 ± 1.83 μg/mL to 34.32 ± 1.60 μg/mL, respectively. The methanolic extract caused COX-1 inhibition of 36.07%, COX-2 inhibition of 38.31% and PLA2 inhibition of 26.9%. Conclusion: These results showed that the methanolic and aqueous extract from the rhizomes of Ampelocissus africana possessed antioxidant power, inhibitor effect against proinflammatory enzymes.

<p>In the present work methanolic and water extracts of 19 medicinal plants, commonly used in Sudanese folk medicines against gastrointestinal tract, infectious diseases were investigated for their antioxidant activity. Antioxidant assays were carried out by using different in vitro models such as DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging and Iron chelating activity. Methanolic and water extracts of <em>Punica granatum </em>showed the highest total antioxidant activity of 71±0.03 and 73±0.01 respectively. The antioxidant activities of water extracts were poor when compared to the methanol extract. The iron chelating power of methanol and aqueous extracts of <em>Commiphora myrrha</em> 58±0.01 and <em>Azadirachta indica</em> 57±0.20 respectively.</p>

Rosmarinus eriocalyx Jord. & Fourr is a well-known aromatic and medicinal plant whose consumption serves to remedy a number of disorders, evergreen bush endemic to Algeria. The present study aimed it investigating the in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial for two extracts of Rosmarinus eriocalyx. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and the reducing power essay, anti-inflammatory activity with the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. However, the antimicrobial activity was tested with three bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633. The results show an excellent antioxidant and an interesting inflammatory activities but a weak power against the used strains therefore. © 2020 International Formulae Group. All rights reserved. Background: The use of medicinal plants for maintaining good health is getting attention worldwide. Antioxidants play an important role to protect damage caused by oxidative stress. In the present study methanolic extracts of Cassia fistula  was determined using DPPH for its antioxidant activity. Phytochemical investigation confirmed the presence of bioactive ingredients in the extract.Methods: The antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Cassia fistula was evaluated using DPPH free radical assay. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyine) free radical analysis is one of the accurate and frequently employed method for evaluating antioxidant activity.Results: The methanolic extracts showed increase in radical scavenging activity as concentration increases. The IC50 values were calculated for the methanolic extract. Ascorbic acid was used as control. Cassia fistula exhibited IC 50 of 79.42µg/ml.Conclusions: Scientific evidence suggests that antioxidants reduce the risk for chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease and infectious diseases. Further evaluation of pharmacological activities of Cassia fistula may prove useful in treatment of cancer and heart diseases.

Recent study has demonstrated the gastroprotective activity of crude methanolic extract ofM. malabathricumleaves. The present study evaluated the gastroprotective potential of semipurified extracts (partitions): petroleum ether, ethyl acetate (EAMM), and aqueous obtained from the methanolic extract followed by the elucidation of the gastroprotective mechanisms of the most effective partition. Using the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer assay, all partitions exerted significant gastroprotection, with EAMM being the most effective partition. EAMM significantly (i) reduced the volume and acidity (free and total) while increasing the pH of gastric juice and enhanced the gastric wall mucus secretion when assessed using the pylorus ligation assay, (ii) increased the enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant activity of the stomach tissue, (iii) lost its gastroprotective activity following pretreatment with N-omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; NO blocker) or carbenoxolone (CBXN; NP-SH blocker), (iv) exerted antioxidant activity against various in vitro oxidation assays, and (v) showed moderate in vitro anti-inflammatory activity via the LOX-modulated pathway. In conclusion, EAMM exerts a remarkable NO/NP-SH-dependent gastroprotective effect that is attributed to its antisecretory and antioxidant activities, ability to stimulate the gastric mucus production and endogenous antioxidant system, and synergistic action of several gastroprotective-induced flavonoids.

Few studies had been conducted on the phytochemical profile and the biological activities of Brachychiton rupestris. The antioxidant activity of 85% methanolic extract of B. rupestris leaves and its derived fractions was assessed using five different in-vitro assays which are DPPH• assay, phosphomolybdenum assay (TAC), hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging assay, nitric oxide radical (NO•) scavenging assay and permanganate reducing antioxidant capacity (PRAC). The total phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol contents were also determined for the different plant samples using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride and aluminum chloride/ sodium acetate methods, respectively. In-vitro cytotoxic activity of the crude extract and its fractions against HepG2 cell line was also evaluated via SRB assay. The ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the aqueous methanolic extract of the plant leaves possessed the most potent antioxidant potential according to the different applied assays (DPPH• SC50 = 25.50±0.76 µg/mL, TAC= 311.98±1.19 mg AAE/g ext., •OH SA= 68.42±0.15%, NO• SA= 33.68±1.98% & PRAC = 62.88±0.27%). It also owed the highest amount of phenolics (TPC= 342.10±2.08 mg GAE/ g ext.) whose majority were flavonoids (TFC= 309.82±3.64 mg QE/ g ext.). A strong positive correlation was found between the total phenolic contents of various plant samples and their antioxidant activity. The butanol derived fraction exhibited the most potent cytotoxic activity (IC50 = 8.60 µg/mL). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first study reporting the antioxidant and the cytotoxic activities of B. rupestris leaves. The study revealed that the B. rupestris leaves could be a good source of natural antioxidants which may be applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. They could also be a new opportunity of discovering anti-mutagenic agents.

Phytotherapy has known a great evolution all the world and some medicinal plants are important remedies of some diseases. Ammoides atlantica is one of the medicinal plants used in folk medicine. This study aims to estimate the total phenolics and flavonoids contents then to investigate both in vitro antioxidant activity models of aqueous extract (AqE) from Ammoides atlantica. Total polyphenol contents were determined using Folin Ciocalteu's reagent; flavonoids were quantified employing the AlCl3 Method. The in vitro antioxidant property was assessed by DPPH-scavenging radicals and lipid peroxidation assays. The results revealed that Ammoides atlantica aqueous extract presented a high total phenolic and flavonoid contents with values of 85.56±4.71 µg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/mg and 40.55±4.09 µg QE (quercitin equivalent)/mg dry extract, respectively. This extract shows a good DPPH radical scavenging and β-carotene bleaching activities with an IC50 of 107.48±5.9 µg/mL and 130.17±5.52 µg/mL, respectively. This study indicates that the aqueous extract from Ammoides atlantica has potent antioxidant effects and may prove to be of latent health benefit as well as supplementary sources for natural antioxidants drugs.
